Inspired by the original Swedish novel and film, Let The Right One In, Showtime is currently airing a 10-episode series of the same name, which debuted early in October. The series focuses on Mark, played by Mexican actor Demián Bichir (A Better Life) and his daughter Eleanor, portrayed by 12-year-old Madison Taylor Baez (Selena: The Series), whose lives were changed 10 years earlier when young Eleanor was turned into a vampire. The title refers to the legend that vampires cannot enter someone’s abode unless they are invited.

Bichir said he admired the novel and the film. “I am not usually a big fan of dark stories,” Bichir admits, “It is always tricky territory. We actors go deep into anything we do, and the task is not to get too buried within the somberness. But playing the father of a child played by Madison, with all her energy and vitality, brings a lightness to the show. That made our two characters an engaging duo and the whole project enjoyable.”

“This is my first horror show, and at first it seemed daunting,” admits Baez. “I knew it would be hard. But working with Demián really lightened the atmosphere. After filming all the gory scenes, I would have a scene with Demián or Ian, who plays Isaiah, Eleanor’s friend. That immediately brought a nice change for the mood of the show.”

“The episodes were emotionally and physically exhausting,” Bichir admits. “But the energy generated by the whole cast was inspired by the scripts created by our Showrunner Andrew Hinderaker (Penny Dreadful, Pure Genius, and Away) and his staff.

Hinderaker, also a great fan of the novel by John Lindqvist (2004) was surprised how much he liked the film, directed by Tomas Alfredson (2008). “For me, the movie is not only one of the best horror movies ever made, but probably the most moving. That’s why I am proud to have assembled our extraordinary team of artists to do this series.”

Actress Madison Taylor Baez

Showtime picked up the show in September 2021, with Hinderaker as executive producer alongside Marty Adelstein (Last Man Standing, Teen Wolf), Becky Clements (Cowboy Bebop), Seith Mann, who also directs (Raising Dion), with Alissa Bachner (Snowpiercer) and Ben Rosenblatt (10 Cloverfield Lane, Prey) as co-executive producers, Demián Bichir (Grand Hotel) as a producer, and Paul Leonardo Jr. (Severance) as a co-producer.

Hearing the list of production credits, Bichir, who was born in Mexico City and was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his role in A Better life, chuckles. “Producers and directors don’t know, but whenever they audition us, we audition them because we have to make sure that they are wonderful people, knowledgeable and cultured…if we are lucky. I also wondered how they were going to expand that wonderful two-hour film into ten-episodes of television.”

Actor Demian Bichir

“I certainly feel lucky to have been cast,” says Baez. “When I first got the script and this role, I definitely knew there were certain lengths that I was going to have to go, and I was willing to accept it, and that definitely worked out for me. Especially during those late nights of filming, all of those hard scenes with lots of blood on my face. The result was definitely worth it.”

Baez might have felt lucky to be portraying Eleanor because she is not known as a dramatic actress. Raised in Orange County of Hispanic and Filipino descent, she was dubbed a “musical prodigy” at age eleven, using her own powerful singing voice in her portrayal of youthful Selena Quintanilla in the series, Selena, and was a semi-finalist on America’s Got Talent.

Also in the cast are Anika Noni Rose (The Princess and the Frog, Everything, Everything, Maid), Grace Gummer (American Horror Story, Dr. Death), Kevin Carroll (The Walking Dead), Josh Wingate, Ian Foreman, Caroline Neff (Chicago P.D.), Jimmie Saito (The Blacklist), Fernanda Andrade (Moon Knight, The Devil Inside), Michael Patrick Thornton (Private Practice, The Exorcist), Don Darryl Rivera, and Jacob Buster.

Rose, who plays New York policewoman Naomi Cole, is delighted to be cast in a role that provides tension for Mark and Eleanor. “As well as being a very focused cop, I am also Mark’s neighbor and the mother of Isaiah,” says Rose. “Being a cop means that she is potentially more watchful than your average neighbor.”

Bichir adds, “You also have to know that the City of New York also is a huge part of the story. The City has this personality that is so brutally appealing. The biggest challenge for me was that it was the long winter. I just couldn’t believe when Madison had to go barefoot or with no jacket on.”

Baez laughs. “I just stayed in character.”

Let The Right One In is produced by Tomorrow Studios and Showtime Networks, distributed by Paramount Global Distribution Group and airs on Showtime on Fridays at (10pm)

The post Demian Bichir in The Horror of ‘Let the Right One In’ first appeared on .

Rita Moreno, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Demián Bichir will be among the first recipients of the Critics Choice Association’s inaugural Celebration of Latino Cinema, honoring artists who have made significant contributions to film in 2021. The event will take place Dec. 2.

West Side Story star Moreno, one of a handful of actors who have won the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards, popularly referred to as EGOT, will be presented with the Icon Award.

Hamilton legend Miranda, an acclaimed songwriter, actor and director will receive the Visionary Award.

Bichir, one of four Latino actors nominated for the Oscar for a Best Actor in the history of the Academy, will receive the Career Achievement Award.

“We are thrilled to be launching the first annual Celebration of Latino Cinema which recognizes the talented performers and skilled professionals who create the acclaimed films we are so proud to honor,” says Claudia Puig, CCA member and co-programmer of the event. Founded in 2019 with the merger of the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association, CCA is reportedly the largest critics organization in the U.S and Canada representing almost 500 television, radio and online critics and entertainment reporters.

Moreno has won all four of the most prestigious awards in show business: an Oscar, a Tony, two Emmys, and a Grammy. She recently co-starred in the critically acclaimed Latino reimagining of Norman Lear’s classic sitcom One Day At A Time. Her acclaimed documentary Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go For It had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival before being released in theaters nationwide and was aired on PBS American Masters this fall. The Puerto Rican actress also co-stars in and is an exec producer of the Steven Spielberg remake of the acclaimed musical film West Side Story, set for release this December.

A recipient of the Peabody Career Achievement Award and the Kennedy Center Honor for her lifetime contributions to American culture, Moreno was also honored by her peers as the 50th recipient of the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. She recently served as Grand Marshal of the Rose Parade and the National Puerto Rican Day Parade. Moreno’s first-ever all-Spanish language album Una Vez Más was produced by multiple-Grammy Award-winner Emilio Estefan. Her first book, Rita Moreno: A Memoir is a New York Times bestseller. Also a dancer and singer, Moreno has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush and the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama.

Songwriter, actor and director Miranda has also won some of the most prestigious honors in the arts, including a Pulitzer Prize, Grammy, Emmy and Tony. He is the creator and original star of Broadway’s Tony-winning musical hits Hamilton and In the Heights. His additional Broadway credits include Freestyle Love Supreme, Bring It On: The Musical and the 2009 revival of West Side Story with Spanish translations. The New York native of Puerto Rican descent is the recipient of the 2015 MacArthur Foundation Award, the 2018 Kennedy Center Honors and the 2019 Portrait of a Nation Prize. He received an Emmy Award with Tom Kitt for their song, “Bigger.” Two of his most recent projects are Disney’s Encanto, now playing in theaters, and Netflix’s current musical movie tick, tick… BOOM! that marked his film directorial debut.

For his part, Bichir is among the most prominent and active Latino actors in Hollywood today. He received a Best Actor Oscar nomination in 2012 for his role in Chris Weitz’s A Better Life, becoming the first Mexican-born actor to be nominated in that category by the Academy since Anthony Quinn in 1957. This year, Lionsgate celebrates the 10th anniversary of A Better Life, which also earned Bichir nominations for the Independent Spirit and SAG awards. He recently received rave reviews for his performance in the film Land, directed by Robin Wright, and received a 2021 Ariel Best Actor nomination for his performance in the independent film Danyka in Mexico.

Bichir was born in Mexico City and has starred in critically acclaimed films all over the world, with more than 20 titles shot in Mexico and countries such as Spain, Ireland, Argentina, Colombia, Bolivia, New Zealand and Australia. His film credits include Steven Soderbergh’s Che, Oliver Stone’s Savages, Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills, Paul Feig’s The Heat, Richard Shepard’s Dom Hemingway, Ridley Scott’s Alien, George Clooney’s The Midnight Sky, and Adam Wingard’s blockbuster hit Godzilla Vs. Kong.

“Films by our honorees represent the diverse and multi-faceted Latino community, and reflect our increasingly inclusive industry,” states Clayton Davis, CCA board member and co-programmer of the Celebration of Latino Cinema.

The event will be produced by Madelyn Hammond and Javier Infante of Madelyn Hammond & Associates. Production company Stagedge will be responsible for transforming the show into an immersive virtual experience.

A portion of the proceeds from the event will be donated to LA Collab, a project with the mission to accelerate Latino access, visibility and representation in the entertainment industry.

The event will take place Dec. 9.

Academy Award-nominee Demian Bichir plays another father figure in the adventure sci-fi drama Chaos Walking, which opens nationwide this weekend.

Bichir (Ben Moore), is one of several adoptive fathers to the film’s central character, young Todd played by Spiderman actor Tom Holland. In a planet of a not-too-distant future, women have disappeared while the surviving men developed a condition called the “Noise,” projecting their thoughts as images others can see. One day a mysterious young woman named Viola (Daisy Ridley) crash-lands on the strange planet, and Todd must protect her when her life is threatened. Ben, along with Todd’s other adoptive father Cillian (played by Kurt Sutter), helps the young couple escape.

Playing a father figure put Bichir on the Hollywood map, for which he was nominated in his starring role in A Better Life. He also played a similar role in another recent sci-fi drama, the Golden-Globe nominated The Midnight Sky, directed and starred by George Clooney.

ABC’s New Landmark Series, Grand Hotel Debuts on June 17th

Review by Luis Reyes.

Grand Hotel, the new ABC television series is a stunning cultural touchstone, defining representation and diversity on 21stcentury America in this Miami set glossy entertainment soap opera.

Latinos as part of the mainstream American scene as depicted in this ground-breaking progra puts Latinos front and center of the American dream as owners of a posh Riviera Grand Hotel in glitzy contemporary Miami Beach.

Grand Hotel portrays Latinos as nuanced multi-dimensional characters if somewhat clichéd but surprising storylines that are usually reserved for traditionally white privileged characters on television. Grand Hotel centers on members of the Mendoza family who own the hotel, the staff that runs it and the explosive secrets that will come to play during the run of the series.

The diverse cast is made up of veteran actors and fresh attractive young talent who bring all the characters to life beginning with Oscar nominee Demian Bichir. He is a commanding presence as Santiago Mendoza who has lost his wife and is about to lose his hotel when he finds himself in debt to dangerous people.

Roselyn Sanchez (Devious Maids) in a role worthy of her talent, as his “Trophy” wife Gigi, who proves to be as smart and manipulative as she is beautiful, captivates with her powerful portrayal. His daughter Alicia played by Denyse Tontz (The Fosters), recent business school graduate returns to the hotel to help out the family business where she is eager to share her ideas and confronted by her stepmother (Sanchez).

Bryan Craig, (The Young and The Restless) plays Javi Mendoza, the physically handicapped son who is desperate to prove his worth. Wendy Raquel Robinson (The Steve Harvey Show) plays Mrs. P, the loyal human resources director who keeps an eye on all the employee doings. Justina Adorno (Seven Seconds) and newbie Feliz Ramirez play the rival twin Mendoza stepsister. Shalim Ortiz (Lady of Steel) is the shady Mateo Also in a pivotal role is Lincoln Younes (Love Child) who plays Danny, a new employee who is trying to find out about his sister’s strange disappearance from the hotel. While singer/actor Jeancarlos Canela (who was also recently cast in Netflix’s The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia) has a showy scene-stealing role as a rapper called El Rey.

Chris Warren Jr. (High School Musical franchise) is effective as a young employee as is Anne Winters (13 Reasons Why, Zac and Mia) as Ingrid the young maid who finds herself in an unwanted pregnancy and who seems will be the focus of much drama as the story develops.

Let me be clear, this is a sumptuous fantasy entertainment at its best. written with an understanding of the American-Latino experience, the scripts are smart, fast<g class="gr_ gr_10 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="10" data-gr-id="10">–</g>moving <g class="gr_ gr_12 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar multiReplace" id="12" data-gr-id="12">have</g> strong character interplay and are hip to contemporary culture. The storylines are full of plot twist and <g class="gr_ gr_11 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar multiReplace" id="11" data-gr-id="11">turns</g>, with accessible characters that play out against a new young hipster millennial Miami Beach. Beautifully dressed, perfectly groomed characters abound.

Grand Hotel is based on Spain’s mega-hit Gran Hotel, a 20th century-themed soap, and this ABC network, English-language version was developed by executive producer Brian Tanen with a Hollywood Latino touch.

The Grand Hotel storyline is replete with well-rounded loving relationships, personal secrets and mysteries, romantic entanglements, and scandals. The writing staff consists of Ramon Campos, Gema R. Neira, Bob Daily, Davah Avena, Desta Tedros Reff, <g class="gr_ gr_8 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="8" data-gr-id="8">and</g> Nicki Renna.

Much of the credit must go to executive producer Eva Longoria, who also directed an episode and appears in the drama as the deceased mother in flashbacks.

The host of talented people who have contributed both in front of and behind the camera cannot be overlooked. They include cinematographer Alison Kelly, casting director Doreen Frankel and Sibby Kirchgessner, and production designer Stan Saklad among many others.

Grand Hotel is filmed on location in Miami Beach’s world-famous resort hotel Fontainebleau Hotel, which was the location for such iconic movies as Goldfinger and Jerry Lewis’s The Bellboy and where iconic entertainers Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. performed.

Grand Hotel is the best new entertainment show on broadcast television and I urge you to watch. Be sure to make a reservation for Monday nights 10:P.M. on ABC beginning June 17 for Grand Hotel, you will not be disappointed with this summer vacation and you will become hooked.

I hope Grand Hotel becomes a popular rating winner and audience favorite with its 12 episode summer run and goes on to more episodes and a permanent network timeslot for a second season run and beyond. They don’t come any better than this.

The post ABC’s Deliciously Addicting New TV Series, “Grand Hotel” first appeared on .

ABC Studios teams up with Eva Longoria, who executive produces a new drama Series, Grand Hotel, that is a bold and provocative drama set at the last family-owned hotel in multicultural Miami Beach. And, if the trailer teaser is any indication, Grand Hotel promises to be a few degrees more than just sexy and scandalous!

Charismatic Santiago Mendoza (Academy Award nominee Demián Bichir) owns the hotel, while his glamorous second wife Gigi (Roselyn Sanchez), and their adult children enjoy the spoils of success. The hotel’s loyal staff round out a contemporary, fresh take on an upstairs/downstairs story. Wealthy and beautiful guests bask in luxury, but scandals, escalating debt, and explosive secrets hide beneath the picture perfect exterior.
