Apple TV+ is extending its stay at the Las Colinas resort with a season two renewal of Acapulco, a comedy series shot in Mexico.

The Spanish and English-language series, with a current 100% rating on the review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes, stars executive producer Eugenio Derbez, who recently took home a SAG Award as part of the celebrated ensemble of Apple Original Film CODA.

Though set in the 1980s port of Acapulco, the series is actually filmed in the also world-famous beach resort of Puerto Vallarta. Production of season two is slated to start this spring.

Acapulco tells the story of twenty-something Máximo Gallardo (Enrique Arrizon), whose dream comes true when he gets the job of a lifetime as a cabana boy at the hottest resort in Acapulco. Season two picks up right on the heels of season one. In 1985, Máximo must contend with upheaval at the resort, unexpected problems at home, and a new love interest who just might rival the girl of his dreams. In the present day, older Máximo (Derbez, who also narrates the series) arrives in Acapulco, where he encounters various people from his past — for better and worse.

In addition to Derbez and Arrizon, the ensemble cast includes Fernando Carsa, Damián Alcázar, Camila Perez, Chord Overstreet, Vanessa Bauche, Regina Reynoso, Raphael Alejandro, Jessica Collins, Rafael Cebrián, Regina Orozco and Carlos Corona.

Hailing from Lionsgate Television, Acapulco is inspired by 3Pas Studios and Pantelion Films’ 2017 box office hit How to Be A Latin Lover–which starred Derbez himself along with Salma Hayek–and is produced by Lionsgate Television and The Tannenbaum Company along with 3Pas Studios. The series is created by Austin Winsberg, Eduardo Cisneros and Jason Shuman. Chris Harris serves as showrunner. Winsberg, Cisneros, Shuman and Harris also serve as executive producers on the project. Jay Karas serves as an executive producer and director. Joining Derbez as executive producers are Ben Odell and co-producer Sonia Gambaro on behalf of 3Pas Studios. Also, Eric and Kim Tannenbaum executive produce along with Jason Wang on behalf of The Tannenbaum Company.

Considered the Latino response to the American Music Awards, the Latin AMAs are produced by MBS Special Events and the Spanish-language network Telemundo, which will broadcast the award ceremony on April 21. Winners of 26 categories are determined by a poll of the public and fans.

Bad Bunny and Cortez face each other off in three categories including the coveted Artist of the Year, as well as Favorite Male Artist and Favorite Urban Artist. 

El Conejo also vies for the honor in two other top categories, including Album of the Year for El Último Tour del Mundo. Additionally, he is a candidate for Favorite Urban Album, Favorite Tropical Album, Favorite Tropical Song and Collaboration of the Year.

For his part, Cortez competes in other categories propelled by his collaboration songs with various artists. The hit “Dákiti,” a duet by Bad Bunny and Cortez, earned the artists another two nominations, in the top category Song of the Year and also in Favorite Urban Song. Also, “Fiel,” another collab with Los Legendarios and Wisin earned Cortez noms for Viral Song of the Year and Favorite Urban Song. 

El Conejo Malo and Cortez are closely followed by three artists also with multiple nods, Colombian artists J Balvin and Karol G and Puerto Rican artist Rauw Alejandro, with seven nominations each.

J Balvin is up for awards in the categories of Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and Favorite Urban Song for “In Da Getto,” Viral Song of the Year for “AM” and Favorite Video for “Lo Que Dios Quiera,” among others. Karol G’s nominations include Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Favorite Urban Album for KG0516, as well as Collaboration of the Year for “El Makinon” and Favorite Female Artist. Rauw Alejandro is competing in the categories of Artist of the Year, Song of the Year with “Todo de Ti,” and Album of the Year and Favorite Urban Album for Vice Versa, among others.

The 2022 Latin AMAs nominees are based on key fan interactions with music, including streaming, sales, airplay, and social activity tracked by Billboard through its data partners MRC Data and Next Big Sound from February 6 of 2021 through Jan. 29 of 2022, according to Telemundo.

The TV network said the nominees for Favorite Video and Favorite Social Artist were selected by a committee of industry professionals which consider the quality, content, creativity, and fan engagement of the music video for Favorite Video, and fan engagement and associated metrics on artist’s social media platforms for Favorite Social Artist. As with all Latin AMA categories, the winners for Favorite Video and Favorite Social Artist are determined by fan voting.

In addition to Telemundo, the Latin AMAs will stream live on the Peacock and broadcast simultaneously on Spanish entertainment cable network Universo. In the rest of the Americas, the show will be broadcast by Telemundo Internacional.

Aubrey Plaza’s next film Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, will premiere March 18.  

The funny actress of Puerto Rican descent stars opposite action star Jason Statham (Crank) in the humorous spy flick. 

The film is about MI6 agent Orson Fortune (Statham) recruited by a global intelligence alliance to track down and stop the sale of deadly weapons technology that threatens the world order. Against his wishes, the agent is paired with CIA high-tech expert Sarah Fidel (Plaza) to go on a globe-trotting mission. Fortune will have to use his charm, ingenuity, and stealthiness to infiltrate billionaire arms dealer Greg Simmonds.

The cast includes Josh Hartnett (Lucky Number Slevin), Hugh Grant (Love Actually), Cary Elwes (Saw) and Bugzy Malone (The Gentlemen). 

Plaza is best known for her role in the TV series Parks and Recreation, which won a Peabody Award in 2011. 

Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre is directed by Guy Ritchie (The Gentlemen), who also exec produces with a screenplay by Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies. Both writers previously worked with the director in the international blockbuster The Gentlemen.

Oscar-winner Bardem recently joined a protest in front of the Russian Embassy in Madrid soon after Russian President Vladimir Putin authorized the invasion of Ukraine.

“I am here to demonstrate my condemnation of the Russian Federation’s warlike actions against Ukraine,” he told the news agency Reuters at the demonstration where about a hundred people, many bearing Ukraine’s blue and yellow flag, had gathered. A video showed the 52-year-old actor wearing a black mask and hoodie and chatting with people at the rally. 

“It is an invasion… It violates Ukraine’s fundamental right to territorial sovereignty, international law, and many other things,” told Bardem to a reporter, adding he was concerned about a possible refugee wave of Ukrainian fleeing war and looking for safety abroad. A week later, the actor’s worries proved prescient. Media reports say that more than 840,000 Ukrainians, including many women and children, have crossed into Poland and other neighboring countries. An order from the Ukrainian government prohibits men 18 to 60 years of age from leaving the country in order to help fight the Russian invasion.

Bardem is among Spain’s most famous artists. He has been nominated four times for the Oscars, winning for best supporting actor in 2008 for his role in No Country for Old Men. This year he competes in the best actor category for his portrayal of  Cuban bandleader Desi Arnaz in the biopic Being the Ricardos. 

The Spanish star has also advocated for other causes like climate justice and the protection of Palestinian civilians in the Israeli-Occupied Territories during armed conflicts.

Shakira is another artist expressing concerns about Russia’s war against Ukraine, especially its impact on the most vulnerable. A few days ago, she retweeted a UNICEF post saying, “The children of Ukraine need peace, NOW.” The Grammy winner has also supported other causes, like children’s education through her own nonprofit, Fundación Pies Descalzos. On Feb. 15, she celebrated International Childhood Cancer Day by posting a video of children completing their chemotherapy. 

Chef Jose Andres, who has ventured into filmmaking as an executive producer of several documentaries, tweeted a video informing that his nonprofit World Central Kitchen was ready to serve food to Ukrainians leaving their homeland, which is under attack by the Russian military. Tweeting from Poland, he asked for donations to help feed the new refugees. He said, “People of the World…Like you, I am distraught watching Ukraine under attack. We must come together as a force for good! @WCKitchen is on Poland border delivering meals tonight—Romania soon. In addition to your donations…I am committing support from the Bezos award to Ukraine.”

Last year, Andrés received a $100 million grant from Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos for the Spanish chef’s humanitarian work.

A new adult-friendly animated series has arrived on Netflix that stands out for mixing a variety of animation styles and paying tribute to 1990s cartoons. The Guardians of Justice is directed by two Spaniards, brothers Luis and Enol Junquera.

The show landed quietly on the streamer with the story of a group of superheroes trying to prevent nuclear war when an unfathomable tragedy alters the power balance in the world. The show was screened at the Cannes International Series Festival in France last year. 

In the first season, an alien superhero, Marvelous Man, helped to end WWIII in a single day and kept peace on Earth for four decades. But an unforeseeable tragedy plunges the globe into chaos, making the future uncertain. It’s up to two Guardians, Marvelous Man’s bitter, violent lieutenant Knight Hawk and idealistic do-gooder Speed, to stop atomic Armageddon.  

The show is rated TV-MA for mature audiences and may not be suitable for ages 17 and under due to language, violence and other adult situations.

Starring in the show are Denise Richards (Love Actually), Derek Mears (Swamp Thing), Hal Ozsan (What Would Diplo Do?), Andy Milonakis (Waiting…), Sharni Vinson (You’re Next) and former pro-wrestler Dallas Page (The Devil’s Rejects).

The Guardians of Justice was created and executive produced by Adi Shankar, an Indian-American executive producer of films led by Hollywood stars like The Grey with Liam Neeson, Killing Them Softly with Brad Pitt, Dredd with Karl Urban and Lone Survivor with Mark Whalberg. Among Shankar’s most recent executive-produced projects is Castlevania, another Netflix animated series that ran from 2017 through 2021 and starred Richard Armitage, James Callis and Alejandra Reynoso. 

The Guardians of Justice marks Shankar’s TV directorial debut.

The Junquera brothers, who serve also as animators, joined Shankar for the Netflix series about six years ago working from Asturias, according to Enol Junquera. The siblings got on board the project through their studio company Angry Metal. “For the first Guardians of Justice scene we made, Adi Shankar asked us to develop a romantic date between superheroes and we came to the most special dating (sic) for Awesome Man and Speed as possible, fighting an evil Ciber-Care Bear,” state the Junqueras on their company website.

The Spanish filmmakers say Angry Metal is an “innovative, award-winning, auteur-driven, hand-drawn (sic) animation studio based in Spain that specializes in adult-oriented animation.” They describe their signature style as a “cross-pollination of our native European sensibilities with Japanese anime, Saturday Morning Cartoons, nostalgic gaming, and American live-action cinema influences.” They add, “ We are allergic to interchangeable assembly-line productions, so each of our works are designed to have a unique artistic identity.” 

The Junqueras and Shankar have collaborated in other animated projects in the past, including the miniseries Judge Dredd: Superfiend and the short film The End of Pokémon, both of which the Spanish brothers directed and wrote.

The Junqueras’ artistic vision contributes to The Guardians of Justices’ unique mix of live action with traditional animation, claymation–a stop-animation technique using clay or plasticine, cut-out paper animation and 8-bit video game footage.

The first season of the Netflix series consists of seven episodes, all of which are now available for streaming.

Reynolds plays a time-traveling pilot who must team up with his younger self and his late father to save the future — and come to terms with his past. Saldana stars as Laura, the missing love of the adult Adam. Walker Scobell plays Adam’s younger version, with Mark Ruffalo and Jennifer Garner playing the boy’s parents.

The film is directed by Shawn Levy, an Oscar-nominated producer of the sci-fi movie Arrival and multiple-Primetime Emmy-nominated producer of the sci-fi popular series Stranger Things.

Casting the film was Carmen Cuba, a filmmaker of Peruvian descent who reportedly lived both in Peru and Bolivia. Cuba has won two Emmys for her casting of the TV series Stranger Things and Behind the Candelabra. She also cast Vida for Starz. Most recently she cast the films, Hillbilly Elegy, The Matrix Resurrections and The Power of the Dog. Past film credits include Boy Erased, The Martian and the Magic Mike franchise.

The Adam Project will debut March 11.

Kate Winslet and Cate Blanchett presented Helen Mirren with the 57th Life Achievement Award. The SAG Awards continued its traditions of presenting a montage saluting the work of SAG-AFTRA members and a filmed “In Memoriam” tribute honoring the union’s members lost during the past year.

DeBose recived the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her role in West Side Story. The honor adds to more than a dozen awards, including a Golden Globe, that the proud Afro-Latina has won for playing Anita in the reimagined version of the musical film by Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg.

“It’s taken a long time for me to feel comfortable calling myself an actor,” said DeBose, before talking about her background in musical theater. “I really do believe that when you recognize one of us, you recognize all of us.” She said her Anita took a decade to make and that she was proud of the character and expressed gratitude to Spielberg for believing in her talent and her colleague actors. In thanking the musical’s cast and crew, she called WSS a “labor of love” and “beautiful cinematic experience.”

DeBose is also an Academy Award nominee for the same role this year.

For their part, Mexican actors Derbez and Fernandez won their awards as part of ensemble casts the former for a film, the latter for a TV series. It is notable that both actors played characters with Spanish surnames that defy Latino stereotypes.

Derbez received his prize for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for his role in the indie film CODA. The feature centers on a young woman who is the only hearing person in her deaf family who is torn between going away to college to study music and staying with her deaf parents. The Mexico City-born actor plays Bernardo Villalobos, the music teacher of the central character. The Derbez shared the honor with Daniel Durant, Emilia Jones, Troy Kotsur, Marlee Matlin and Ferdia Walsh-Peelo.

Fernandez earned his honor for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series for his role in the Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso. The series follows American college football coach Ted Lasso, who heads to London to manage AFC Richmond, a struggling English Premier League soccer team. Guadalajara-born Fernandez plays Dani Rojas, a striker for AFC Richmond. Incidentally, the actor once wanted to be a professional soccer player.

“Ay ay ay ay ay Dios mío, ganamos, we won, thank you to everyone watching and supporting us,” tweeted in Spanglish Fernandez, adding the handles @TedLasso @SAGawards @sagaftra @sagaftraFOUND.

Fernandez shared the prize with Annette Badland, Kola Bokinni, Phil Dunster, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Toheeb Jimoh, Nick Mohammed, Sarah Niles, Jason Sudeikis, Jeremy Swift, Juno Temple and Hannah Waddingham.

This is the second award Fernandez has won for Ted Lasso. Last year the series also won best ensemble at the Pena de Prata Awards in Portugal. His role also earned him an Imagen Award nom in 2021.

Other actors honored with individual awards were Will Smith, Jessica Chastain and Troy Kotsur for performances in motion pictures, and Michael Keaton, Kate Winslet, Lee Jung-Jae, Jung Ho-Yeon, Jean Smart and Ted Lasso’s Sudeikis for performances in television. The award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series went to HBO’s Succession.

The stunt ensemble from the James Bond sequel film No Time to Die was honored for motion picture and the stunt ensemble from South Korea’s Squid Game was honored for television.

Actresses Winslet and Cate Blanchett presented the legendary thespian Helen Mirren with the 57th Life Achievement Award.
