The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and YouTube recently announced a landmark multi-year partnership that will give YouTube exclusive global rights to the Oscars®, beginning with the 101st Academy Awards ceremony in 2029 and running through 2033. Under the agreement, the Oscars will be streamed live and for free worldwide on YouTube, reaching more than 2 billion viewers, with U.S. access also available to YouTube TV subscribers.

In addition to the live ceremony, YouTube will offer expansive Oscars coverage, including red carpet arrivals, behind-the-scenes moments, Governors Ball access, and more. The platform will also enhance accessibility for the Academy’s growing global audience through features such as closed captioning and multilingual audio tracks. Beyond Oscar night, the partnership includes exclusive worldwide access to major Academy events and programs via the Oscars YouTube channel, including the Governors Awards, nominations announcements, Student Academy Awards, Scientific and Technical Awards, filmmaker interviews, podcasts, and film education initiatives.

The collaboration extends into film preservation and education through Google Arts & Culture, which will help digitize and provide global access to select Academy Museum exhibitions and portions of the Academy Collection—the world’s largest film-related archive, comprising more than 52 million items. Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Lynette Howell Taylor called the deal “the future home of the Oscars,” emphasizing its potential to expand global access, celebrate cinema, and inspire new generations of filmmakers. YouTube CEO Neal Mohan echoed that sentiment, describing the Oscars as a vital cultural institution poised to reach and inspire audiences worldwide.

The Academy’s current domestic broadcast partnership with Disney’s ABC will remain in place through the 100th Oscars in 2028, as will its international arrangement with Disney’s Buena Vista International.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has released its list of 397 artists and executives whose talent has distinguished them for their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. Since 2016 when AMPAS announced their commitment to representation, inclusion, and equity, there have been gains. This year 37% of percent of the invitees are from underrepresented ethnic/racial communities.

AMPAS, with its 17 branches of on-camera and behind-the-scenes artists, is the governing body that oversees the selection of the Academy Awards. Membership selection is based on professional qualifications by reviewed by their peer group.

Of this year’s 397 membership invites, thirty-six (36) Latinos have been invited to join the voting branches that decide who will receive the Oscar in their category.

Enrique Castillo (Deja Vu, Blood In Blood Out) who became a member of AMPAS in 2016 knows too well what an honor it is to be asked to join AMPAS. We reached out to him for a quote.

Producer Yvett Merino
(Photo: ABC)

“I congratulate this year’s Latino invitees to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. It’s a fitting recognition of your talent, hard work and perseverance. I look forward to joining you in being a voice and advocate for Latino artists in the entertainment industry and in the ranks of the Motion Picture Academy”.

Sixteen films from Spanish, Portuguese and French-speaking Latin American countries, as well as Spain, are among 93 submissions eligible for consideration in the 2022 Oscar’s International Feature Film category, according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

While some of the entries have not yet had their required qualifying release, the Academy’s list in the international category includes: Argentina’s The Intruder, Bolivia’s The Great Movement, Brazil’s Private Desert, Peru’s Powerful Chief, Chile’s White on White, Colombia’s Memoria, Costa Rica’s Clara Sola, Dominican Republic’s Holy Beasts, Ecuador’s Submersible, Haiti’s Freda, Mexico’s Prayers for the Stolen, Panama’s Plaza Catedral, Spain’s The Good Boss, Uruguay’s The Broken Glass Theory and Venezuela’s The Inner Glow.

Dominican Republic’s and Mexico’s Academy Award submissions

All International Feature Film submissions must fulfill the release requirement and comply with all the category’s other qualifying rules to advance in the voting process of AMPAS, which presents the golden statuette. An international feature film is defined as a feature-length motion picture–more than 40 minutes–produced outside the United States with a predominantly–more than 50 percent–non-English dialogue track.

Academy members from all branches are invited to opt in to participate in the preliminary round of voting and must meet a minimum viewing requirement to be eligible to vote in the category, according to the organization. The shortlist of 15 films will be announced on Tuesday, December 21, 2021.

The 94th Academy Awards ceremony is slated to take place at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre in Hollywood in Los Angeles March 27.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the campaign art for the 93rd Oscars, and a Mexican artist Victoria Villasana stands out among seven artists that contributed to the project.

The 2021 campaign illustrates this year’s tagline “Bring Your Movie Love,” celebrating “our global appreciation for the power of film to foster connection, to educate, and to inspire us to tell our own stories,” says the Academy in a press release.

Campaign art for the 93rd Oscars. Photo: AMPAS

The Academy invited seven international artists to create custom Oscar statuette art inspired by the question “What do movies mean to you?” In addition to Villasana, the other artists are Temi Coker, Petra Eriksson, Magnus Voll Mathiassen, Michelle Robinson, Karan Singh, and Shawna X.

This year’s campaign features an expanded color palette, broadening the artists’ approach to reimagining the iconic statuette. The design ranges across illustration, motion design, painting, photography, and textile art. The inspiration for the design comes from the artists’ love of the 20s and ’30s theater and film.

Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Villasana is a textile artist interested in history, culture, and how people relate to each other through their vulnerabilities in a fragmented and post-digital world. According to her biography, the dynamism in Villasana’s work stems from the way the thread is left uncut, far below the frame, giving a surreal and unfinished aesthetic that reflects on the importance of acceptance of change, imperfection, and the ephemerality of life.

Villasana, who divides her home between Mexico and England, continues to explore her medium through installations, social projects, editorial and commercial work, collaborating with artists, brands, and galleries worldwide.

Her entry is featured on the AMPAS social media (Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook).
