Born in San Antonio, TX, Nicholas Gonzalez graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in literature from Stanford University and spent two terms at Oxford University, England. Encouraged by a professor to try acting, he moved to Hollywood in 1989 and landed his first acting gig on ABC’s Dharma & Greg that first year.
Two years later Gonzalez landed a series regular in Dennis Leoni’s Resurrection Blvd., and literally has not stopped working since. Whether as a guest star or series regular on shows like Mental, Pretty Little Liars, Being Mary Jane, Jane the Virgin, How To Get Away with Murder, or voicing characters on animated shows like Family Guy, or Bordertown, Gonzalez has always impressed.
“I’ve been fortunate,” said Gonzalez, “that a lot of roles I’ve played have been professionals and not your TV stereotype of Latinos.”
In 2017 Gonzalez landed a major role in ABC’s The Good Doctor, which instantly became a hit. Gonzalez, who played Dr. Neil Melendez has said he patterned his character on his father and brother, both who are doctors in Texas.
However to everyone’s surprise, Dr. Melendez was killed off in the final episode of season three of The Good Doctor. Millions of fans took to social media to voice their dismay and lobby for his return.
But life goes on and soon Gonzalez was on to his next project, one of which is playing Sheriff Jose Gomez in the upcoming film Borrego by director Jesse Harris.
Gonzalez is married to actress Kelsey Crane (The Good Doctor, Casa Vita, Chasing Life). They have one daughter.
