Bilingual series stars and is executive produced by award-winning actor Eugenio Derbez

Fan favorite , Acapulco returns for season three with the first two episodes debuting globally on Wednesday, May 1, followed by new episodes every Wednesday through June 26.

Fans on Reddit agree that Acapulco is a fav of theirs and even have some advice to other streamers. Jonathan Oberg commented “I’m all in. One of the best shows on any streamer. Apple needs to avoid the Netflix trap of canceling shows too soon.”

The Apple TV+ teases season three with a new trailer that gives us a peek to what we will see in the global popular, bilingual hit comedy series starring and executive produced by Emmy and SAG-Award winner Eugenio Derbez.

This new season Acapulco brings the reconciliation of past mistakes and exciting new beginnings. The older Máximo (Derbez) finds himself returning to Las Colinas a place he no longer recognizes. While in 1985, younger Máximo (Enrique Arrizon) continues his climb up the ladder of success while potentially jeopardizing all the relationships he’s worked so hard to build.

Returning to Acapulco is the winning ensemble cast which includes Fernando Carsa, Damián Alcázar, Camila Perez, Vanessa Bauche, Regina Reynoso, Raphael Alejandro, Jessica Collins, Rafael Cebrián, Regina Orozco, and Carlos Corona with recurring guest stars Jaime Camil (Schmigadoon) and Cristo Fernandez (Ted Lasso) joining the cast in season three.

Acapulco the series is produced for Apple by Lionsgate Television, 3Pas Studios, Zihuatanejo Productions and The Tannenbaum Company. The inspiration for the show was the box office hit How to Be A Latin Lover produced by 3Pas Studios and Pantelion Films’, in which Derbez played “Maximo” a kid with humble beginnings who grows up searching for the wealthiest women to marry. The series is executive produced by Derbez alongside Ben Odell and is created by Austin Winsberg, Eduardo Cisneros and Jason Shuman.

One of the most streamed, binge-watched TV series on Netflix By Catherine Jones I don’t want to admit

The post The Telenovela You Must Watch..or Re-Watch first appeared on .

One of the most streamed, binge-watched TV series on Netflix

By Catherine Jones

I don’t want to admit this (especially publicly here on this platform), but I did not watch the romantic comedy series Jane the Virgin during its successful run on the CW network from 2014 to 2019. Not one episode. Yep, as a self-proclaimed Latina “girl power” kinda feminist and a long-time journalist covering the U.S. Latinx community, I didn’t watch a show loosely based on a popular Venezuelan telenovela called Juana la Virgen. And I’ve loved telenovelas since I grew up watching them with my abuelita in Miami, Fla.

Sure, It was my day job (and it’s also my passion) to highlight Latinos/as doing amazing things in the U.S. Latino community. But, again, I somehow missed the boat on watching Jane the Virgin in primetime.

Why am I making this confession now (as disturbing as it may be)? Because I’ve seen the errors of my way! I now get it. I see why the show was No. 1 during its debut. I understand why it’s currently one of the most streamed, binge-watched TV series on Netflix. And I understand why my tween and teen daughters love watching it as much as I loved watching telenovelas with Abuelita back in the day.

It’s pure genius – a modern-day masterpiece of storytelling (and I was an English literature major in college, so I know not to make declarative statements like these if I can’t back them up).

Created by Jennie Snyder Urman, the show’s premise revolves around Jane Villanueva, a 20-something-year-old Latina who becomes accidentally artificially inseminated and ends up pregnant, despite having never been sexually active.

And then the true telenovela unravels from there, following Jane’s journey as she navigates the challenges of her unexpected pregnancy, her relationships (including a unique one with her baby daddy Rafael Solano, played by the handsome Justin Baldoni), family dynamics (with her Abuela and single mom, played by Ivonne Coll Mendoza and Andrea Navedo, respectively), and her pursuit of her career aspirations (which included trying to become a telenovela writer and romance author).

I knew that Jane the Virgin was a dramedy, with over 1 million viewers per episode, but no one told me, as I’m now sharing with you, how darn witty it is. Even the website Rotten Tomatoes, known for rating TV shows and movies, gave the series 100% Rotten Tomatoes, a top honor not accomplished by many.

From the show’s narrator breaking the fourth wall to guide us viewers through Jane’s life, to the use of social media hashtags, to addressing contemporary dilemmas like an accidental sex tape, Jane the Virgin is as hip and relevant today as, say, ABC’s Modern Family. Or as any episode of NBC’s The Office. Yeah, it’s that good.

The fact that the cast is diverse, with Puerto Rican actress Gina Rodriguez in the lead, is just the cherry on top. And its use of Spanish and English, and Spanglish? That’s just gravy for anyone who loves the exploration of cultural and social themes in the U.S. Latino community.

To those of you looking to relive younger years of telenovela watching at home, but with a new generation and an updated twist, I’d like to recommend watching Jane the Virgin on Netflix, y pronto. Plus, according to a recent OK! Magazine interview with Jaime Camil – who played Jane’s Telenovela star father, Rogelio de la Vega, there may be a Jane the Virgin reunion with 10 new episodes. What!?

So, don’t be like me and miss out on the fun this time around. Your future self may never forgive you for missing the boat … along with all of the new family bonding that comes with watching a great telenovela.

Jacob Vargas and Jaime Camil will appear in the upcoming thriller Kimi, a thriller directed by Academy Award-winner Steven Soderbergh that is set in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic in Los Angeles.

Penned by David Koepp, whose writing credits include Jurassic Park, Carlito’s Way and Spider-Man, the feature centers on an agoraphobic tech worker Angela Childs (Zoë Kravitz) who discovers evidence of a crime during her routine revision of sound files while working from home. After reporting to her superiors but failing to convince them to take immediate action, Angela feels forced to step out into a world of chaos as L.A. faces protest against a city ordinance that limits the movement of homeless people in an effort to contain the deadly pandemic. But in order to complete her mission, Angela must face her fear of the outdoors.

Mexican-born actors Vargas and Camil co-star alongside Kravitz and Rita Wilson, who plays Angela’s boss. Other cast members include India de Beaufort, Emily Kuroda, Byron Bowers, Derek DelGaudio, Erika Christensen, Devin Ratray, Andy Daly, Robin Givens and Charles Halford.

Steven Soderbergh (Photo: Nicolas Genin/Wikipedia)

This is not the first time that Vargas works with Soderbergh. A native of the Mexican state of Michoacán and raised in the L.A. community of Pacoima, Vargas was featured in Traffic, the acclaimed 2000 feature about Mexico’s drug wars that won four Oscars, including one for Benicio del Toro. In the film, Vargas played the partner of Del Toro’s character.

Vargas would join Soderbergh once again two decades later in Mosaic, the 2017 HBO crime series based on the murder of Olivia Lake, a popular children’s book author and illustrator.
Vargas’ introduction to acting was a role as a breakdancer in the popular TV show Diff’rent Strokes in 1978, which led him to pursue acting. He appeared in the films Mi Vida Loca and My Family, in 1993 and 1995, respectively.

Vargas went on to star in the features Selena, Get Shorty, American Me and Next Friday. His most recent credits include FX’s crime thriller series Mayans MC and Netflix’s comedy series Mr. Iglesias.

For Camil, this will be his first collaboration with Soderbergh. He is best known playing Fernando Mendiola in the Mexican telenovela La Fea Más Bella, Mexico’s version of Ugly Betty, and Rogelio de la Vega in CW series Jane the Virgin, which earned him two Teen Choice Awards, one Imagen Award and two nominations for the Critics’ Choice Television Award.

Staff Writer

Los Angeles – The Imagen Foundation President Helen Hernandez today announced 114 nominees in 20 categories for this year’s 35th Annual Imagen Awards. The award show has expanded by adding three new categories: Best Director in Television, Best Music Composition for Film and Television and Best Music Supervision for Film and Television. The Imagen Awards will be presented virtually Thursday, September 24th, at 5 PM.

“This year’s list of nominees is a far cry from four honorees 35 years ago,” said Hernandez. “The level of creativity and talent in our community is bountiful and is exemplified in this year’s list. The judges were challenged with the overwhelming increase of quality submissions for consideration. It’s clear that we are making some strides, but have a way to go to achieve significant equity and inclusion in the industry. Until then, Imagen is committed to be the means to elevate and profile Latino talent in front of and behind the camera. Congratulations to this year’s nominees.”

The many years of continuous effort to spotlight and celebrate diversity in the entertainment industry has positioned the Foundation as a leader in distinguishing actors, studios, executives, and many more for their exceptional performances and achievements in film and television.

The Imagen Awards program was established in 1985 from a suggestion by veteran television producer Norman Lear to encourage and recognize the positive portrayals of Latinos in the media. The Foundation expanded its programs and initiatives to further its mission to serve as a bridge between the Latino community and the entertainment industry in providing access, education and resources for Latinos in the industry, as well as those seeking careers in entertainment.

Jaime Camil Returns to The Sitcom Circuit

Premieres Thursday, April 2 (9:30-10:00 PM, ET/PT)

By Justina Bonilla

The newest CBS multi-camera sitcom Broke, features Jaime Camil as its leading man. Adding to its diverse primetime lineup, the majority of the main cast is Latino.

Single mother Jackie (Pauley Perrette), works two jobs to raise her son Sammy (Antonio Raul Corbo), while living on a tight budget. Out of the blue, her estranged and very wealthy sister Elizabeth (Natasha Leggero), Elizabeth’s husband Javier (Jaime Camil), and Javier’s assistant Luis (Izzy Diaz) visit. When Elizabeth confesses to Jackie, they are flat broke, Jackie reluctantly lets them stay with her until they can get back on their feet. Forcing the sisters to set aside their differences and reconnect as a family. Reminding them just how much they all need one another.

Camil, before becoming popular among American audiences in Jane the Virgin as Rogelio De La Vega, his entertainment career began in Mexican radio, in the early 1990’s. Later, between 1999 and 2002, he released two albums as a singer. At this time, Camil also started his career in acting in Mexican telenovelas, most notably Mi Destino Eres Tú (You are my Destiny), La Fea Más Bella (The Prettiest Ugly Girl) and Qué Pobres tan Ricos (How Poor the Rich). As well as performing in live musicals on Broadway and in Mexico. Since Jane the Virgin, Camil continues to act and has become very active as a voice character for a variety of animated shows and films, including the Disney properties Coco, Elena of Avalor, The Lion Guard, and DuckTales.

Jaime Camil and Natasha Leggero as Javier and Elizabeth Photo: Greg Gayne/CBS

The character of Javier is portrayed as a well-educated, positive and a loving family man. Challenging the traditional Latino male media stereotypes (criminal, violent, domineering, lazy, womanizing, etc.). Javier’s biggest challenge is attempting to make a life outside of his wealthy and sheltered upbringing. To prove to his wealthy family, he can be financially responsible.

A unique aspect of Broke is the use of Spanish. While English is the primary language of the show, Spanish is sprinkled throughout the show, especially in conversations between Javier and Luis. Further defining their cultural bond and close friendship. Also, the use of subtitles helps the Spanish become more accessible to the audience, especially those of us with limited Spanish skills.

Broke is based on the Colombian telenovela Pobres Rico (Poor Rich People). Coincidentally, in the Mexican version of Pobres Rico, Qué Pobres tan Ricos, Camil starred as the main character, the rich man who turned poor.

Alex Herschlag, the creator of Broke, is a seasoned comedy television producer and writer, most notably for Will & Grace and Modern Family. Victor Gonzales, the show’s director, has an impressive resume working as a director on multiple contemporary sitcoms, including multiple Latino oriented sitcoms, such as George Lopez, Wizards of Waverly Place, Cristela, One Day at a Time, and Mr. Iglesias.

Overall, Broke is a warm-hearted family-based comedy. A breath fresh air in a time of tremendous stress and isolation, reminding us all how important family unity is, especially in a time of crisis. Broke premieres on CBS, Thursday, April 2 at 9:30/8:30c.

The post Family Unity Drives CBS’ Newest Sitcom “Broke” first appeared on .

By Luis Reyes

With diversity and inclusion now on the radar of broadcast television network executives, advertisers and viewing audiences, programming that is reflective of American society seems to be what broadcast TV executives had in mind when ordering their 2019/20 pilots for this season.

With the success of shows like the CW’s Jane the Virgin, NBC’s Superstore (America Ferrera), and integrating of Latino leads in shows like FOX’s (Now on NBC) Brooklyn Nine Nine (Stephanie Beatriz and Melissa Fumero), the word is out that hiring Latinos is good for business.

In addition, the casting of Latino actors in non-traditional roles, as fully developed characters that are part of the American scene, is an idea that has been a long time in coming and is reflected well in the following pilots.

This pilot season Latino actors are snagging more lead roles in more high profile pilots and TV Show spin-offs.

Smits Returns Leads in NBC’s Bluff City Law

Emmy award-winning actor Jimmy Smits returns to series television starring as Memphis lawyer Elijah Strait who along with his daughter Sydney Keller (Caitlin McGee) specializes in civil rights cases in the NBC one hour legal drama pilot Bluff City Law.

Michael Aguilar serves as Executive producer of Bay City Law along with creator and executive producer Dean Georgans and David Janollari.

Smits whose TV career was launched when he starred for as Victor Sifuentes on LA Law has had an impressive television career with other TV show including NYPD Blue and The West Wing, where he played Matthew Vincente Santos, the first Latino to become president of the U.S. His film roles include Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.

Smits is repped by Sarah Clossey at the United Talent Agency

The “Virgin” Lives On At the CW

Jacqueline Grace Lopez (East Los High) has been cast as the lead of the new CW’s Jane The Virgin spinoff pilot show entitled Jane the Novela written by Valentina Garza and to be directed by Brad Silberling. The one-hour anthology series will be executive produced by Jane The Virgin creator Jennie Snyder Urman, Ben Silverman and Gina Rodriguez.

Continuing the “telenovela” them Jane the Novela each season will be based on a different “novela” written by Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez’s character in Jane the Virgin)

The pilot episode of Jane the Novela takes place in the Napa Valley where Jane (Lopez), following in the “novela” tradition is a young twenty-something who is torn between her boyfriend and a handsome rich guy.

Lopez honed her acting chops on Hulu’s East Los High, a web series created by Carlos Portugal which gave much of the young Latino talent you see now booking leads roles, their first opportunity. Lopez is repped by Kevin Turner at Daniel Hoff Agency, Matt Rosen at SGSBC, and Commercial Talent Agency.

Jane the Virgin Spinoff for Jaime Camil

CBS has added a late pilot order for the multi-camera comedy which will star and be executive produced by actor Jaime Camil who is currently seen as Rogelio in the CW’s Jane the Virgin. Alex Herschlag (Will & Grace), is the writer

The comedy series will revolve around a wealthy trust-fund couple whose money pipeline is cut off by the father. The couple is then relegated to living with an estranged sister in her condo in Reseda, California.

Camil is represented by Christine Holder of Zero Gravity Management.

E.J. Bonilla Leads in Until The Wedding

E. J. Bonilla, who played the wisecracking Detective Danny Padilla on the final season of A&E’s Unforgettable is set as the male lead opposite Olivia Thrilby in ABC’s Until The Wedding, a one hour romantic drama pilot based on an Israeli TV show format. Until The Wedding will explore the intimate relationships of a group of friends and family as Adrienne (Thrilby) and Danny (Bonilla) are forced to reckon with their own romantic lives and careers. Becky Mode wrote the pilot and producers are Sarah Timberman Carl Beverly and Alon Aranya. Bonilla will be seen in the upcoming New Line / DC/Vertigo crime comic series film, The Kitchen with Melissa McCarthy.

Bonilla is repped by Jaime Misher at Innovative Artist

Velez Back on New York Undercover

Luna Lauren Velez will reprise her role as Detective Nina Moreno in a new ABC reboot pilot of the Dick Wolf’s original 1990’s New York cop drama series New York Undercover where she starred alongside Michael de Lorenzo and Malik Yorba. New York Undercover broke new ground in the 90’s as the first police drama on U.S. television to feature two American Latinos and an African-American in starring roles. Wolf serves as producer along with Universal TV and ABC Studios.

Velez’s most recently voiced the role of Miles Morales’s mother in the Oscar winning animated feature, Spider Man: Into The Spider Verse. Velez has extensive film and television including seven seasons on Showtime’s hit show Dexter.

Velez is repped by Estelle Lasher of the Lasher Group out of New York

Gomez & Vidal on ABC’s The Baker and The Beauty

Carlos Gomez (Law & Order: True Crime The Menendez Murders) and Lisa Vidal (Being Mary Jane) will join Dan Bucatinsky (Second Act) as series regulars in the ABC comedy pilot The Baker and The Beauty. Set in Miami, the romantic comedy is the story of a young Cuban-American baker Danny Garcia (Bucatinsky), who falls in love with an international superstar. Gomez portrays the family patriarch and owner of the bakery along with his wife Mari played by Vidal and a young daughter played by newcomer Belissa Escobedo. The young actress is an alumnus of the ABC Discover Showcase that promotes diverse young talent. The series adaptation is from Dean Georgaris and Dave Frankel.

For all the new shows, there is the hurdle of being picked up for a full season. It is hoped that these television shows and their casts fill out the fall 2019 Network Broadcast schedules and make it as successful long running series.

The post Latinos Score Leading Roles In 2019 Pilot Season first appeared on .
