Actor/composer/producer and playwright Lin Manuel Miranda was born in 1980, in New New York to Dr. Luz Towns-Miranda, a clinical psychologist, and Luis A. Miranda Jr., a Democratic Party consultant.

On Broadway – In the Heights
(Photo: In the Heights Prod.)

While attending Wesleyan University Miranda wrote the draft of what would become his first hit Broadway musical, In The Heights. The play, about a Latino neighborhood in New York, premiered on Broadway in 2008 and was nominated for 13 Tony Awards, winning four: Best Musical and Best Original Score and a Best Actor Tony Award for Miranda, and a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.

The world-renowned musical Hamilton about President Alexander Hamilton was Miranda’s next Broadway hit. The idea for the play started with a rap about Hamilton which he wrote and performed for the White House Evening of Poetry, Music and the Spoken Word in 2009.

On the first night of the Hamilton previews (prior to opening), over 700 people were lined up for tickets. The play opened on Broadway in 2015 to rave reviews and sold-out houses.

Hamilton won the Tony Award for Best Musical; Miranda won the Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical and received a nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. Miranda won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the musical, and the Hamilton cast album won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.

While these two groundbreaking musicals launched his career, they do not uniquely define the artistic genius of Miranda. He has had numerous musical collaborations, appeared in TV shows, and was in the film Mary Poppins Returns. In 2021 Miranda makes his directorial debut with the musical drama film tick tock, BOOM based on a musical by Jonathan Larson.

Puerto Rican Llandel Veguilla Malavé AKA Yandel was born on January 14, 197. He is a reggaeton musical artist and producer, also half of the very popular reggaeton duo Wisin & Yandel who emerged in the music scene in 1995.

They quickly rose to fame with the recording of the 2000 album Los Reyes del Nuevo Milenio. They later made the jump to a major label in 2003 with Mi Vida… My Life. De Nuevos a Viejos (2001), Mi Vida… My Life (2003) and De Otra Manera (2004), all of which were certified gold.
In 2013, after their Líderes tour, Winsin and Yandel each went their separate ways. Yandel’s solo studio album after the split, De Líder a Leyenda, was released in November 2013, which was certified Gold (Latin) by the RIAA in 2014.

Michael Pena was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 13,1976 to parents who are originally from Mexico. Pena’s breakout film role was Daniel in the film Crash directed by Paul Haggis. Other notable performances include End of Watch, directed by David Ayer and worked alongside Jake Gyllenhaal.

After high school Pena went to an open casting call for Peter Bogdanovich feature To Sir, with Love II (1996), and beat out hundreds of other young men for a role. He then moved to Los Angeles and booked several small roles in films like Star Maps, My Fellow Americans working along Jack Lemmon and James Garner), and the Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer feature Gone in 60 Seconds (2000).

He appeared in 5 movies nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award – Million Dollar Baby, Crash, Babel, American Hustle, and The Martian – with the first two movies winning.

Peña has said in interviews that in every film he’s cast in, he asks the writers to include a reference to his character being Mexican-American because, he says, he gets to mainly play characters who are not stereotypes & clichés, and that it is a source of pride to Mexican-American fans who go to his films to see him playing non-stereotypical roles

He recently played DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena in Netflix TV series Narcos: Mexico; and Dr. Roarke in Columbia Pictures Fantasy Island.

Pena will next star in the sci-fi epic film Moonfall where he plays Tom Lopez, a wealthy car dealer. The film is to be directed by Roland Emmerich.

Alfonso Arau was born on January 11, 1932, in Mexico City. He is known as both an actor and director for films both in Mexico and the USA. He is most known for the direction of Mexico’s 1992, magic realism film, Like Water for Chocolate based on a book written by his then-wife, novelist Laura Esquivel. The film became the highest-grossing foreign-language film ever released in the United States at the time and was Mexico’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 65th Academy Awards. Like Water for Chocolate received 10 Arieles (the equivalent to the Oscars).

Arau’s first film appearance in his native Mexico was in 1954 as an uncredited dancer. By 1973, he acted in and directed the humorous political critique film Calzónzin Inspector, aimed squarely at the then Mexican ruling party, the PRI.

By the 60’s he was already one of the very first “crossovers” talents working in U.S. big-budget films both as an actor as well as a director. He was cast in Sam Peckinpah’s classic western The Wild Bunch; He starred alongside Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in Romancing the Stone and played “El Guapo” in Three Amigos starring alongside Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short.

In 1995 he directed Keanu Reeves and Anthony Quinn the 20th Century Fox film A Walk in the Clouds, and in 2003 he directed A Painted House, a TV film adapted from John Grisham’s novel.

In December 2004, the Santa Fe Film Festival honored Arau for his work in cinema. He recently did the voice of Papa Julio in Disney’s Coco and has two projects in development.
