Emilia Perez director Jacques Audiard awarded the Vanguard Award Ahead of the Golden Globes

The Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF), a cornerstone event closing out the 2024 film festival circuit, has set the stage for what is shaping up to be an exciting 2025 awards season. Among the standout contenders is Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, which has captured attention with its daring storytelling, stellar performances, and a narrative that resonates deeply with audiences and critics alike. After a strong showing at Palm Springs, the film is already being touted as a potential awards-season juggernaut.

This past Friday, Emilia Pérez director Jacques Audiard was honored with the prestigious Vanguard Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. The award was presented by to him by the film’s three leading stars—Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, and Zoe Saldaña. This recognition, arriving just days before the 82nd Golden Globes airing today, Sunday, January 5, 2025, has amplified excitement around Emilia Pérez and its prospects for awards season glory.

The post Latinos Stand Out Among Golden Globe Nominees first appeared on .

More than a dozen Latino stars and Latino-related TV and film projects are among the candidates for the 2022 Golden Globe Awards, including actors Javier Bardem, Anthony Ramos and Rachel Zegler and movies like tick, tick…BOOM!, West Side Story, Being the Ricardos and Madres Paralelas.

Netflix’s tick, tick…BOOM! and 20th Century Fox’s West Side Story, directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Steven Spielberg, respectively, vie for the honor in two categories, Best Picture Drama and Best Picture-Musical/Comedy. tick, tick…BOOM!, a semi-biographical musical drama about a relatively young promising theater composer navigating romance, friendship and life’s challenges in New York City, marked the directorial debut of Miranda, the creator of the acclaimed stage musical Hamilton.

On the other hand, Spielberg’s new version of West Side Story features a sizable Latino cast portraying the musical film’s Puerto Rican characters–a welcome correction of the original 1961 movie. In fact, the 2021 film female lead, Zegler in the role of Maria, is also nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Actress-Motion Picture-Musical/Comedy category. A newcomer to Hollywood, Zegler competes against established stars Marion Cotillard (Annette), Jennifer Lawrence (Don’t Look Up) and Emma Stone (Cruella) and the also newcomer Alana Haim (Licorice Pizza).

In both the Best Picture Drama and Best Picture-Musical/Comedy categories, tick, tick…BOOM! and West Side Story face Cyrano, Don’t Look Up and Licorice Pizza.

Spanish actor Bardem is among the five candidates vying for the award for Best Actor-Motion Picture Drama for his role in the Amazon Original Movie Being the Ricardos, the Aaron Sorkin drama about the Hollywood power couple Dezi Arnaz and Lucille Ball. Bardem, a Golden Globe and Oscar winner, faces Mahershala Ali (Swan Song), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog), Will Smith (King Richard) and Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth). As a side note, Being the Ricardos also won Sorkin a nod for Best Screenplay-Motion Picture and a nom for Nicole Kidman for Best Actress-Motion Picture for her lead as Ball.

With Latinos shining in two film adaptations of Broadway musicals, it isn’t surprising to see other Latinos competing in additional Golden Globe categories.

Ramos is a nominee for In the Heights in Best Actor-Motion Picture-Musical/Comedy. Set in New York’s largely Dominican community of Washington Heights, the musical is written by Quiara Alegría Hudes and Miranda and directed by Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians). Ramos’s competition includes Leonardo DiCaprio (Don’t Look Up), Peter Dinklage (Cyrano), Andrew Garfield (tick, tick…BOOM!), and Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza).

For her part, Ariana DeBose is a candidate in Best Supporting Actress-Motion Picture for her role of Anita in West Side Story–that’s the role played by Rita Moreno in the 1961 musical feature that won her both a Golden Globe and an Oscar. The other candidates in DeBose’s category are Caitriona Balfe (Belfast), Kirsten Dunst (The Power of the Dog), Aunjanue Ellis (King Richard) and Ruth Negga (Passing).

Another two Latino actors vying for Golden Globes are Oscar Issac and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez.

Encanto (Credit: Disney)

Issac is nominated for Best Actor-Television Motion Picture for his role in HBO Max’s Scenes From a Marriage while Rodriguez got a nod for Best Television Actress-Drama Series for her role in FX’s Pose.

Two films with Latino connections compete in the Best Picture-Animated category. Disney’s Encanto is set in a fantastical Colombia and stars Stephanie Beatriz, María Cecilia Botero and John Leguizamo. The movie is directed by Jared Bush, Byron Howard and Charise Castro Smith, all of whom also share writing credits. The other film, Raya and the Last Dragon, is helmed by Mexican director Carlos López Estrada along with Don Hall and Paul Briggs.

In the category of Best Picture-Non-English Language, the Spanish film Madres Paralelas by Pedro Almodóvar faces Compartment No. 6, a co-production of Germany, Russia and Finland; Drive My Car from Japan; The Hand of God, from Italy; and A Hero, a co-production of Iran and France. This is Almodóvar’s 11th Golden Globe nomination, winning on two occasions–for Pain and Glory in 2019 and All About My Mother in 1999.

Both Encanto and Madres Paralelas also earned a nomination for their respective film composers, Texas’ Germaine Franco and Spain’s Alberto Iglesias. Additionally, Encanto’s theme song “Dos Oruguitas” got a nod for Best Song Motion Picture. “Dos Oruguitas” is written by Miranda and performed by Colombian singer Sebastián Yatra.

The Golden Globes are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The 79th awards ceremony will be held Jan. 9.

Bel Hernandez

From independent producer to Senior Vice-President and Head of Latinx Content at Confluential Films, Joel M. Gonzales is making the jump to “executive”, stepping into a new phase of producing content that makes room for stories of underrepresented filmmakers in Hollywood.

As the newest member of the team, Gonzales will work closely with Confluential Films’ founder Tommy Oliver, Executive Vice President Mel Jones, and Head of Development Jonny Paterson to find authentic, inclusive stories that share the human experience.

“Latinx content is a major priority for our company and having someone as talented as Joel at the helm will only supercharge our efforts to deliver authentic, entertaining, and moving content,” said Oliver on Gonzales joining the team.

Growing up in Watts, now known as South Central Los Angeles, Gonzalez remembers he originally wanted to be an actor. However, his priorities changed when he became a father and married shortly after graduating high school. When he was finally able to refocus on producing, he attended the Los Angeles City College Film Program while juggling two jobs to provide for his family. That’s when Gonzales realized that what he wanted to be was a producer.

For 12 years he has worked as an independent producer through his own production company Action Faith Media. His first film Followed Home, a horror film which he produced for $2,000 is still available as a digital download. “I knew it had a marketable appeal. I still collect a residual check every quarter for the film,” Gonzales recalls.

Joel is also a respected advocate for Latino diversity in the entertainment industry. For the last ten years has served as President of Nosotros, the oldest Latinx arts advocacy non-profit founded by the iconic Ricardo Montalbán in 1970.

As Gonzales embarks on his new position at Confluential Films, Latin Heat wanted to know how his life has shifted, what fuels him, and how his new role might benefit Latino independent filmmakers move their projects forward.

Once you realized producing was your calling, how did you break into the industry?

My first job in pursuing my career as a producer was at Summit Entertainment as an executive assistant to the business and legal affairs executive, Trellis Hann, who took me under her wing and showed me the ins and outs of international sales and distribution. During my time there, I participated in the sale and distribution of movies such as The Blair Witch Project, American Pie, and Momento. From there, I moved to E! Entertainment in their rights and clearances department, working on the earlier version of E! News. From E! News, I grew into a position with their international distribution department. Again taking full advantage of the access, learning the ins and outs of international distribution for television. Soon after, I began producing short films with fellow filmmakers. One of my most successful short films was The Becoming, a sci-fi thriller.

From that experience, I moved to Paley Center For Media in Beverly Hills as an associate programming director. While there, I participated in the famous Paley TV Fest and learned the ins and outs of nonprofits and fundraising. I was approached in 2009 to join the board of Nosotros in hopes that I could bring some of my experience to develop programs for Nosotros. Shortly after joining, I was asked to step in as president to help with the organization’s redeveloping.

Gonzalez at The Golden Eagle Awards (Photo: Self)

Before I knew it, more people brought their unique skills in to help. That wonderful group included Fanny Veliz, Reko Moreno, Natalia Ochoa, J.M. Longoria, Mariana Anaya, Natasha Galano, truly dedicated young people wanting to belong to something that meant something. I spent most of my time rebuilding Nosotros and building my career as a producer, [producing] over 16 independent films and working for Sony Latin on some of their highest ranking and award-nominated music videos.

I mention all of the above to answer the simple question. My Education? Still, to date, I don’t have any formal college education. I took every job and every opportunity, and I leveraged it forward.

How did you connect with Confluential Films?

I was asked to produce a project that Confluential was partnering on with Mucho Mas Media. My good friend Javier Chapa recommended me.

During my short time there during pre-production, I got to know Tommy Oliver and Mel Jones very well. I made it a point to keep in touch with Tommy, as I was very impressed with what he was able to accomplish and the goals and mandate he set for Confluential Films.

During Sundance 2020, representing Nosotros, I reconnected with Tommy and his team at the Latinx House. I put the bug in Tommy’s ear about him having a Latinx division at Confluential Film, and that I would be happy to suggest writers, directors, and other filmmakers to him.

From time to time, Confluential Films would hire me to create a budget or work with them independently to some degree. In November, I was asked by Tommy to be the line producer on his next documentary for HBO. Again I took the opportunity to remind him of my suggestion. But unbeknownst to me, Tommy had other plans, he took me by surprise and asked if I would be willing to join Confluential Films as the head of that division. I gratefully accepted his offer, and here we are.

What is the mandate of your position as the SVP and Head of Latinx Content at Confluential Films?

One of the main things I humbly asked Tommy for in my position, was that I could have the ability to give opportunities to strong Latinx voices, which he agreed was important. My mandate is simple and is the one that Tommy has instilled in everyone at Confluential Films — to deliver authentic, entertaining, and moving content.

How does a filmmaker submit their work for consideration?

At Confluential Films, we all work together in the development process led by Tommy. I am personally taking submissions, from features, docs, to scripted and unscripted content from Latinx Filmmakers (or otherwise). I can be emailed directly, but all that I ask is that you come with your A-game and be prepared for honest feedback, and it has to have something to say in a unique and engaging way.

Is there a specific genre of films are you looking to produce?

We are open to every genre, film, television, scripted, unscripted, and documentaries. The main ingredient that the project must have something profound to say.

Do you believe Latino talent and creatives are finally being hired in parity with the African American entertainment community?

I can only speak from my own experience. I have often found that we, as Latinos, often put ourselves in a box. I do believe there is still a lot of work to be done. I see that a lot of the networks (sometimes reluctantly) create diversity programs but often still put the Latino experience as an afterthought. We do have to speak up and forcefully make sure our voices are heard. But the only way that we’re going to do that is by doing the work. Quality work that we can stand on.

Any final thoughts, advice you would like to share for Latinos in Hollywood?

If anything, I would reiterate that we will stop being stereotyped when we stop stereotyping ourselves. The Latino experience is not one layer. It’s a multitude of layers from the Mexican experience to the Puerto Rican experience to the Central American experience.

I’m just someone who stayed focused on his dream. Knowing that every bump in the road, every letdown, every disappointment, and yes, every occasional success has led me to where I am now. My journey is far from over. First and foremost, I put my faith in God, and I strive to be a blessing to all those I encounter. Be willing to share. Be willing to be humbled. Be willing to serve. Be willing to work hard for your dreams no matter what.

Taylor-Joy stands out as one of two actresses with double nominations of the prestigious Golden Globes this year.

The 24-year-old actress of Argentine descent competes in the best actress in a comedy feature category for her leading role in Emma, where she faces off against Oscar-nominated and past Golden Globe winners Michelle Pfeiffer (French Exit) and Kate Hudson (Music).

Taylor-Joy is also nominated for best actress for the limited television series The Queen’s Gambit, facing off against Cate Blanchett (Mrs. America) and Nicole Kidman (The Undoing), both multiple Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning stars.

Taylor-Joy is a first-time nominee for a Golden Globe.

However, the drama about an orphaned, chess prodigy is not the only Latino-led episodic competing this year for the coveted award from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Disney’s The Mandalorian, starring Chilean-born actor Pedro Pascal, is also nominated for best television drama series. The sci-fi western episodic from the Star Wars universe competes against The Crown, Lovecraft Country, Ozark, and Ratched.

Hamilton, the film that captured the live performance of the acclaimed Broadway musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda featuring the original cast, also received two nominations, for best musical or comedy motion picture. The feature about America’s Founding Father Alexander Hamilton competes against Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Music, Palm Springs, and The Prom. Miranda, who stars in the film, is also a contender for best actor, along with Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm), James Corden (The Prom), Dev Patel (The Personal History of David Copperfield), and Andy Samberg (Palm Springs).

This will be Miranda’s third Golden Globes nomination. His first two nominations were for best original song for the animated series Moana and later for his acting in Mary Poppins Returns.

In the foreign language film category, the Spanish-language horror flick La Llorona from Guatemala competes against Denmark’s Another Round, Italy’s The Life Ahead, France’s Two of Us, and U.S.A.’s Korean-language dramedy Minari.

The 78th edition of the Golden Globes will take place on Feb. 28 and air on NBC. Hosting the awards will be comedic actresses Tina Fey (30 Rock) and Amy Poehler (Inside Out) repeating that feat for the fourth time. Fey will be live from New York, and Poehler will be live from Beverly Hills. Nominees will join in live from various locations around the world.
