A Fresh New Latina Face for an Old Favorite Story

You Can’t Dance the Cumbia in Glass Slippers

Cinderella, starring Cuban-born pop singing sensation, Camilla Cabello, premiered on Amazon Prime Video to enthusiastic reviews and deservedly so. The “old gal” is given a much-needed facelift by writer, director, Kay Cannon (Blockers). This re-telling of Cinderella is infused with a much more modern, urban, hip sensibility of the oft-told fable. And the casting of Cabello in the lead role is the tasty frosting on an already delicious cake.

Cabello, like Cinderella, isn’t in the market for a prince to save her from her dreary existence. No, this Cinderella has dreams, ambitions and a mind of her own. Cannon also delights in poking fun at some of the well-known fairy tale conventions. In one scene Cinderella is being prepared by her Fabulous Godmother for the upcoming consequential royal ball played to hilarious campy effect by Billy Porter (Pose). Cinderella is asked if she is anxious to meet her future prince charming, Nicholas Galitzine (High Strung), at the ball. This Cinderella is a little ambivalent but is more concerned by the prospect of having to wear uncomfortable glass slippers. Any Latina worth her salsa knows you can’t do a decent cumbia in a pair of uncomfortable glass slippers.

The story narrative in Cinderella is frequently told in song and the dance sequences that seem to explode out of nowhere into beautifully costumed jailbreaks are reminiscent of Lin Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights. The exuberant spontaneous staging of the musical numbers is evocative of the best of Bollywood films.

The first-rate costumes, set designs, music score and cinematography make Cinderella a delectable treat of sights and sounds.

She’s Ready for Prime Time

Prior to her starring role in Cinderella, most of Cabello’s work in front of the camera was in her short music videos. These well-produced videos often featured scenes that show Cabello’s natural comic acting talents. Talents well-suited for a TV sitcom. It’s not too much of a stretch to imagine Cabello being the star of her own TV sitcom in the near future.

Cabello’s unquestionable talent as a singer and actor will result in the story of her career having a happy, successful fairy tale ending of her very own.

A Second Look at “Once Upon a Time”

The success of this retooling of Cinderella should cause producers to take a second look at other beloved fairy tales that could be redone with an added tongue-in-cheek Spanglish twist.

Here are a couple of my suggestions of a “second look” at the “once upon a time” movie magic that Hollywood could turn into highly entertaining content. With Mexican-Americans making up 66% of the U.S Latino population, these are sure to be major hits.

Little Red Low-rider Hood

Starring: Bad Bunny, Pitbull

Synopsis: Two rival low-rider car clubs in East San Jose vie for asphalt jungle, boulevard supremacy in their barrio through a show-stopping, car-bopping series of high-octane, joyous, life-affirming musical singing numbers and spontaneously erupting, street-filled, seemingly chaotically choreographed dance sequences.

 Goldilocks and the Three Bros

Starring: Shakira, Los Lonely Boys

A beautiful Mexican girl from Tijuana joins a Boyle Height Chicano boy band. Together they vie for Latino Rockband supremacy in their barrio against other bands through a show-stopping, be-bopping series of high-octane, joyous, life-affirming musical singing numbers and spontaneously erupting, street-filled, seemingly chaotically choreographed dance sequences.

 The Empanadero’s New Clothes

Starring: Enrique Castillo

Synopsis: A humble, Laredo baker, Chano Pintor, purchases a classic, 1940’s-era zoot suit in a vintage clothing store for a Halloween party. When he puts it on he discovers it gives him superhero powers. Chano uses these newfound powers to battle the gang bangers and drug cartels plaguing his barrio through a show-stopping, head-bopping series of high-octane, joyous, life-affirming musical singing numbers and spontaneously erupting, street-filled, seemingly chaotically choreographed dance sequences.

Camila Cabello’s Cinderella Pushed Back

Camila Cabello’s portrayal of Cinderella has been pushed back until July 16. The live-action remake, written and directed by Kay Cannon, is a modern musical version of the classic fairy with a star-studded cast.

The Señorita singer will play the titular character and will be joined by Billy Porter, Indian Menzel, Nicholas Galitzine and Minnie Driver.

The original release date is Feb. 5, but Sony Studios have delayed the release due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Though details about the film have been kept under wraps, it is said that Cabello is going to have an integral part in the music of the film. We’ll have to wait until July to see the Cuban artist serenade us in the long-anticipated fairytale.

Selena Gomez Announces Spanish EP

Selena Gomez’s officially announced her highly anticipated Spanish EP is set to release on March 12. Revelación (Revelation) will explore Gomez’s latinidad as she dives deep into her Mexican roots.

The announcement of Revelación comes shortly after she dropped her single De Una Vez, produced by Tainy, on Jan. 16 and Baila Conmigo on Jan. 29 with rapper Rauw Alejandro. The latter has already amassed over 19 million YouTube views within three days of its release.

“This has been something I’ve wanted to do for 10 years, working on a Spanish project, because I’m so, so proud of my heritage, and just genuinely felt like I wanted this to happen,” Gomez told Apple Music. “And it happened, and I feel like it’s the perfect timing. Just with all the division in the world, there’s something about Latin music that globally just makes people feel things, you know?”

Star Wars fans were thrilled to see Rosario Dawson transform into Ahsoka Tano for The Mandalorian and now fans will get even more of the Rent actress.

Disney announced that Ahsoka will get her own live-action series on Disney Plus. The limited-series will be created and executive produced by The Mandalorian creator and executive producer Dave Filoni (Clone Wars and Rebels).

Official release dates haven’t been announced, but Disney hinted that the next chapter will debut on Christmas 2021 and will connect with another Star Wars series Rangers of the New Republic.

Sony has a date for Kay Cannon‘s re-imagination of Cinderella starring multi-platinum pop star and GRAMMY nominee, Camila Cabello is set to open wide on February 5, 2021.

Cinderella will mark Cabello’s feature acting debut. The 22-year-old singer first entered her journey to fame as being the lead singer for the group Fifth Harmony, and has since pursued a solo career that is destined to superstardom!

Cinderella is a musical comedy, and Cabello’s version is described as “an ambitious young woman whose dreams are bigger than the world will allow.”

Late-night host James Corden inspired the original idea and will serve as a producer with Leo Pearlman. Cannon is set to direct.

There is no doubt that Cabello will play an integral role in creating the film’s soundtrack. The movie will be a modern musical take on the classic Cinderella story– Disney’s original animated film premiered in 1950. After that, many adaptations have followed including a live-action movie starring Brandy in 1997, and a live-action film with Lily James in 2015.

Other films and music videos Cabello is credited with include Bright (2017), The Fate of the Furious (2017), the music videos Camila Cabello feat, Young Thug: Havana (2017), and Camila Cabello feat, Quavo: OMG (2017.

The superstar pop artist was born in 1997 in Havana, Cuba. After her start with X-Factor and leaving the Fifth Harmony group, she debuted her solo album in 2017, whose single “Crying in the Club” peaked at number 47 in the U.S. Refocusing her sound to Latin-influenced music thereafter, her debut studio album “Camila” (2018) debuted at number on the Billboard 200 chart.

Cabello has also released several collaborations, “Hey Ma” with Pitbull and J Balvin for The Fate of the Furious soundtrack.

In just 11 months, Cabello had amassed numerous awards and had won a total of 18 awards, became a multi-platinum artist with over 50 certifications, sold over 17 million units and gained over 4 billion combined YouTube and Spotify streams all without an album out.

She is set to perform at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas, NV, in September, along with Miley Cyrus, Alicia Keys, and other superstars.

Camila Cabello brings legions of fans to her big Cinderella movie, plus all the newbies who will absolutely fall in love with her after they see her on the big screen for the first time.

She is repped by William Morris Endeavor (WME), Entertainment/Talent, and The Lede Company/Publicist.
