Fernanda Romero headlines the new supernatural horror feature The Containment, coming to theaters nationwide via AMC Theatres January 21st. The film marks Romero’s latest leading role and a standout turn that anchors the psychological and emotional core of the story.

Directed by Jack Zagha Kababie and Yossy Zagha, The Containment centers on Romero as Sister Esperanza, a nun whose attempt to help a family during a violent exorcism unleashes a far darker and more dangerous force than anticipated. Romero’s performance blends restraint, intensity, and vulnerability, elevating the film beyond traditional genre tropes and positioning her as the emotional lens through which the horror unfolds.

The film follows a grieving mother and her troubled teenage daughter after the death of the family patriarch, setting off a chain of events that draws the Church into a confrontation with an entity that refuses to be controlled. As the narrative escalates, Romero’s character becomes both a witness and a catalyst, navigating faith, fear, and moral consequence as the situation spirals.

Romero a seasoned actress whose work include The Eye, Drag Me to Hell, and The Burning Plain has worked in both US and Latin markets, featured in over 20 films and television shows, and is also a musician in the band The White Cherries.

The project reinforces her growing presence as a Latina actress carrying complex, commanding roles in U.S. cinema.

The much anticipated film Kiss of the Spider Woman starring Jennifer Lopez, Diego Luna and Tonatiuh will release on October 10, 2025. Four months out, Lionsgate has released the official trailer giving audiences a peek at the powerful performances,

Oscar®-winning director Bill Condon (Dreamgirls, Beauty and the Beast) returns to the musical genre with a dazzling, Technicolor reimagining of Kiss of the Spider Woman—a visually stunning and emotionally resonant adaptation of Manuel Puig’s groundbreaking 1976 novel and the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical by Terrence McNally, John Kander, and Fred Ebb (Cabaret, Chicago).

Set within the confines of a South American prison, the story follows Valentín (Luna), a political dissident, and Molina (Tonatiuh), a flamboyant window dresser jailed for indecency. As the two cellmates form a surprising bond, Molina escapes into vivid retellings of a glamorous Hollywood musical featuring his favorite screen diva, Ingrid Luna (Jennifer Lopez). Through fantasy and shared vulnerability, their connection deepens—blurring the line between illusion and survival.

Written and directed by Condon, the three film stars bring a lot of talent and recognition to the project. Emmy® nominee Luna (Andor, Y Tu Mamá También), rising star Tonatiuh (Carry On, Promised Land), and Lopez, the Emmy®, Grammy®, and Golden Globe-nominated icon (Hustlers, Out of Sight), who also executive produces alongside Luna.

Produced by Barry Josephson, p.g.a., Tom Kirdahy, p.g.a., and Greg Yolen, p.g.a., Kiss of the Spider Woman promises to be a sweeping cinematic experience where fantasy, passion, and resistance collide. Kiss of the Spider-Woman is an Artists Equity and Mohari Media presentation and a Josephson Entertainment, Tom Kirdahy, Greg Yolen and Nuyorican production. Executive producers include Bill Condon, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Mark Scheinberg, Dani Bernfeld, Kevin Halloran, Michael Joe, Mickey Liddell, Pete Shilaimon, Whitney Williams, Jennifer Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Courtney Baxter, Diego Luna, D.
Filmed in Mexico, Zoe Saldaña who plays Rita, an overqualified and exploited lawyer who wastes her talents working for a large firm far better at whitewashing criminal garbage than serving justice.
Following the movie’s Cannes debut, Selena Gomez who plays Manitas wife, Jessi del Monte, opened up about the nerves she was feeling. “I was very nervous because this is a project that is unlike anything I’ve ever done before,” she told The Hollywood Reporter in May. “Even though I have such a small part, it’s such a big and special project that I feel so lucky that I was able to be a part of it.”

Selena also recalled the audition process, where she said she “acted insane.” She told the trade publication, “[Audiard] wanted me to perform one of the numbers and I just surrendered and completely gave myself. I was, like, ‘Well, at least I could walk away and say that I did my best.’ When he asked me to be a part of it, I was so nervous but also so excited.”

The original songs for the film were contributed by mutli–grammy winning group, Camille, while its original score was provided by Clément Ducol. The choreographic sections of the film are designed by Damien Jalet.

By Bel Hernandez Castillo

The Ugly Little Monkeys documentary recounts the story of a cultural phenomena, the first student mariachi group in the US, Los Changuitos Feos de Tucson created in 1964 by an Irish Catholic priest. It is the story of the music they played, the magic they experienced, the pain they endured and the ultimate triumph of their spirit, told in this documentary as they near the group’s 60 anniversary later this year.

The enduring legacy of Los Changuitos Feos began with a group of high school boys whose lives would change forever through the mariachi music they played and the cultural Mexican pride they felt, to become the start of the student Mariachi movement which has since spread across America.

The documentary traces the untold story of almost 60 years of a legacy that would ignite a pride wave as these young kids embraced their Mexican-American culture and learned to love Mariachi music.

Ugly Little Monkeys the documentary, co-directed by David Valdez, a native of Tucson Arizona, and actor/writer and producer Enrique Castillo. It is a heartwarming and triumphant tribute to America’s first youth mariachi group, celebrating resilience and cultural pride with masterful storytelling!

The documentary takes us on a historical journey from delving into where the idea of forming Los Changuitos Feos came from. It was the brainchild Father Charles H. Rourke, who had been an accomplished jazz pianist and had shared the stage with greats like Sarah Vaughn and Duke Ellington before becoming a priest.

As a priest of the Catholic church in the ‘60’s, Father Rourke had a passion for assisting in the positive development of at-risk youth, hosting a radio program dedicated to youth awareness. When he was introduced to Mariachi music he fell in love with it and hit on the idea of using the form to recruit young men to start a youth Mariachi group. His charm was intoxicating and he was welcomed into the Mexican/American homes with a status reserved only for those deserving the highest reverence.

As the David Ruiz, labeled in the documentary as the “Original Changuito Feo” because it was Ruiz Father Rourke reached out to be the first a of the members of the group, recounts in the documentary, the group had to learn to play the instruments, learn the songs in Spanish (which many did not speak), how to play the instruments in some cases, and learn about “stage presence” from Father Rourke. The initial group consisted of 5 guitars, one vihuelas, one trumpet, one violin and one guitarrón.

Throughout the years Los Changuitos Feos achieved national recognition following performances at the inaugurations for Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford and for the play and Mayor Richard J. Daly of Chicago and recorded with Herb Albert. They performed at Universal City with the group eventually rising to international fame performing on the CBS special the Mission and the The Mariachi and represented the US in Mexico.

Prod./Co-Director David Valdez

Co-director and executive producer Valdez, a native of Tucson and very familiar with Los Changuitos Feos (he even tried out for the group as a young boy) was given a copy of a book, Bless Me Father for You Have Sinned written my one of the original member of Los Changuitos Feos, Wilfred Arvizu

Co-Director/Producer Enrique Castillo

When Valdez approached his good friend, actor/writer Enrique Castillo about a possible movie based on the book, they decided that the voice of the original Changuitos had to be heard first and Valdez and Castillo decided to co-direct and co-produce the documentary which is inspired by Arvizu’s book. They began the research and with an outline of the script written by Castillo in 2019.

One of the first and the most important tasks was to reach out to the original living Chanquitos. Over 50 years had passed and they had all taken different paths since leaving the group after high school. Two of them went on to form their own mariachi group, Mariachi Cobre, which has been playing at Disney’s Epcot center for over 40 years. The other members were spread out across America, went on to become a doctor, a state senator, a senior staff engineer who helped launch the Hubble, a Kempo Karate Master, a Hall of Fame recording artist, a Vietnam veteran and many other illustrious careers.

Los Changuitos Feos 1st Reunion 2019 (Photo: Jeff Smith)

Nineteen original members from different generations of Chanquitos agreed to meet up in Tucson for a taped reunion. It was an emotional rollercoaster for all of them, especially having to recount on camera their experiences being a Changiotos Feo, as well as participating in group interviews.

The interviews with the original Chanquitos are the heart of the documentary, supported by archival footage, news clippings, interviews with family members, and civic leaders. Additional interviews of some of the greats in music like native Tucsonan and 11 time Grammy winner Linda Ronstadt and Ruben Fuentes, a revered classical violinist and composer known for his work with Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán his work with Linda Ronstadt‘s Canciones de mi Padre.

While the visibility and popularity of the Changuitos grew, Father Rourke’s immoral conduct began to surface: alcoholism, questioning of his faith, chronic absences at performances and even worse. In spite of the dark experiences the young men were forced to contend with they assumed leadership roles and persevered. Through their love for and dedication to Mariachi music Los Changuitos Feos de Tucson became world-renowned.

“After having met many of the early members of Los Changuitos Feos, it’s easy to see how the group became so successful. They’re dedicated individuals who inspire with their accomplishments even after having left the group”, Castillo recalls. “It has also been a real pleasure seeing them be totally supportive of each other and watching them joyously interacting and cavorting as they did when they were young.”

Another legacy shared by the members of the Changuitos is the spread of Mariachi programs across the U.S. The spread of youth mariachi groups has grown exponentially in U.S. public schools over the past 30 years, from just a handful of programs in a few states to more than 500 today

It has been five and a half years in the making and the filmmakers of the documentary Ugly Little Monkeys has begun the journey of sharing the untold story of how a group of kids found their music and shared it with millions and continue to do so.

The first screening was a benefit screening in the Changuitos hometown of Tucson, Arizona. The filmmakers wanted to honor the legacy of Los Changuitos Feos and all the proceeds went to support the continuation of the work of this groundbreaking group. This past March audiences gathered at the history downtown FOX theater to fill the 1,164 seat to witness, not only a slice of Tucson history in all its splendor, but also the uncomfortable truths they never knew the young boys had to endure.

“The five-and-a-half-year production journey has been quite long, exciting, challenging and gratifying, “ said Valdez, whose knowledge of the story started with his father Joel Valdez, who served as one time as Tucson City Manager and a board member of Los Changuitos Feos. “I’m extremely thankful to all of the original members of Los Changuitos Feos de Tucson, for entrusting Enrique and I with their personal stories and giving us permission to share them on the big screen.”

The goal of the production was always to tell the untold story about a group of mostly Mexican-American youth which garnered international visibility and are a part of American history. They decided to offer fundraising screening to organizations, universities and schools that would benefit youth mariachi groups. The screening fall into the co-directors goal to bring social accountability to the work they do through their Ugly Little Monkeys Production company.

The documentary continues its fundraising screenings in Los Angeles on March 16, 2024 at Plaza de La Raza. Plaza’s commitment to offering classes in music and arts programming since 1970 in East Los Angeles was the perfect choice. Proceeds for the fundraising screening will benefit Plaza’s Student Mariachi Ensemble, who will play at the reception prior to the screening.

“I feel we accomplished our goal by ultimately giving credit back to those who were truly responsible for creating the first youth mariachi in the U.S. and helping start the youth mariachi movement that we’re all witnessing today,” Valdez adds. “I’m extremely proud of my Mexican heritage and having the freedom and opportunity to share our beautiful stories with the world.”

Ugly Little Monkeys is executive producer by Edward James Olmos, Marcia Grand & Justin Krienbrink.

There will be a Q&A after the screening with co-directors Valdez and Castillo. They will be joined by Wilfred Arvizu the author of Bless Me Father for You Have Sinned and a former member of Los Changuitos Feos.

Vote Your favorite film at SpotlightDorado.com/vote until Feb. 11yh

Brands like McDonalds have known for years that U.S. Latinos make up a consumer market too large to ignore. According to the 2023 Latino Donor Collaborative study, U.S. Latinos currently represent the 5th largest economy in the world with a GDP of $3.2 trillion dollars a year, a consumer cohort that are brand loyal. That is one of the reasons McDonald’s USA last year launched the Spotlight Dorado Short Film initiative, a multiyear platform that seeks to showcase and advocate for Latino talent in Hollywood, because representation matters.

In it 2nd annual McDonalds once again dives into the captivating world of the latest Spotlight Dorado lineup, showcasing the talents of emerging Latino and Hispanic filmmakers. Cinephiles across the nation will have until Februaty 11th to cast their vote for their favorite short film to be selected from the latest edition of the three films selected to be part of th this year SpotlightDorado.com

This year’s films include Marissa Díaz‘s adventure-filled Mexican standoff, Fancy Florez’s Summer Staycation, Kryzz Gautier‘s virtual reality romance, Chimera, and Pablo Riesgo‘s satire sci-fi, Cuando Volvimos A La Tierra. Fans can vote for their favorite film until February 11 to help determine the grand prize winner.

The short films are making their debut amid underrepresentation of Latinos in the entertainment and film industry. Recent findings from the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative highlight the issue remains ongoing, both behind the scenes and on-screen. Their latest research study, supported by McDonald’s Spotlight Dorado, reveals that less than 5% of directors from major motion pictures between 2007 and 2022 were Hispanic/Latino. Among this group, only five were women.

Latin Heat had the pleasure of interviewing Marissa Diaz about her entry in this competition, with her short Fancy Florez’s Summer Staycation on their show Hollywood Talks.

This disparity goes beyond directors. On-screen, a mere 4.4% of lead or co-lead roles featured Hispanic/Latino actors. This latest research highlights the urgency for a more inclusive film landscape.

By supporting pivotal research and rising storytellers, McDonald’s is helping drive inclusivity while reaffirming its commitment to the diverse communities it serves.

“As part of our commitment to giving back to the diverse communities we call home, we are proud to support opportunities that help drive inclusivity and change,” said Ryan Worthy, Content and Culture Director at McDonald’s USA. “With Spotlight Dorado, McDonald’s has been able to use its scale to amplify pivotal research and create opportunities for Latino and Hispanic storytellers–and the results speak for themselves. We’re so proud of the outstanding talent showcased by this year’s Spotlight Dorado finalists.

Blue Beetle Will First Have an International Premiere Prior to U.S. release

The Latino community has long awaited a feature film like Blue Beetle. This film will be the first studio film with a Latino superhero in the lead. And that Latino is Xolo Maridueña, who audiences already love in Netflix’s it series Cobra Kai.

It’s a big tall order for Maridueña to carry the hopes of the Latino community on his shoulders. But he has been working all his life for an opportunity to represent and is up to the task. Xolo Maridueña is a native of Los Angeles. He started acting professionally in 2011. His natural talent quickly lead to dozens of roles within his first year. Those included several television commercials, a recurring role on Parenthood which soon turned into a series regular role. His other credits include Showtime’s Twin Peaks, and the TV drama Major Crimes. However, Maridueña is most known as Miguel in the Netflix original series, Cobra Kai, the continuation of the Karate Kid franchise.

Warner Bros. Pictures is also betting on this film and Maridueña. This could be the film that will finally solidify, not only the marketability of a Latino in a Superhero lead role, but also prove the power of the #1 film going audience in the U.S. — Latinos. The film, directed by Angel Manuel Soto, also stars a cast of well known Latino/a talent, an Academy Award nominee and a Oscar winning actress.

Blue Beetle marks the DC Super Hero’s first time on the big screen as well as Maridueña’s first film role. The Blue Beetle superhero first made an appearance in 1939, and is one of the oldest DC characters. Lending in Latino perspective to the Warner Bros. film is Mexican screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, best known for Contrapelo and Miss Bala.

Maridueña plays Jaime Reyes who returns home from college with major plans for his life, but as it usually happens, life has a different plan. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: The Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Blue Beetle.

Soto has brought together a dreamcast to tell the story. From millennials to Academy Award nominated actors, to television superstars, which lends itself for more of a wide audience appeal.

Starring alongside Maridueña are Academy Award nominee Adriana Barraza (Rambo: Last Blood, Thor) as Jaime’s Nana, Damían Alcázar (Narcos, Narcos: Mexico) as his father, Elpidia Carrillo (Mayans M.C., the Predator) as his mother, George Lopez (Lopez Vs. Lopez, Rio and Smurf franchises) as Jaime’s Uncle Rudy, Raoul Max Trujillo (the Sicario films, Mayans M.C.) as Carapax, Bruna Marquezine (Maldivas, God Save the King) as Jenny Kord, with Oscar winner Susan Sarandon (Monarch, Dead Man Walking) as Victoria Kord. The film also stars Gen-z’er Belissa Escobedo (American Horror Stories, Hocus Pocus 2) as Jaime’s sister, Milagro, and millennial Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows) as Dr. Sanchez.

Director Soto hails from Puerto Rico, and is an avid traveler of the world. He first studied architecture and advertising but soon found his love for film. Having directed several short films, his long form films include Charm City Kings which received critical and a Grand Jury Nomination at Sundance, and his 2018 film The Farm took the Raindance Film Festival Immersive Stories Award. Blue Beetle will be his first studio film.
