Samuel Douek, the founder and director of HMFF, expressed his excitement for the film festival’s celebration.“After 17 years of Hola Mexico, we feel like we’re just getting started! It’s a joy to work with talented filmmakers to showcase their stories on the big screen. In the current political climate, highlighting the achievements of Mexicans and Latinos is crucial. Immigrants like Iñárritu, Cuarón, and Del Toro show what success looks like! In 2025, we will present an exciting lineup of films that resonate deeply with audiences. We’re thankful to Toyota for their support, which helps amplify our voices. I look forward to seeing everyone at the theaters!”

Each year, the festival takes part in this tradition of the festival poster and prides itself on working with Mexico’s most sought-after graphic designers to create unique and collectible poster art. This year’s poster was designed by Ely Ely.

Ely is a talented illustrator with over 10 years of experience in advertising, editorial, and mural work. Inspired by nature, personal introspection, and Mexico’s vibrant colors, she has collaborated with national and international brands. The design suggests a fantastical figure that represents cinema: a doorway to other worlds. Wrapped in textures that resemble Mexican textiles, this character evokes feelings of wonder, strangeness, and the opportunity to inhabit imagined realities.

Opens at The Montalban Theater May 31st

Los Angeles, CA – The 11th edition of Hola Mexico Film Festival will open with the Los Angeles premiere of The Good Girls (Las Ninas Bien). The film, directed by Alejandra Márquez Abella, is a satirical critique of Mexico’s bourgeoisie class. Inspired by María Guadalupe Loaeza’s book by the same name, the film stars Ilse Salas, Flavio Medina, Cassandra Ciangherotti, and Paulina Gaitan and is produced by Gabriela Maire and Rodrigo S. González. Filmed by Dariela Ludlow, the opening night screening will take place on Friday, May 31, 2019 at the Montalbán Theatre in Hollywood.

“We are thrilled to open the festival with The Good Girls. Márquez Abella presents us with an almost anthropological critique of Mexico’s social class and the role women played at the time but filmed with a touch of satirical genius as well,” said Samuel Douek, director of Hola Mexico Film Festival.

This year’s festival’s key art designed by Mexico City based muralist, Jesús Benitez, represents all phases of Mexican culture, from the iconic image of the Mayan Jaguar to the quintessential masked luchador to the unforgettable “calaverita” of Day of the Dead. “It was very important for us to reflect the diversity and exuberance of Mexican culture in the design so as to mirror the richness and variety of our cinema,” explains Douek.

Hola Mexico Film Festival takes place May 31 – June 8, 2019 in Los Angeles. Screenings, Galas and other events will be held at the Montalbán Theatre, Regal Cinemas LA Live and LA Plaza De Cultura Y Artes. The full festival lineup and schedule of events will be unveiled in late April. Early bird specials for Opening Night screening and exclusive VIP Opening Night Packages are now available on www.holamexicoff.com.

The Good Girls (Las Ninas Bien) looks at the extravagant luxury that surrounds Sofía de Garay (Ilse Salas) who lives in a dreamlike cloud of opulence in 1980s Mexico City. Her days are filled with lavish soirees, designer dresses, country-club tennis matches, and all the pleasures reserved for the upper crust. In this world, appearances are everything and friendships are only as strong as your financial status.

Hola Mexico Film Festival, was founded in 2008 and is the largest Mexican Film Festival outside of Mexico, strives to highlight the best and brightest talents in Mexican cinematography.
