by Luis Reyes

Bluff City Law is a new one-hour legal drama starring Jimmy Smits about a father-daughter legal team that takes on cases involving injustice and civil rights matters. Elijah Straits, as played by Smits, is a complicated man; a widower and a crusading attorney who fights for those who can least defend themselves. He has an estranged relationship with his daughter Sydney (Caitlin McGee) but they respect each other’s courtroom abilities yet personally they are at odds. Elijah Strait isn’t necessarily a Latino character and Smits sports a mild southern accent for the role.

This is a return to the television legal drama genre that launched Smits on the acclaimed L.A. Law (1986-1992) in which he played young attorney Victor Sifuentes. He won television’s coveted Emmy award for the role. Smits’ television career spans more than three decades including such series as NYPD Blue, The West Wing, Dexter and Sons of Anarchy.

John Beifuss in his article for the Memphis Commercial Appeal recently described Smits as “a figure whose familiar presence invests any role with authority and the promise of a solid authentic performance.” Bluff City Law is filmed entirely on location in Memphis, Tennessee capturing the ambiance of its southern locale.

The executive producers are Michael Aguilar Dean Georgaris and David Janollan. Jessica Yu (Grey’s Anatomy) directed the first episode; Smits was surprised and proud to learn that one of the staff writers hired on Bluff City Law is a former recipient of a scholarship from the Hispanic Foundation for the Arts, an organization which he is one of the co-founders.

The veteran actor spent most of the summer largely in New York City and later for a short time commuting between filming locations, where he completed a role as businessman Kevin Rosario in Lin Manuel Miranda’s film version of his award-winning musical play In The Heights.

Bluff City Law begins its series run Monday, September 23, 2019, at 10:00 pm on NBC. Make sure to tune in.

In the film industry, Hollywood has a soft spot for actors who are famous or have enough charisma to be capable of guaranteeing a box-office success, simply by being in the movie — no matter if it’s a leading role or a cameo.

According to Blake Harris, a media consultant, “A bankable star has to meet one of 3 minimum requirements to any film package. The other two is being able to sign on a successful director and a script or a strong story idea.” The idea of a star in a film gives investors confidence that they will achieve a return on their investments by ensuring that the film is widely distributed and that at least some people will pay to see it, most especially during the film’s opening weekend.

The following are Latinx are part of the exclusive Bankable Star status:

Jennifer Lopez
Since the movie Selena catapulted Jennifer Lopez on a trajectory to superstardom, the multifaceted actress, singer, producer, business entrepreneur, has become a role model for millions of young girls and women all over the planet. Lopez will be starring next in Hustlers, a new movie about female strippers who turn the tables on their Wall Street clients. This fall, she is also starting production on a new romantic comedy Marry Me, starring opposite Owen Wilson and Maluma. Her most recent big-screen outing Second Act grossed over $72 million worldwide. On TV, Lopez starred for two seasons on the hit NBC-TV series Shades of Blue and produced the Freeform cable series The Fosters.

Eugenio Derbez
This Mexican born comedian, writer, director-producer, achieved enormous popularity on Mexican Television and brought his homegrown audience and expanded it across the border to the US. Derbez translated and transformed that popularity into theatrical film box-office success with his debut feature, Instructions Not Included which he co-wrote and directed. At $100 million dollars in box-office ticket sales, it became the highest-grossing Spanish language film ever released in the U. S.! This led to another hit comedy, How to Be a Latin Lover with Salma Hayek and Raquel Welch. Derbez’ most recent success was co-starring with Anna Faris in MGM’s/Lionsgate remake of the comedy Overboard that resulted in a $95 million worldwide box-office gross. Derbez now runs his own production company 3 Pas Studios and is currently seen in the family film Dora The Explorer and The Lost City of Gold in which he also serves as executive producer.

Salma Hayek
Her Oscar nomination as Best Actress for her powerful portrayal of the renown Mexican painter Frida Kahlo in the film Frida, which Hayek also produced, brought her new recognition as a dramatic actress after years as a reigning Latina sex symbol in such films as Desperado and From Dusk Till Dawn. She recently received critical acclaim for her bare-bones portrayal of Beatriz in the social satire Beatriz at Dinner, written and directed by Miguel Arteta. Hayek joins Angelina Jolie in Marvels’ 2020 production of The Eternals, and just wrapped the action-comedy The Hitman’s Wife Bodyguard with Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L.
Female Forward Celebrates Successful Inaugural Year with Seven Directors Helming Additional Episodes of NBC Shows

Emerging Director Program Marks 10-Year Anniversary as the Network’s First Pipeline Program for Ethnically Diverse Directors

NBC has ushered in the 2019-20 classes of its groundbreaking scripted directing initiatives, Female Forward and the Emerging Director Program. The initiatives aim to increase the representation of female and ethnically diverse directors, respectively, by creating a pipeline into scripted television. They are the only programs in the industry that give participating directors an in-season guarantee to direct at least one episode.

The new class of Female Forward directors and the NBC series they will helm are Kris Lefcoe (Superstore), Brenna Malloy (Chicago Fire), SJ Main Muñoz (Chicago Med), Kim Nguyen (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Sara Zandieh (Good Girls). The class for this year’s Emerging Director Program are Mahesh Pailoo (The Blacklist) and Dinh Thai (New Amsterdam).

Chosen from 500 applicants, the new classes are comprised of directors experienced in various mediums, including independent features, music videos, commercials and branded content. Their work includes award-winning films that have premiered, been official selections or won prizes at the Telluride Film Festival, SXSW, Tribeca Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, among others.

Female Forward is entering its second year after a successful inaugural year where seven directors from its first class were invited back to direct additional episodes of NBC shows. The Emerging Director Program, NBC’s first scripted directing program, is celebrating its 10-year anniversary and counts celebrated directors Kat Coiro, Hanelle Culpepper, Nisha Ganatra, Solvan “Slick” Naim and Sharat Raju amongst its alumni.

“Our scripted directing initiatives are proven changemakers in our industry. While celebrating this milestone year, we are so proud to continue building NBC’s legacy of making a meaningful impact in representation on television,” said Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta, Co-Presidents, Scripted Programming, NBC Entertainment.

“Female Forward and the Emerging Director Program have become the litmus test for successful and effective pipeline programs, and our new class of accomplished directors will continue to add to our rich heritage,” said Karen Horne, Senior Vice President, Programming Talent Development and Inclusion, NBC Entertainment. “It is especially gratifying to continue to provide a stepping stone into episodic directing for so many talented directors.”

Female Forward aims to achieve gender parity in the director’s chair, while the Emerging Director Program focuses on ethnically diverse male and gender non-binary directors. Finalists for both programs shadow episodic directors on an NBC scripted series and receive an in-season commitment to helm at least one episode of the series they shadow.

All finalists for both programs will be mentored by an established television director. Among them will be the Female Forward advisory council chaired by acclaimed director Lesli Linka Glatter. The council also includes Norberto Barba, Ruben Fleischer, Liz Friedlander, Pamela Fryman, Nisha Ganatra, Peter Horton, Gail Mancuso, Ken Olin, Julie Anne Robinson, Millicent Shelton and Michael Spiller. Jaffar Mahmood and Sharat Raju joined the council this year.

To be eligible for either Female Forward or the Emerging Director Program, finalists were required to have directing experience in their respective fields of expertise such as feature films, music videos, commercials, digital content and theater. Candidates could have no more than one scripted television directing credit.

ABOUT THE NBC TALENT INFUSION PROGRAMS (NBC TIPS)
Since 2000, NBC has been dedicated to discovering and nurturing onscreen, behind-the-camera and below-the-line talent of diverse and inclusive backgrounds through the NBC Talent Infusion Programs (NBC TIPS).
By Elia Esparza

Once again, Latino talent gets a pass or a snub from Hollywood’s colorblind industry. Ok, so I shouldn’t sound like sour grapes, I mean as I’m often reminded, “Be happy for the itty bitty blessings” that do come our way.

Ok, so here it goes. The 2019 EMMY Nominations were announced and the 71st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will broadcast on Sunday, September 22nd, honoring the greatest TV achievements of the past year. The major awards are divided into separate categories for comedy and drama.

Outstanding Comedy Series contenders include Barry, Fleabag, The Good Place, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Russian Doll, Schitt’s Creek, and Veep.

Outstanding Drama Series include Better Call Sal, Bodyguard, Game of Thrones, Killing Eve, Ozark, Pose, Succession, and This Is Us<g class="gr_ gr_10 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Style replaceWithoutSep" id="10" data-gr-id="10">.</g>

In searching the Latinx nominated, as bleak as it has always been for Latinos working in film or television, I was thrilled to have found a few names.

In the Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, Benicio Del Toro, Escape at Dannemora was nominated along with Mahershala Ali, True Detective, Huge Grant, A Very English Scandal, Jared Harris, Chernobyl, Jharrel Jerome, When They See Us, and Sam Rockwell, Fosse/Verdon.

Then I came across John Leguizamo, When They See Us nominated in the Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.

Way down in the Outstanding Narrator Category, I almost did a summersault when I see Anthony Mendez‘s name! He’s nominated for his work on the PBS docuseries, Wonders of Mexico. You all know him… that distinctive voice that pops into Jane The Virgin’s shows.

I would be remiss not to mention that the Steven Canals’ series Pose (nominated this year) has many Latinos worth mentioning– Jason A Rodriguez, David Granados, MJ Rodriguez, Indya Moore, Bianca Castro, Alexia Garcia, and Angel Bismark Curiel.

Where are the Latinas? Talented <g class="gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="5" data-gr-id="5"><g class="gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="5" data-gr-id="5">mujeres</g></g> like Jennifer Lopez, Gina Rodriguez, America Ferrera, Justina Machado, Rita Moreno, Rosie Perez, and the women from Vida, Pose, One Day At A Time, and Orange Is The New Black. It is beyond unforgiving that these super-talented women are snubbed!

Being an optimist always seeing the glass half-full, maybe next year it will be the year of the TV Latinas! These women made a boatload of money for the networks, they deserve Primetime EMMY nominations!

Tune-In to Watch Sosa Siblings Compete on SYTYCD Monday, July 15, 2019 FOX, 9:00 PM/8:00 PM Central

Parents Enrique and Lucrecia Sosa from Provo, Utah, have spent the majority of their married lives devoted to nurturing their children’s goals and dreams, and constantly fostering the importance of family unity and loyalty to each other. All three children, Tristen, 22, Stephanie, 19, and Ezra, 18, are professionally trained dancers in ballroom, ballet, Latin/Salsa and freestyle and have been dancing longer than they can remember.

It is no surprise to learn that FOX’s hit dance competition series, So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD), has been a TV program that the Sosa’s have watched for years.

“Every Monday night, we watched as a family,” admits Stephanie, “all three of us would tell our parents, ‘one day, we’re going to dance on this show,’ and now we’ve achieved that dream.”

That opportunity first came last year in SYTYCD’s Season 15, when Tristen and Stephanie auditioned and both made it into the competition. They didn’t get to the levels they’d hope for but the experience was invaluable—especially for Stephanie.

Having made it past the audition phase where they competed together as partners, on Monday, July 15th, the Sosa Siblings, Stephanie <g class="gr_ gr_25 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="25" data-gr-id="25">and</g> Ezra, will now compete against each other on SYTUCD’s Academy Part 1. The siblings are ballroom dancers and for the first time in the show’s history, two siblings have made it to the final rounds. From this point on, they are on their own coveting for that ultimate cash prize of $250,000 the winner will walk away with.

Stephanie, Ezra <g class="gr_ gr_29 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="29" data-gr-id="29">and</g> Tristen have been principal dancers for years and have garnered impressive credits. Stephanie has appeared on Disney Channel’s High School Musical TV series, and she and Ezra were both featured in Hallmark’s Dear Dumb Diary. All three siblings, Stephanie, Ezra <g class="gr_ gr_31 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="31" data-gr-id="31">and</g> Tristen, had the honor of dancing on Luke Perry’s K-9 Christmas in 2014.

“I was inspired to dance because of SYTYCD,” admits Stephanie. “It’s been like a dream come true and I’m really grateful for this opportunity. And, I hope I’m able to inspire others as I was. It’s hard to be a dancer being Latina and growing up a minority, having to fight for things. I do hope I make it far on the show, I mean getting to Top 4 would be amazing… but no matter how far I get, I just hope to inspire others.”

Little brother Ezra, feels equally excited and when asked about the sibling rivalry, he laughs. “There are little things here and there in the competition, where rivalry is evident, but no matter how far I make it in the competition, I am thrilled to be able to share this experience with my sister. But, yeah,” he laughs, “I want to win!”

So You Think You Can Dance, returned for its 16th season of the dance competition series that spotlights highly skilled dancers between the ages of 18 and 30, who compete in various dance styles to secure their place in the “SYTUCD studio.” Each week, contestants compete for America’s votes and are eliminated until a winner is named on the season finale. SYTYCD was created by Nigel Lythgoe and joining him at the judging table are Laurieann Gibson (Lady Gaga’s longtime choreographer) and SYTYCD alum Dominic “D-Trix” Sandoval. The show’s host is Cat Deeley.

“This Monday, [July 15th] our family’s story will be profiled,” says Enrique, the siblings’ father. “The Sosa’s are profoundly touched by the network’s sensitivity, respect, and support of Ezra and Stephanie’s background story. It has not been easy for us but ultimately, we are blessed.” Enrique, an engineering firm accountant, is also the former BYU men’s soccer team coach. He met his wife, Lucrecia, when they both were students at BYU and each playing on the soccer teams – he in the men’s and she in the women’s.

“You would think we would have produced three professional soccer players,” Enrique jokes, “but instead we’ve got three amazing dancers!”

As to what Tristen is up to these days, well he’s the Director of a new Latin Ballroom program in Las Vegas, Summerlin Dance Academy, with over 300 students!

Tune-in to SYTYCD on FOX, Monday, July 15th at 9:00 PM/8:00 PM Central to watch Ezra and Stephanie Sosa compete against each other and vote for your favorite. Both siblings are phenomenal dancers and are in it to win!

Follow the Sosa Siblings on social media:
Facebook: @SosaSiblings
Instagram: @SosaSiblings
Twitter: @SosaSiblings

The post Sosa Siblings 1st Pair of Siblings in Finals of “So You Think You Can Dance” first appeared on .
