Amigos de Nicaragua Presents “Las Sandinistas” Film Screening to Benefit Nicaraguans in Crisis

Amigos de Nicaragua Azul y Blanco (ANAB), in ongoing efforts to raise awareness of the human rights crisis in Nicaragua, is presenting “Las Sandinistas” a film screening benefit on September 27, 2019 at 6:30 pm at Portobanco Restaurant in Los Angeles.

“I believe it’s important to give a voice to a community that has been stripped of their human rights,” says Shakira Barrera, actor, community leader and ANAB board member.  “My mother went through a similar repression in Nicaragua, so I understand how important it is to advocate for today’s victims. We want to encourage others to become a part of this much needed humanitarian work we are doing. “

ANAB is partnering with the film’s director, Jenny Murray, to showcase this feature documentary that offers viewers a timeline of Nicaragua’s sociopolitical history from 1972 to present day. The 2018 documentary brings to light a history that today is repeating in many ways. ANAB wants to bring awareness to the core lessons of the past and present which is the protection of essential human rights, freedoms, and democracy. This film was released in November 2018, after nearly six months of deep turmoil that today continues to threaten Nicaraguans.

Event proceeds will go toward helping thousands of Nicaraguans whose living conditions, employment and education opportunities have been hindered or lost due to the crisis. There is urgent need for funds to provide shelter and food for families both in Nicaragua and countries of refuge, as well as medical and legal aid for refugees located in Central America and the United States.

Tickets to the event at Portobanco’s Restaurant, 1225 Venice Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90006, are $50 and will include the film screening, Nicaraguan cuisine, silent auction and musical entertainment. There will be a credit/cash bar serving beer and wine.  For more information and tickets: 626-795-5769 or visit: https://www.nicaazulyblanco.org/events/. Dress code is business casual and valet parking are available.
