Premieres February 8th on ABC 8:30 p.m. ET/PT

Gina Rodriguez is the star and Executive Producer of ABC’s comedy series, Not Dead Yet (debuting February 8), playing Nell Serrano, a woman attempting to jump start her life and the career she left behind five years earlier. “Nell is a self-described disaster, says Rodriguez. Returning to the newspaper she used to work for, she lands the only position available…writing obituaries. “She’s just ended a five-year relationship and is broke. Her life becomes complicated by a job she didn’t even want when Nell begins getting life advice from the dead people she’s writing about.”

Marking Gina Rodriguez’s first television series since her Golden Globe-winning five-year run on CW’s Jane the Virgin (2014-19), Not Dead Yet, adapted from Alexandra Potter‘s book, Confessions of a 40-Something F**k Up, also stars Hannah Simone (New Girl), Lauren Ash (Superstore), Rick Glassman (As We See It), Joshua Banday (Upload), and Angela Gibbs (Hacks, Black Jesus).

When asked how it feels being an Executive Producer on the series, she explains, “Well, in real life, I am about to have a baby. I accidentally got pregnant right before the show started. My husband and I were very excited about it, but it wasn’t planned. I was so afraid.” Rodriguez explained to Dean, their pilot director, the situation and that she was not about to get any smaller, on the contrary. “He just smiled and told me, ‘You are pregnant. You are a miracle. Just live in it, and we’ll figure it out.’ And they did.”

Dean Holland, also an Executive Producer, helped craft the show. “We came up with very creative ways to cover the belly, whether it was costumes or her office cubicle.” “They used plants, even a refrigerator,” quipped Gibbs, who plays Cricket, the widow of Nell’s first obituary subject, and who befriends Nell. “The directors were ingenious.”

Another ingenious aspect of this series is the built-in need to have guest stars in each episode to play the recently deceased who interact with Nell. “Oh, we have so many incredible people, Rodriguez exclaims. “We have Rhea Perlman, Paula Pell, Ed Begley, Jr., Telma Hopkins, Brittany Snow, Julia Sweeney and more to come. We got very lucky.”

Executive Producer, Casey Johnson, who co-wrote the pilot with Holland talked about the writing process, “During our writing sessions, we sort of discovered that we both always loved to read obituaries. Even the most ordinary-seeming person is fascinating if you just pay attention. And so that’s something we love about these characters. There are some people who lead extraordinary lives. Our guest stars have so much to work with in playing them.”

Rodriguez connected with her character on a family level. “My fascination with the people who came before me in my family is one of the reasons I connected with this show so much,” she explained. “I have always felt like my ancestors have been around, have been with me, have been present in my journey, taking care of me in those moments of fear or doubt.”

Gina Rodriguez as Nell (Photo: Lara Solanki | Credit: ABC)

As far as what we can expect from her character, Rodriguez had quite a lot to say, “You might meet some of Nell’s family. But it’s more about me playing a person going through an experience of establishing her identity. For sure, she can never deny her roots, but it’s not the plot. I’ve been deconstructing my identity for the past eight months, and I am nothing. I’m just dust, guys. It’s great to play somebody who gets to fail but also gets to learn from her failures. It’s really cool to be playing this role at a time when I’m continuously unraveling and rebuilding myself.”

Rodriguez has had an adventurous life. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, the youngest daughter of Puerto Rican parents. At the age of seven, Rodriguez performed at the salsa dance company, Fantasia Juvenil. She focused on salsa dancing until age 17 when she began acting. She went on to voice the title character of the Netflix animated action adventure series, Carmen Sandiego and portrayed Frida Kahlo in the world premiere of Casa Blue in the United Kingdom.

When asked if the Latino culture she grew up with is present in Nell’s life in the series, Rodriguez retorts, “It’s impossible for it to not. I’m always Latina. It’s so much of my identity. I have writers that are creating a woman and her experience, a human, and I always bring something of myself to everything I play.”

Hannah Simone, who plays Sam the editor of the Life & Style section of the newspaper interjects, “I think it’s kind of groundbreaking and refreshing that you have this show with these three women at the top of the call sheet. But this is not a show that’s about women. You have two women at the top of this call sheet who are women of color. But it’s not a show about being any particular ethnicity. That’s usually how it was in the past. You always had to explain yourself or define the show by those identities.”

Acapulco garners overwhelming response from audiences all over the world

Fresh off the world premiere of his latest film Radical at Sundance 2023 which took the Best Film Award, Eugenio Derbez’s Apple TV+ TV series Acapulco is also winning. The Apple Original comedy, starring and executive produced by Emmy and SAG-Award winner Derbez, has been picked up for a 10-episode third season, set to go into production this spring.

Following a globally acclaimed second season, the bilingual comedy series was recently hailed as “consistently hilarious,” “feel-good,” “a candy-colored neon dream of a show,” and was ranked as one of the top shows for 2022, reaching a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

“We at 3Pas Studios are thankful to Apple TV+, the perfect home for Acapulco, along with our production partner Lionsgate, filmmakers and cast and crew,” said Derbez. “We have always believed that the stories we tell about our communities and cultures can resonate with global audiences, so crank up the AC, it’s about to get a lot hotter at Las Colinas Resort.”

“We’ve seen an overwhelming response from audiences all over the world who have fallen in love with with Acapulco,” said Morgan Wandell, head of international programming for Apple TV+. “Eugenio, Austin, Ben, Eric, Kim and the talented cast and crew behind Acapulco have created a feel-good show that has a lot of heart, emotion, and laughs, and we can’t wait to bring even more of that into season three.”

In Season Three of Acapulco, it’s a time of reconciling past mistakes and exciting new beginnings. In our present story, older Maximo (Derbez) finds himself returning to a Las Colinas he no longer recognizes. While in 1985, younger Maximo continues his climb up the ladder of success while potentially jeopardizing all the relationships he’s worked so hard to build…

The upcoming third season will be showrun by Sam Laybourne (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Black-ish). In addition to Derbez, the Acapulco ensemble cast returning includes Enrique Arrizon (as Máximo Gallardo), Fernando Carsa (as Memo), Damián Alcázar (Don Pablo), Camila Perez (Julia), Chord Overstreet (Chad), Vanessa Bauche (Nora), Regina Reynoso (Sara), Raphael Alejandro (Hugo), Jessica Collins (Diane), Rafael Cebrián (Hector), Carlos Corona (Esteban) and Regina Orozco (Lupe).

Acapulco season two picked up right on the heels of season one, telling the story of 20-something Máximo Gallardo (Arrizon), whose dream comes true when he scores the job of a lifetime as a cabana boy at the hottest resort in Acapulco, Las Colinas. In 1985, Máximo must contend with upheaval at the resort, unexpected problems at home and a new love interest who just might rival the girl of his dreams. Under Don Pablo’s guidance, he sets his eyes on one day running the entire Las Colinas operation by becoming the right-hand man of Diane. Meanwhile, in present day, older Máximo (Derbez) returns to Acapulco to make peace with the recent passing of Don Pablo, where he is forced to confront some unfinished business young Máximo left behind.

Seasons one and two of Acapulco are now streaming globally on Apple TV+.

By Ana Perez

Otmara Marrero, best known for her breakthrough role as Izzy Morales in Crackle’s series StartUp, has a new home on NBC.

Marrero is starring as Annie in NBC’s new comedy series Connecting… The ensemble comedy series, created by Martin Gero (Blindspot) and Brendan Gall (The Lovebirds), follows a group of friends trying to stay connected during the pandemic. The series was shot remotely from the actors’ homes in order to ensure safety amongst the cast and crew amid COVID-19. The series takes place 10 days after California’s stay-at-home order in March was announced and will take the audience through the events of 2020 up until the election.

Although the cast had never met prior to filming the first few episodes of the show, the chemistry among them is undeniable. “I’m still a bit flabbergasted that we were able to shoot eight episodes of a network TV show from our homes and had never met nobody from the crew and the cast,” Marrero said. “That’s pretty insane.”

“It’s a testament to how great Martin and Brendan, the creators, are and the casting director who put us all together and there’s just so much chemistry,” Marrero said. “The show is just basically a group of friends relying on each other to get through the pandemic, to get through hard times and it’s kind of just like the everflow of their relationships. You know how everyday is sometimes you’re up and sometimes you’re down.”

Although Connecting… is a comedy, Marrero’s first, it still touches on the harsh realities that people are facing all across the United States and even other parts of the world. And those real fears behind the pandemic are expanded by actress Cassie Beck (High Maintenance, Chicago Med) who plays Jazmin, a doctor on the frontlines. Beck’s character unleashes all of her emotions and frustrations about the lack of supplies and making the choice between who gets a ventilator and who doesn’t to her friends in a powerful and gut-wrenching scene.

Otmara Marrero – Photo by Lili Peper

“When we were shooting that scene, I was crying real tears every time she did the monologue and boy she did that,” Marrero said. “Every time she did it we were all in real tears, I’ve never experienced something like that.”

“At the beginning of the pandemic that’s what really got me, how these people were putting their lives at risk and they couldn’t just go home to their families,” Marrero said. “They had to bunk out in separate rooms and just all the risks they were taking for us, the people, it’s insane and the government couldn’t even give the proper amount of supplies.”

Marrero is no stranger to expressing raw emotion. The Cuban-American actress recently starred in Clementine, a barrier breaking film written and directed by Lara Gallagher. “Clementine was just one of those scripts that I got and I read in one sitting and I knew that I had to do it,” Marrero said. “As soon as I read it I was like ‘Yeah, that’s me I’m Karen’ I have to tell that story.”

The romantic drama follows Karen, Marrero’s character, as she mourns the end of her relationship at her ex-girlfriend’s lake house only to find herself in a new complex relationship with another woman named Lana, portrayed by Sydney Sweeney (The Handmaid’s Tale, Euphoria).

The film, which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2019, does a beautiful job of focusing on the chemistry between the characters and letting the romance and heartbreak speak for itself.

“I’m an empath and I feel very deeply, and I think that I’ve been through some really bad relationships and I’ve had my heart broken quite a few times and I’ve experience really deep love,” Marrero said. “I think that’s what I loved most about the role, just really bearing it all and putting my heart on the table.” Initially, Marrero was passed over for the role of Karen because the character was supposed to be white, so the role went to someone else.

“They came back around and gave it to me and that to me is real representation,” Marrero said. “When we can have Latinos, black and brown kids and adults, leading movies and shows and not having to explain ourselves or not having to speak Spanish necessarily or not having to just say why we’re there.”

Although Marrero’s parents immigrated to the United States from Cuba, she wants roles that aren’t a stereotypical Latino story.

“My dad is an entrepreneur, he has his own A/C and refrigeration company, he has a very successful company. We were middle class,” Marrero said. “So me going into an audition room and doing a role that’s like talking about ICE, that’s not real to how I grew up or to me or to a bunch of other Latinos that I know and grew up with in Miami.”

Marrero commented that there are many European and Australian actors that are cast to play Americans, however not many Latinos are given the same treatment. “They’re not asking them to speak their native language, they’re not asking them to say lines in German. They’re just speaking english and they’re just playing an American,” Marrero said. “So why is it that a first-generation Latina can’t play an American as well? Marrero’s hope is to “transcend race” and land roles that are more than just a “stereotypical trope.”

“I think representation is allowing us to be the romantic lead, to be the girl next door, and to be the doctor, to be the head of the company, to be the woman in charge, to be the bad guy, to be the villain, and not constantly have to explain ourselves,” Marrero said. “Just allow us to live in these worlds. That’s the revolution I want to see for Latinos.”

Marrero’s desires are echoed in Hollywood today, especially seeing how many talented Latinos are overlooked for roles and award nominations.

“I don’t think it takes away from my latinidad, because I can speak Spanish on a dime if it’s required,” Marrero said. “But, I don’t want to speak Spanish like I’m doing you a trick like I’m a dog.”

“We just have to get comfortable with seeing humans for just being humans, for just being a woman, a man, non-binary, just whatever someones goes by,” Marrero said. “Just seeing this person exist, because that’s what the world looks like today.”

Tune in to NBC’s Connecting… on Thursdays at 8 p.m. and on Hulu the following day, to have Marrero and her incredible cast mates bring you some much needed humor.

Teenage Vampire premieres October 24th at City Base Cinema in San Antonio TX

Aaron Lee Lopez is not waiting for Hollywood to come calling. He has created his own film production company and is not looking to Hollywood to “Greenlight” his film career. He consistently produces/directs or writes at least two low budget films a year. So far this year one of his films Teenage Girl: Valerie’s Holiday has released; and the trailer for his latest film Teenage Vampire, which premieres on October 24 2020, just dropped a few days ago.

Lopez began his filmmaking career after receiving his BA from South West Texas State University. He began working in the film business as a production assistant onTV shows and movies like Grindhouse, The Hangover, and Parenthood, and others. Since then, Aaron has spent most of his time in San Antonio, Texas growing the film industry and mining the audience for his films.

Although Lopez has produced a variety of low budget films, from comedy to drama to horror, Lopez’s Mutt Productions has found its sweet spot producing films for an audience of elementary kids, middle school kids and high school kids. It has proved to be a winning formula, so much so that when you look at his IMDB page you would think you were looking a one of Hollywood’s top director/producer’s page with a listing of twelve (12) different projects all in different stages of production.

Casting is also a signature of Lopez’s type of filmmaking. He chooses put Latinos in the lead roles, adding when possible some recognizable names from Hollywood. When asked why, he simple says, “I feel that Latinos need more representation in film especially doing roles that are not just stereotypical.”

In his upcoming film, Teenage Vampire the cast includes Claire Tablizo, Jaeden Riley Juarez, Gabby Garcia, Tres Allison, Mick Buck, and Cynthia Fray. Latinos are also well represented behind the camera with Lopez, Stephen Allen Gutierrez, R. Scott Leisk, and Paul Matthew Lopez the same four producers behind the 2019 San Antonio Film Festival Audience Award Winner Teenage Girl: Valerie’s Holiday. Teenage Vampire was executive producer Kurt Wipfli and directed by Aaron Lee Lopez and written by him and his brother Paul Matthew Lopez.

Lopez directed Teenage Vampire, a story that revolves around Chase (Tablizo) and her best friend Pam (Juarez) who decide to join the cheerleading squad to become the cool kids in school. Chase, who has a crush on Sean (Buck) has been invited to join the cheer team and has been invited to a house party where she is forced to drink from a chalice as an initiation into the cheer group. In the morning she finds out that she has become half vampire and begins to grow teeth. Chase’s brother Dean (Allison) becomes concerned and starts to investigate the situation. Sin (Garcia) is the head of the Vampires; while Dean joins forces with Sean and tries to save Chase and Pam and others as they fight to escape the Vampire’s doom.

Lopez also wrote/produced and directed Teenage Girl: First Wheels whose cast included Claire Tablizo, Jaeden Riley Juarez, Lexi Villareal and Corey Feldman and Teenage Girl: Valerie’s Holiday which stars Valeria Jauregui, Jesse Borrego, Dallin McKay, Paulina Chavez (Feliz NaviDAD, The Expanding World of Ashely Garcia), Montana Leann, Sandra Nori, and Paul Matthew Lopez.

To get his film out to audiences, Lopez works with a sales rep and he told that he takes a direct approach for getting his films to theaters; he usually just goes straight to the local theaters and works out a distribution deal with them because he believe there is an audience for them. “These films have a market because not many people are doing this John Hughes style 80’s type of movies anymore,” he explained. “And that’s what I do best, is try and recreate that nostalgic feeling that I used to have as a kid when I went to the theater.”

Lopez was also as a writer/producer of the feature film The Margarita Man (2019) which starred Anthony Guajardo, Renessa Sanders, Sean Koetting, Jesse Borrego, Valeria Jauregui, Pepe Serna, Barry Corbin, Paul Matthew Lopez and Danny Trejo. Like many Hollywood directors, Lopez likes to work with the same actors casting them over several of his films.

While Hollywood is grappling with diversity and how to “get it right” when it comes to the inclusion of Latinos in front of, and behind the camera, Lopez has been doing it “right” in San Antonio, TX.

Teenage Vampire will be having its world premiere at City Base Cinema in San Antonio TX, on October 24, 2020 and will have a limited theatrical run.

The post Director Aaron Lee Lopez’s “Teenage Vampire” Comedy For Tweens first appeared on .

By Justina Bonilla

Jesus Trejo, who is a staple in the Los Angeles standup comedy scene, just released his long-awaited first comedy special debut on Showtime, Jesus Trejo: Stay at Home Son, which premiered on May 29, 2020. It’s now available to view on Showtime and for streaming on the Showtime app and Hulu Showtime add-on.

Trejo has spent 13 years making a name for himself in the live standup comedy circuit. Along with multiple recognitions, he was most notably featured in the “10 Comics to Watch in 2017” list in the business trade Variety , alongside popular comedians Tiffany Haddish and Hasan Minhaj. Trejo also hosts his own YouTube show with comedians, Tacos Con Todo (Tacos with Everything), with an array of popular comedians from Joey Diaz, to Pauly Shore, to fellow Long Beach native Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias.

The 33-year-old Long Beach, CA native began his interest in comedy, like most comics, as a fan of comedy. As a child, Trejo was exposed to the comedy of his Mexican immigrant parents, including the popular Mexican comedic icon Cantinflas. Another early major influence, was Bobby’s World, an early 1990’s animated series starring standup comedian Howie Mandel. Eventually, he discovered and became a fan of a wide variety of heavyweight standup comedians such as Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Hicks, Sam Kinson, and Richard Pryor. Trejo was also heavily influenced by the pioneering Latino comedians Paul Rodriguez and George Lopez seeing them as “voices to my upbringing”.

For years, Trejo, especially during his high school years, dreamed of being a comedian and having his own comedy special, like his comedic heroes. When he revealed this dream to his parents, they were let down over his decision of going into comedy. A reaction most successful comedians faced in their earlier days. Trejo’s parents, like many immigrant parents, saw the American Dream as going to college and having a job or career with a stable income. Although Trejo did attend college, Cal State Dominguez Hills, majoring in marketing, his calling was standup comedy. With comedy in his heart, he continued to pursue his heart’s passion.

Trejo’s fist standup performance was at 20-years-old, at an open mic in Long Beach, where he “bombed”. As a result, it took him one year to get back on the stage. After getting over that initial setback Trejo became more persistent in standup comedy, navigating through both the achievements and disappointments that come with being a standup comedian. He realized early on, “Even though I love the art, you know there is still a business side to it. You have to match up the art with the business”. Over time his weekend open mic participation slowly turned into paid gigs, eventually launching his professional comedic career.

Recognizing Trejo’s talent at an AARP comedy event, AARP Studios made Trejo the focus of their first original film, Care to Laugh. They filmed for a year, documented Trejo being caregiver when both of his parents were diagnosed with cancer. Jesus moved back home with his parents to oversee their care and to take over his father’s landscaping business. All this while also trying to pursue your own career and personal goals.

While it’s traditional for Latino families to help care for elderly parents, the role of the caregiver is usually expected to be filled by the women of the family, while the men’s role is limited to just working outside of the home and bringing home a paycheck. Trejo challenges this expectation, showing a positive and progressive image of the Latino man. He demonstrates how a son can be just as capable and responsible as a daughter to care for elderly parents as a caregiver. Also, he shows that Latino men can be caring, compassionate, and nurturing. Trejo wants to, “Write a positive narrative of our culture, and to have more men like myself step up and care for our parents.” A perspective he went in-depth within his special Stay at Home Son.

Stay at Home Son, was filmed over two shows at The El Portal Theatre in West Hollywood, CA. Through his unique and sincere brand of humor, Trejo discussed a variety of subjects of his life, from childhood to the present. Most notably detailing the funny, yet awkward situations of caring for his parents as an only child. With situations such as having them follow a strict medical diet, only to find their stash of chicharróns. Another notable story of the special was the awkwardness of a seven-year-old Trejo having to translate for his Spanish-only speaking mother, and the demands of an English-speaking thief trying to rob them. This special was a refreshing and funny perspective of a Latino Millennial filled with sincerity.

For the premiere of Stay at Home Son Trejo and his parents had their own viewing party at home, with pizza, cake, and a good table cloth. After watching the special and seeing all of the work their son put into this special, they were finally proud of him. They got to witness their son succeed in his American Dream. This special was just the beginning of what will, no doubt, be a bright future in comedy.

In my conversation with Trejo, I mentioned how exciting it was to see another Latino with a standup special like Garbiel Iglesias and George Lopez. He responded with an abundance of sincerity, “I’m very fortunate and I’m blown away to be mentioned in the conversation, in the scene with those huge names.” Trejo continued, “I still have a long way to go. These guys are legends and have put in the work. Overall, I hope to one day be in those conversations more and more, but I realize [how much] work [it will require]. I’m excited to get to work and put out more specials.”
