The much anticipated film Kiss of the Spider Woman starring Jennifer Lopez, Diego Luna and Tonatiuh will release on October 10, 2025. Four months out, Lionsgate has released the official trailer giving audiences a peek at the powerful performances,

Oscar®-winning director Bill Condon (Dreamgirls, Beauty and the Beast) returns to the musical genre with a dazzling, Technicolor reimagining of Kiss of the Spider Woman—a visually stunning and emotionally resonant adaptation of Manuel Puig’s groundbreaking 1976 novel and the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical by Terrence McNally, John Kander, and Fred Ebb (Cabaret, Chicago).

Set within the confines of a South American prison, the story follows Valentín (Luna), a political dissident, and Molina (Tonatiuh), a flamboyant window dresser jailed for indecency. As the two cellmates form a surprising bond, Molina escapes into vivid retellings of a glamorous Hollywood musical featuring his favorite screen diva, Ingrid Luna (Jennifer Lopez). Through fantasy and shared vulnerability, their connection deepens—blurring the line between illusion and survival.

Written and directed by Condon, the three film stars bring a lot of talent and recognition to the project. Emmy® nominee Luna (Andor, Y Tu Mamá También), rising star Tonatiuh (Carry On, Promised Land), and Lopez, the Emmy®, Grammy®, and Golden Globe-nominated icon (Hustlers, Out of Sight), who also executive produces alongside Luna.

Produced by Barry Josephson, p.g.a., Tom Kirdahy, p.g.a., and Greg Yolen, p.g.a., Kiss of the Spider Woman promises to be a sweeping cinematic experience where fantasy, passion, and resistance collide. Kiss of the Spider-Woman is an Artists Equity and Mohari Media presentation and a Josephson Entertainment, Tom Kirdahy, Greg Yolen and Nuyorican production. Executive producers include Bill Condon, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Mark Scheinberg, Dani Bernfeld, Kevin Halloran, Michael Joe, Mickey Liddell, Pete Shilaimon, Whitney Williams, Jennifer Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Courtney Baxter, Diego Luna, D. Matt Geller, Pamela Thur, Sam Weisman, Daniel Weisman and Margaux Weisman.

The post A Peek at The ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman” first appeared on .

Considered one of the most influential music video directors in urban culture, Terrero has created iconic videos for artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Nicky Jam, Enrique Iglesias, Daddy Yankee, Maluma, and Bad Bunny, amassing over 21 billion views collectively and putting Latino artists at the forefront of a global cultural movement. Terrero will be honored during the HPRA ¡BRAVO! Awards, which are set to take place at The Drake Hotel in Chicago, Illinois on October 12, 2023.

The President’s Award is hand-selected by HPRA’s President to recognize an individual whose contributions to Hispanic culture and representation, whether it be through industry leadership, civic service, or the arts, has left an indelible mark on the community. Terrero’s ability to bring to life Latino stories through music, film, and TV, and give them representation in the industry, has created a unique visual and narrative language that speaks to a wide audience, breaking down cultural barriers and promoting cross-cultural understanding.

“For the past 20 years, Jessy’s career and powerful storytelling have been emblematic of the resilience, grit, and determination that defines Latinos in this country, while also contributing to a positive sense of identity and pride for the community,” said HPRA President Sonia V. Diaz. “His commitment to shining a light on our culture and to giving opportunities to young talent in the arts is at the heart of what HPRA strives to achieve and we are proud to honor him with this recognition.”

Terrero made his debut as a film and TV director with Soul Plane, a film featuring Kevin Hart and Sofia Vergara, and later directed a series of features including Freelancers with Robert De Niro and Forest Whitaker, and Gun with Val Kilmer. In 2018, he created and directed the Netflix Original Nicky Jam: El Ganador, a biopic that focuses on the artist’s success and fame as well as his struggles with addiction. Most recently, Terrero was the executive producer on several documentaries in partnership with Amazon Music, such as Hip-Hop Por Siempre and La Cuna Del Dembow.

The 2023 HPRA National ¡BRAVO! Awards celebrate excellence in multicultural storytelling in public relations and marketing while advancing positive narratives about Latinos in the United States. This year’s ¡BRAVO! Awards theme, “The Future es Nuestro,” focuses on the country’s ongoing cultural shift and contributions of the Hispanic/Latino community. Each year, the 2023 National ¡BRAVO! Awards also recognize communications leaders who are selected for their pivotal work in shaping the industry and establishing progress for Hispanic and multicultural consumer segments in public relations, media, and communications.

At first glance, Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson don’t seem like a match made in Heaven. Let’s face it, a love affair between J-Lo and O-Wil is not going to make the cover of any supermarket tabloid.

Kat (Lopez) is a mega superstar who gets stood up during a worldwide telecast concert. In a moment of despair Kat spots an unsuspecting nerdy math teacher, Charlie (Owen Wilson), coaxes him on stage, and.…say it ain’t so, J-Lo!..marries him! It’s just a phony-baloney publicity stunt resulting from a heartbroken Kat being humiliated in front of the whole world, right?

It starts out that way, but slowly but surely these two “accidental” lovers begin to find common ground and begin to bond as humans. Lopez is especially good at shedding her diva persona in the story and revealing a softer more vulnerable side. Wilson has perfected his reliable “everyman” character with his uneven good looks that underscore and complement Lopez’s smoky, sexy charm.

Marry Me probably won’t win any Oscars. But there is some good music by J-Lo and Marry Me is a nice, cozy little date movie.

REVIEW

Will success spoil Maximo Gallardo? That’s the ultimate question underlying this funny, sparkling bi-lingual comedy set in gorgeous Acapulco, Mexico. Every episode begins with Old Maximo (Eugenio Derbez) telling his curious nephew, Hugo, (Raphael Alejandro) the story of how he acquired all his current fabulous wealth and property.

Acapulco begins when Young Maximo (Enrique Arizan) and his buddy, Memo (Fernando Carsa) land jobs at the ritzy Las Colimas Resort. Memo ends up working in the laundry room, while Maximo finds himself hobnobbing with the wealthy guests as a pool boy. Maximo is ambitious and aims to please his boss, Diane (Jessica Collins) with well-intended, but often mixed results.

Acapulco is a morality tale within a comedy. Every story contains a moral lesson Old Maximo learned as Young Maximo, such as dealing with the special needs and secrets of certain guests, competing with a workplace rival, handling a delicate personal romantic situation, coping with his mother’s disapproval for working in a “den of sin” resort.

The real joy and pleasure of Acapulco is watching the irrepressibly charming Arizan, as young Maximo, encounter, overcome and learn from each new challenge he faces. The writing in Acapulco is 14-carat gold. Each supporting cast performance is a gem that adds value to this priceless jewel of a comedy.

Will success spoil Maximo Gallardo? Acapulco has been picked up for a second season so Hugo and the rest of us will find out.

Progress is being made, but the list is still too short.

By Roberto Leal

In his book, “The Magic Lantern: An Autobiography,” legendary Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman described the experience of sitting in a dark theater and watching the images on a huge screen fly by at 24 frames per second as the closest thing we have created replicating the dream state. Cinema, in all its various forms, is the only art form that combines theater, literature, painting, dance, photography, sculpture and music all on one celluloid canvas. From the beginning, movies have been a source of inspiration, propaganda, social awareness, education and much, much entertainment.

The pandemic, the emergence of streaming platforms, giant screen TVs and in-home theaters have modified Bergman’s equations to include sitting in your recliner in the comfort of your living room in PJs in front of your 82” Samsung flat-screen TV. But the power of flickering images on a screen that tap into our collective unconscious where the stories of our shared myths and archetypes reside still holds true.

A FORT KNOX FOR FILMS

CHICANA, (1979), Director: Sylvia Morales

This 30-minute documentary was created by Morales when she was a film student at UCLA. Chicana chronicles the story of Mexican women from pre-Columbian times to the present. It’s a story of the Chicana’s struggles, pain, strength, endurance, contributions and ultimate triumph. Linda Gross of Los Angeles Times called Chicana “a well-researched and spirited documentary made with much love.”

SELENA, (1997), Director: Gregory Nava

This loving music biopic tribute about the tragically short career of the Queen of Tejano music, Selena Quintanilla, was also the breakthrough role for Latina superstar Jennifer Lopez. Mexican American director, Gregory Nava’s film El Norte is also on the registry; Selena is his second film to be added to the list. It won’t be his last. This film is credited with launching Lopez’s career but also the careers of half dozen other Latino actors including Jon Seda (La Brea, Chicago PD), Constance Marie (With Love, George Lopez) and Jacob Vargas (Mr. Iglesias)

REQUIEM 29, (1970), Director: David Garcia

In 1970 the Los Angeles Mexican-American/Chicano community, civic and academia leaders staged the Chicano Moratorium Movement, a massive protest against the Vietnam War. The police response to the protest was violent and deadly, resulting in the murder of noted Mexican writer for the Los Angeles Times, Ruben Salazar by the hands of agents from the Los Angeles County Sheriff. This newsreel-like documentary by David Garcia brings those historical events into stark, grainy, black and white reality.

NUMBERS DON’T LIE

Prior to the three new films being added to the National Film Registry, there were 18 Latino themed films or films starring a Latina/o in the lead listed on the Registry. They include:

1. Ben-Hur (Silent), 1925, Director: Fred Nobb

2. Drácula (Spanish), (1931). Director: Alfredo B. Cervana

13. Stand and Deliver, 1988, Director: Ramón Menéndez

16. The Pearl, 2001, Director: Alfredo Zacarías

17. Real Women Have Curves, 2002, Director: Patricia Cardoso

18. Fuentes Family Home Movies, 2017, Collection/Caroline Frick

Mathematically speaking the current National Film Registry list of Latino films is desperately lacking Latino representation. There are 825 films on the National Film Registry. With the addition of this year’s three new films, Latino films now total 21. Latinos make up 17 percent of the US population; seventeen percent of 825 is 140.25. With only 21 films reflecting Latino stories, there is a long way to go to reach parity.

In January of last year, the US Congressional Hispanic Caucus has been urging the Registry to consider more Latino films on the annual list of 25 nominations and nominated Selena to one of the films inducted to the National Film Registry.

In December of 2022 there will be a new group of films added to the Registry list. Here are three worthy candidates for the Registry’s consideration in 2022:

Bless Me Ultima, 2012, Director: Carl Franklin

This beautiful film adaptation of Rodolfo Anaya’s classic novel about set in New Mexico during WWII and the relationship between a young man and an elderly medicine woman who helps him contend with the battle between good and evil that rages in his village. Bless Me Ultima which is required reading in any Chicano Literature class should be required viewing by the selection committee of the National Film Registry

A bilingual indie film that went on to make $23.3 million internationally

Under the Same Moon, 2007, Director: Patricia Riggen

A young Mexican immigrant mother working in LA keeps in touch with her son back in Mexico. The lonely boy embarks on a dangerous, often funny and eventful journey from Mexico to LA to be with his mother. The film was one of the first bilingual stories, a U.S./Mexico coproduction. It starred Kate Del Castillo and Eugenio Derbez. With a budget of $1.7 million, it received international distribution and to date has made $23,313,049 worldwide.

The Three Burials of Melquiades, 2006, Director: Tommy Lee Jones

A Mexican ranch hand working near the Tex-Mex frontera is killed by a reckless Border Patrol agent. The ranch hand’s sympathetic American boss and friend fights to get justice for the Mexican and for a proper resting place for his burial. It stars Julio Cesar Cedillo as Melquiades and Melissa Leo and Tommy Lee Jones, who also directed.

THE 17 PERCENT SOLUTION

In order for the National Film Registry’s film selections to proportionately reflect the U.S. Latino population’s numbers, 119 Latino films need to be added. It’s a long trek, but with the increasingly growing number of films being produced, now is the time to begin the search for this year’s selection.

After a decade of staying away from romantic movies, Jennifer Lopez is coming back to the big screen with a love story in time for San Valentine’s. She stars in Marry Me, a romantic musical comedy-drama set for release Feb. 11.

Lopez plays famous Latin pop singer Kate Valdez, who surprisingly proposes to a stranger in one of her concerts. Originally, Kate was expected to pop the question to her music partner Sebastian, a popular singer portrayed by Colombian reggaeton artist Maluma, in a highly anticipated media event announced to the four winds and planned to stream live to millions of people as part of her Marry Me Concert Tour.

But after learning of her boyfriend’s cheating on the news just minutes before their carefully planned public engagement, a shocked and brokenhearted Kate proposes to a concertgoer holding a sign that said: “Marry me.” The stranger, a recently widowed single dad named Charlie, is played by Owen Wilson.

The film is directed by Kat Coiro, known for helming TV comedy series like Fox’s The Mick, FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and ABC’s Single Parents and comedy movies like Daddy Issues and A Case of You.

The screenplay is by John Rogers, Tami Sagher and Harper Dill, whose respective credits include Flightplan, Catwoman and Inside Amy Schumer. The script is based on a graphic novel by newcomer writer Bobby Crosby. Marry Me is executive produced by Lopez for her company Nuyorican Productions. The film’s 10-member producers team includes some that have worked with Lopez in previous movies, such as Hustlers’ Benny Medina and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Second Act’s Alex Brown.

The rest of the main cast is rounded up by Sarah Silverman (Wreck-It Ralph), Utkarsh Ambudkar (Brittany Runs a Marathon), Jimmy Fallon (The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon), John Bradley (Game of Thrones), Chloe Coleman (My Spy) and Brady Noon (The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers).

The last romcom starring Lopez was the 2010The Back-up Plan, about a woman who conceives twins through artificial insemination but then meets the man of her dreams on the very same day. The film won Lopez a nomination for the Teen Choice Awards.

An actress, singer and dancer, Lopez is considered one of the most influential Latino artists in the U.S. as well as one of the most powerful celebrities on the planet, making popular lists of influential magazines like Forbes and Time. She has reportedly sold about 70 million records and boasts a cumulative film gross of more than $3 billion. Her most notable films include Selena, Anaconda, The Cell, Shall We Dance, Monster-in-Law and Hustlers. Last year she received an Emmy nomination for her live performance along with Shakira in the Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show. And this year Lopez performed a musical mashup at the inauguration of President Joe Biden, incorporating some words in Spanish.

Along with Marry Me, the musical, JLo will also release a soundtrack that includes two duets with Maluma, “Pa’ Ti” and “Lonely.” The pair performed the songs at the 2020 American Music Awards last November. And in early December, Lopez dropped the video for her ballad “On my Way,” another track from the film. The soundtrack album is slated to debut in February, too.

Marry Me, the movie, is set to be released simultaneously in theaters by Universal Pictures and on the streamer Peacock.
