Comedian Gabriel Iglesias has announced he’s got Covid-19 despite being vaccinated.

In a video posted on social media, the funnyman also known as Fluffy delivered the somber news saying he experienced symptoms in spite of getting inoculated against the pandemic disease.

Body aches and chills led him to get tested twice, confirming he had caught the virus, Iglesias says in the video. Consequently, the artist has gone into isolation for two weeks, suspending his work schedule that included his shows at the Tobin Center in San Antonio, Texas, where he was scheduled to wrap up about a month of performances July 17.

Iglesias shared the news on his birthday, July 15, taking it in stride and even attempting to elicit a laugh from people watching the video. “Not the way I wanted to spend my birthday but at least I’m alive,” he says. “And I have cake. I can’t taste it or smell it but I have cake. Wish me luck.”

A small percentage of people fully vaccinated against Covid-19 will still develop the disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control. “However, fully vaccinated people are much less likely to be hospitalized or die than people with similar risk factors who are not vaccinated,” says the CDC on its website.

Iglesias concludes his videos with advice, saying, “Be careful out there.”

Fluffy is a top-selling comedian in the U.S. His Netflix show Mr. Iglesias, which lasted two seasons, is still available on the streamer with which he has additional deals.

Iglesias is the voice of Speedy Gonzales, Looney Tunes’ “fastest mouse in all of Mexico,” in the new film live-action/animated sports comedy film Space Jam: A New Legacy that opens this weekend.

Tony Award winner and Golden Globe and Oscar nominee Lin-Manuel Miranda is known for his activism in education, voting participation and diversity in the arts. This month the Hamilton star will join an effort to encourage people to get the COVID vaccine.

Miranda will appear on NBC’s Roll Up Your Sleeves, a special aimed at raising public awareness about immunization against the coronavirus and encouraging people to get the shots. The show is produced by ATTN:, Civic Nation and Deviants Media. It is executive produced by Jarrett Moreno, Tom Werner and Valerie Jarrett. The special will be presented by Walgreens, the nation’s second-largest pharmacy chain that is now offering COVID vaccines at stores in more than a dozen states.

Lin-Manuel Miranda in Mary Poppins Returns. (Photo: Disney)

The Mary Poppins Returns star will join former First Lady Michelle Obama, Dr. Anthony Fauci and actor Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) on the vaccination special that airs on April 18. They will “educate and empower audiences to make this important decision to help put the pandemic behind us,” says the TV network in a press statement.

Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden, will be interviewed by McConaughey. Fauci will also separate facts from fiction about the vaccines and urge all Americans to do their part in getting the vaccine when eligible.

The program will include comedy acts, informative packages and real-life stories.

“We are honored to present an hour of television devoted to increasing vaccinations in America and help end a cataclysmic pandemic,” said Jen Neal, executive vice president of live events and specials. “The entertainment, comedic and music communities, along with First Lady Michelle Obama, have come together for the special, which will be inspirational, poignant and, at times, humorous. The overriding message: get vaccinated, end the pandemic and get your life and the life of the country back on track.”

A lot is riding on the vaccination efforts, according to other people involved in the special. “The ability to get people back to work and kids back in school, getting us reunited with family and friends and attending concerts, sporting events and many other activities we hold dear, is contingent upon people getting vaccinated,” said Matthew Segal, ATTN: co-founder. “At ATTN: we believe in the power of entertainment to inform audiences, and we’re thrilled to partner with NBC, Civic Nation, Walgreens and many great public figures and performers to get out this critical message.”

Miranda is an award-winning composer, lyricist and actor. He is best known as the creator and original star of the Broadway hit Hamilton. This play won 11 Tony Awards, including two for Miranda for book and score of a musical. Hamilton’s original cast recording won a Grammy for best musical theater album. His song “How Far I’ll Go” for the animated film Moana won him nominations for the Oscar and Golden Globe. He also scored two other Golden Globe nominations for his acting in Hamilton the movie and Mary Poppins Returns.

The Puerto Rican actor has used his platform to advocate for various social issues. He made a public service announcement for the Census 2020 along with Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and helped raise funds for Puerto Rico relief efforts after Hurricane Maria. He has supported the Black Lives Matter movement, too.

Miranda’s work has also inspired grassroots action during the pandemic. Recently, a group of doctors from Northern California adapted a song from Miranda’s Broadway musical hit Hamilton to promote COVID vaccination. Vax’n 8 produced the video My Shot! to address the social, scientific and political issues around immunization.

Internet domain registrar GoDaddy recently launched an initiative to support small businesses forced to close their physical spaces because of COVID-19.
Called #OpenWeStand, the collaboration also involves Silicon Valley heavyweights PayPal, GoFundMe and Salesforce — which have been thriving despite the coronavirus, reaping profits from helping their customers focus on digitization.

#OpenWeStand.org provides tools, widgets, resources and blogs for small businesses to use during the lockdown phases of COVID-19. The underlying goal of the initiative, its backers say, is helping small businesses keep their digital doors open while their physical ones are closed.
For example, GoDaddy’s revenue was up 11.5% year-over-year, according to its Q1 2020 earnings results. The company also plans to buy back $500 million of its own stock, which analysts say suggests the company believes it is undervalued.
“GoDaddy delivered strong results in the first quarter,” said GoDaddy CEO Aman Bhutani. “In this time of uncertainty for small businesses, we are laser-focused on innovating for our customers; their digital presence is more important than ever. We believe our focus on customer value remains the best way to create value for our shareholders.”
Similarly, PayPal said it added 20.2 million new accounts in the first quarter of this year as businesses pivoted to it and similar online payment solutions due to COVID-19.
“As our platform sees record increases in both new customer accounts and transactions, it is clear that PayPal’s products are more important and relevant than ever,” said PayPal CEO Dan Schulman. “The strength of our customer value proposition combined with the significant acceleration of digital payments in April resulted in increased demand and engagement.”
During COVID-19, PayPal waived some fees for merchants, at least through June 30. Furthermore, it deferred business loan and advance payments, at no additional cost. PayPal also participated in the Paycheck Protection Program for small business access to federal loans under the CARES Act.
Among the small businesses featured by #OpenWeStand.org is Kendall Antonelli’s Austin, Texas-based cheese shop, which gets some exposure in GoDaddy’s #OpenWeStand television commercial.

Kendall and John Antonelli serve customers at their popular “Antonelli’s Cheese Shop” in Austin, Texas.
That has helped draw attention to Antonelli’s Cheese Shop, and Antonelli appreciates the Internet giant connecting her small business to other resources.
“Now, we feel like the cheerleaders behind us want to see us succeed,” said Antonelli. “The people at GoDaddy said, ‘Hey, here’s an awesome opportunity we think you’d be interested in. If you are, fill out this form.’ We did and got approved. It’s called Fortune’s Rebuild Program, which brings small business owners from across the country to learn from leading experts and each other.”

Her shop quickly pivoted to virtual cheese events, which have turned out to be very popular. The shop hosts up to four virtual events per night; at least two events per week have at least 150 virtual attendees.
“We were in danger of losing 50% of our revenue, so we took those [events] virtual overnight,” said Antonelli. “The pandemic has been a vortex, a whirlwind and challenging. That said, we’ve been very fortunate, and so far, managed to stay ahead of the game.”

#OpenWeStand is also providing a morale boost for companies like Antonelli’s. “It’s always hard… how you quantify these things,” said Antonelli. “We’re grateful to them for the coverage and opportunity. It could very well be a part of our current success.”

Once it was becoming clear that the COVID-19 outbreak was spreading rapidly in Italy, all European countries moved to lockdown to protect their citizens.
Airfields were closed, and people were directed by their governments to stay home. Museums, restaurants, hotels, and all social venues also closed, with the exception of supermarkets and pharmacies. These measures produced severe economic results, especially in the tourism industry.

In Holland, the vital tourism industry is hard-hit, and authorities fear the situation will deepen this year. Some 800,000 people are employed in hotels, outdoor recreation businesses, and restaurants. Tourist attraction venues, including fun parks and amenities for North Sea beaches, also provide significant employment. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines employs more than 44,000 people, bringing in more than 10 million tourists in spring. In the summer months, more than 15 million tourists visit. Bus and taxi companies transport large groups to museums, cities and the famous fields of flowers.

The “Keukenhof Express” bus drives through the flower fields of De Keukenhof in Lisse, Netherlands. (Photo courtesy: De Keukenhof)

Since the onset of COVID-19 and the lockdown of The Netherlands until at least June 1, however, the country’s flower bulb farming sector has been severely affected. One of the world’s largest flower gardens, Keukenhof in Lisse, is closed this year.
In the northern part of the province around the cities of Alkmaar and Den Helder, tulips are also abundant, and bulb farmers can be found in provinces like Friesland, Groningen, and Flevoland, where they also grow cattle, grain or potatoes. But with no tourists this year, the industry—and the country as a whole—have suffered severely.
Tourists typically spend some 80 billion euros, approximately $86.8 billion, per year, about 9% of The Netherlands’ gross national product.
Once the government eases lockdown restrictions, new rules will be in place for society as a whole, including social distancing. This will apply to tourists as well.
“When we can release the state of emergency, we shall order complete new rules for lifestyle,” Prime Minister Mark Rutte said. The government wants everybody in the streets walking 1.5 meters, nearly 5 feet, apart, which Rutte calls “the new 1.5 meters society.” He also ordered restaurants to keep tables the same distance apart and for waiters to wear face masks.
For visitors to the Keukenhof gardens, the new measures will mean keeping that same distance between people. Bulb growers already think they will lose, per company, several million euros every year, with restrictions on travel and the number of visitors.
Until this year, tourists typically arrive for the popular flower season from mid-April to the end of May, with the majority coming from China, Japan, India, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and Russia, as well as from all of southern Europe. They also come by car and rail from Germany, Belgium, France, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Hungary, Austria, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
While Italy and Spain have been hit particularly hard by the virus, the Netherlands has more than 44,000 confirmed cases, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, and more than 5,713 people have died in the country of 17.3 million people.
Once airlines get permission to fly at full capacity again to Schiphol Amsterdam Airport, many hope that tourists will return. Hotels may reopen and backpackers may find a bed in youth hostels and camping sites. But bus tours to the flower fields or other sites will be difficult. As in airplanes, buses will only use one of every six seats. Taxis will just accept only two passengers.
Restaurants or terraces will also limit the number of guests. Where normally 100 people find a chair, now only 20 or so will be seated.

In 2021, officials hope, it will again be possible to walk along with the flower bed fields in spring.

Paycheck Protection Program, SBA Loans: Minority-owned Businesses Update

By Elia Esparza

According to Forbes.com, in an article written by Dane Stranger, “…the COVID-19 crisis is showing that many American small businesses have cash-flow issues and effectively live the equivalent of ‘paycheck to paycheck.’ Sharp declines in consumer demand can easily tip them into the red, and perhaps failure.”

It is the same for minority-owned businesses, and maybe more so, who are dependent on any Federal assistance offered. Yet, the first batch of stimulus relief issued was to larger corporate businesses, with over 500 employees, leaving out the smaller companies that are the core of small businesses. After being called out, companies like The Lakers and the Shake Shack were shamed into returning the millions of dollar loans they received. Who thought they were the small businesses that needed “saved”?

The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), offers loans for up to $10 million, and the Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loans. The first initial PPP loans allocated $439 billion and within two weeks they had run out of money. The new PPP bill passed congress with a bipartisan vote and was released with an additional $310 billion for loans (and $12 billion for SBA salaries and other costs). These loan programs are designed to help businesses meet payroll, make debt payments, and whatever other bills they must pay in order to keep their businesses going.

The new stimulus bill sets aside $30 billion for small lenders (with consolidated assets less than $10 billion) and $30 billion for midsize lenders (with consolidated assets between $10 billion and $50 billion) to ensure the more rural, women-owned and minority-owned small businesses get loans this round. *Source: Smartasset.com

Aside from banking institutions, there are other federally insured depository institutions, federally insured credit unions, Farm Credit System Institution, and select Fintech Lenders who are approved by the SBA as a 7a lender, PayPay, Google, and Quickbooks. The maximum PPP loan amount is 2.5 times your average monthly payroll costs, up to $10 million. Only one PPP loan per applicant.

“It’s not only a black and brown issue. It’s a statewide issue. It’s an economic issue.” – Rosario Ubiera-Minaya, Executive Director, Amplify Latinx

An NPR Radio WBUR-FM article, titled “Federal Aid Might Not Reach Small Businesses Owned By People of Color, Advocates Fear, (April 26, 2020), stated that concerns from “community development groups, along with advocates for Latinx, black, and Asian business owners, are worried that minority-owned small businesses could be left behind in the latest round of federal aid.”

Latin Heat chose two minority-owned businesses, who applied. One, did receive a PPP small loan, and the other hasn’t had any response to date. We checked in on them to ask how they’re doing during this pandemic crisis and how it has affected their businesses:

The Entrepreneur

Juan De Lira, Owner, Sherwood Florist Inc., City of Claremont CA

Mr. De Lira applied for both PPP and SBA loans, he was awarded a PPP loan in the amount of $31,500, a process that took about 10 days from start to finish. But it was not Wells Fargo where his business banks, rather a nearby community bank where he secured the loan. To date, he is still waiting to hear back from SBA.

Latin Heat: Tell us about your business.

JDL: We own Sherwood Florist Inc., and have been in business for about 37 years. We used to have several stores throughout the city but now we only have one left here in Claremont.

LH: You applied for a PPP loan?

JDL: Yes. Actually, we applied for both of the loans, the one that was the stimulus where they give you $10K, and we also applied to the SBA. We did also apply for the Payroll Protection Program (PPP), which is to cover payroll for eight weeks and it includes some extra money for other related expenses such as rent and utilities. We applied through our regular bank Wells Fargo, which we’ve been a customer for years. But when we applied, the program was already closed and that the funds had already been allocated. Mind you, they announced the program on a Saturday and we were there first thing Monday morning and were told, the program was now closed.

LH: How frustrating!

JDL: Yes. We couldn’t even fill out an application let alone submit any documentation to back up our request. But then I happen to talk to a friend who told me that I should go to other financial institutions in my community.

LH: He basically told you not to give up and keep applying!

JDL: Yes, and that’s exactly what we did. We applied to a local community financial institution here in the city of Claremont. They don’t even have normal banking functions like checking accounts. A friend of mine had recommended we try the local institutions and to even try Google and PayPal programs.

LH: Wow! You didn’t give up and how great for your friend to advise you about the Google and PayPal type of financial entities.

JDL: I’m so glad we paid attention and went scouting for other financial places. We found one place in my community. We spoke to them and they said, ‘sure you should apply.’ He gave us the application and we filled it out and went through them. And, a couple of days later they called asking for additional information relating to our corporation, insurance info, payroll records for 2019, and first quarter for 2020. We submitted those papers on a Monday and they told us that the loan package was in order and that they would submit it and get back to us in five days.

LH: Did they?

JDL: Sure enough, in five days, we called them and they said ‘your loan has been approved’ and that the loan approval was only good for two days. So we rushed in, signed the necessary paperwork, and a few days later we received our PPP loan of $31,500. It’s not a large loan but enough to keep us afloat for a little longer as we wait for the SBA loan to come through.

LH: Why do you think there are so many who have not been approved for a PPP loan?

JDL: Maybe it’s not giving up and not being easily discouraged. I recall hearing about the PPP loans on one Saturday and early the following Monday, I was at Wells Fargo, whom I’d been a customer for years, telling me the program was closed, no more applications being accepted. Later I mentioned to a friend and it was he who told me that I should go to the local community banks and other financial institutions… that they’d probably be more inclined and sensitive to the small business owner’s crisis because of COVID19.

LH: So not giving up is crucial—

JDL: Absolutely! I thought it was only banks giving out PPP and SBA loans. But there are many insured depository institutions offering PPP loans. Search within your community. Yes, even if our bank turns you down, do not give up. Instead press on and again, look at the lending institutions in your own backyard.

LH: You’re now waiting for the SBA loan?

JDL: Yes and while there are no guarantees because it is a bigger amount of loan, the PPP has provided some temporary relief.

LH: What’s your advice to other business owners?

JDL: To be patient and not give up. We persisted and we got approved for the PPP even though, supposedly, the funds had already run out. Try other financial institutions. The big-name banks are concentrating on those multi-million-dollar loans, clearly, they make more money in fees, but there are lending places like local community banks or mortgage firms that concentrate on small business loans. They have more loan quotas to fill, especially for smaller amounts.

On The Lender Side

Gina Linn Espinoza & Rene Quiñones, Chief Strategy Officer, Commercial Metroplex (Las Vegas, NV)

Commercial Metroplex is a SBA-certified lender, one of 300 agencies given delegated authority to speedily process PPP loans. The day before they were to launch their new portal to assist people with the processing of their small business loans, SBA informed them that all monies had already been allotted. After the shock and anger settled, Gina is applying her experience as a learning curve and has led her to a new mission of advocacy.

LH: Your experience comes through your husband’s company, Commercial Metroplex Lending Group. Can you tell us a little about your work?

GLE: As you know, we were gearing up the agents of Commercial Metroplex to call and help people with their PPP applications. We had our portal for 24 hours and were running tests when we were informed that the millions of PPP funds allotted had been exhausted and that the program was suspended.

LH: What?! And, you had no forewarning?

GLE: None. It was shocking and disappointing to find out that publicly traded large businesses had scooped up all the money set aside for small businesses. I was moved to tears and then became angry because I grew up in a small business. In fact, small business put me through private schools, ballet class, piano lessons, and put food on our family’s table.

LH: This has been deeply personal for you?

GLE: It has. The day the SBA ran out of money, I thought of the families that would be affected by this by the fact that selfish big business owners stole without considering small business owners and their families.

LH: I can tell this disappointment was painful—

GLE: Yes. It was all so sudden and without forewarning… It took me back to my own childhood, when at around 5 or 6 years old, I would get into my dad’s white 57 Chevy pick-up truck and drive around our small-town collecting coins from soda vending machines my dad had placed around town. We would drive to them, clean and restock them, and pull out all the coins and place them in a money bag to take to the bank the following day. That was our family business. So yes, I was extremely disappointed.

LH: Has this discouraged you from trying again when the next rounds of stimulus funds come around?

GLE: No. In fact to the contrary. I am who I am because of small business. And, after a good cry I made it my personal mission to get as many small businesses into the SBA portal system in queue for the next round of funding. I would use my superpowers for good. To date we’re reaching 2 million dollars of PPP loans into the queue for funding.

The following is PPP information offered by Gina Linn Espinosa:

• PPP are taken from banks and lenders. Only the EIDL application is directly from SBA website.
