REVIEW

A story ripped from tomorrow’s headlines? Two years ago, the thought of another American Civil War was unthinkable. But today Mr. and Mrs. MAGA America think a new American Civil War is inevitable.

This is the eerily uncomfortable future explored in the HBO Max Mini-Series, DMZ. This futuristic apocalyptic thriller is structured like the classic Escape from New York. DMZ like Escape from New York asks the viewer to take a lovin’ spoonful of suspension of disbelief before crossing the story threshold into this saga of a world gone mad. Fortunately, we have a stellar, well-rounded performance by Rosario Dawson as our guide through the chaos of DMZ.

A future civil war has once again divided the United States into two separate Americas with a DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) in between. Eight years prior, Dawson lost her young son, Christian (Bryan Gael Guzman) during the evacuation to freedom. She returns looking for him. The DMZ is populated by people of color who exist in a world of violence, corruption and warring tribal gangs. Young Christian is now associated with a powerful faction headed by the brutal Parco, played with wicked relish by Benjamin Bratt. Parco is in a political struggle with an odious oily well-dressed murderous businessman, Wilson, (Hoon Lee). Dawson finds herself embroiled in this bloody power struggle for dominance as she battles to reclaim her son.

DMZ is far and away Dawson’s best performance in a demanding dramatic role. As a despondent mother looking for her long-lost son, Dawson hits every emotional note with pitch-perfect clarity As Alma Ortega, Dawson can at once be vulnerable, strong, resolute, humble, fearful and touching. Her performance will likely generate some acting nomination buzz when award season comes around again.

The butterfly as a metaphor. Mendel (Tenoch Huerta), returns to his hometown in the awe-inspiring butterfly forests off Michoacán on the advice of his uncle to come to visit his ailing grandmother.

Mendel has been living and working as a biologist in New York City. Upon his return, he begins to have childhood flashback memories of he and his brother, Simon, (Noé Hernández), wandering through the butterfly forests pondering their beauty and the meaning of their yearly migration which brings them back to this same spot century after century.

Mendel also begins to question his hybrid identity and where he belongs.

Son of Monarchs is a beautifully shot allegorical story that illustrates the spiritual connection between the butterflies and the Mexican people of Michoacán.

Ninety percent of the dialog in Son of Monarchs is in Spanish with English subtitles. Alexis Gambis, the director of Son of Monarchs, won the prestigious Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.

Netflix with the Los Angeles Mayor’s Evolve Entertainment Fund to help college students get their foot in the door in Hollywood.

Darnell Moore, Netfilx Director of Inclusion Strategy had a message for 50 current college students and recent graduates hoping to break through in the entertainment industry, “What I’m here to tell you is it’s possible”.

His remarks were part of a day-long career workshop held at Netflix’s Los Angeles offices earlier this year in partnership with the Los Angeles Mayor’s Evolve Entertainment Fund.

Launched in 2018 by Mayor Eric Garcetti, the Evolve Entertainment Fund’s mission is to build pathways into film, television and music careers for women, people of color and low-income Angelenos through paid internships, mentorships and an ongoing series of panels and workshops, much like the one held at Netflix.

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos sits on the Evolve Entertainment Fund’s Advisory Committee, along with Netflix creators Ava DuVernay (When They See Us), Dan Lin (Avatar The Last Airbender) and Ryan Murphy (The Politician). (All workshop attendees are members of the Evolve Fund.)

The goal of the Netflix workshop was to help prepare these students specifically for interviews for internship opportunities at Hollywood studios, networks and production companies. Rather than focusing on careers at any one company, the event was organized to hopefully help foster a stronger and more diverse ecosystem in Hollywood.

Darnell Moore speaking to college students Photo: Netflix

The day event included mock interviews, resume workshops as well as presentations on elevator pitches and virtual production. Participants were also invited to have new professional headshots taken to use for their online profiles.

“I come from a very low-income community and I’m Latina so it’s very difficult to even enter these spaces,” she said. “It just makes you feel like you’re getting one step closer each time. You take something and learn something from each company.”
Leslie Montoya, Santa Monica College Student

Throughout the day, attendees were able to meet with nearly 30 Netflix employees who volunteered for the event. These staffers came from a wide variety of Netflix departments, ranging from recruitment and research to production and marketing. The event also stretched across multiple organizations within Netflix, including talent acquisition, inclusion & diversity and Netflix’s ION (Inclusion Outreach Networking) group, which is focused on bolstering inclusion and diversity efforts across the entertainment field.

“It was exciting to see our colleagues from different disciplines including our production, post-production, talent acquisition, and inclusion teams come together to make this event happen,” said Annisa Kau, a member of Netflix’s talent team in Los Angeles.

Many in the “teams” were optimistic that, once these students were able to complete internships and entry-level jobs in the entertainment field, they could then return to Netflix as potential employees in the future.

Leslie Montoya, who is studying mass communications and media at Santa Monica College, called the event a “great opportunity” to get her foot in the door.

“I come from a very low-income community and I’m Latina so it’s very difficult to even enter these spaces,” she said. “It just makes you feel like you’re getting one step closer each time. You take something and learn something from each company.”

The post LA Mayor and Netflix Helping Create A More Diverse Entertainment Industry first appeared on .
