by Luis Reyes

Last week at a star studded ceremony in Beverly Hills the National Hispanic Media Coalition held its 23rd Annual Impact Awards honoring the significant and impactful contribution of Latino content creators, producers and actors in Hollywood and in American popular culture.

Mentoring the new Generation.
America Ferrera, honored for Outstanding Series Producer for Netflix’s Gentefied said in her acceptance speech, “We are content creators and agents of change, changing the narrative….and now we are not doing it alone.” She dedicated the award to the late actress Lupe Ontiveros with whom she worked with on her debut film, Real Woman Have Curves Ferrera added, “Ontiveros over her career had few opportunities to share the depth of her extraordinary talent.”

Jay Hernandez who was honored for Outstanding Television Performance as the titular hero of Magnum P.I., commented upon receiving his award, “We get to tell the story of who we are with humanity, dignity and grace in these important times.” Hernandez tackled one of the most iconic characters in recent television history and made it his own.

Roberto Aguirre- Sacasa is the writer and executive producer of three hit series Riverdale, Kathy Keene and Chilly Adventures of Sabrina. He received an award for Outstanding Executive Producer for his accomplishments presented by Vida producer Tanya Saracho. Saracho acknowledged him for inspiring her pursuit of a writing career as a beginning playwright in Chicago, noting that they share many of the same cultural touchstones in their writing. “We have a rich past and there is positive change for authentic and accurate representations.” explained Aguirre. For this season of Starz Vida, Saracho proudly revealed that she hired all female Latinx directors.

Amy Lippman co- created the original Fox series Party of Five (1994-2000) about a group of Anglo kids who lose their mother and father in an accident and are left to fend on their own. Twenty years later Lippman updated the material with social relevance for today’s audiences about a Latinx family whose parents are deported from the U.S. and the kids are forced to cope on their own. Party of Five with an all Latinx cast is currently on Freeform television and executive produced by Lippman who received an Impact award.

(L-R) Niko Guardado of Party of Five, honoree Isabella Gomez, and Diego Tinoco of On My Block Photo by JC Olivera/Getty Images

Isabella Gomez was awarded for her Outstanding series performance as Elena Alvarez on the beloved “One Day at a Time, about three generations of a Cuban-American family living in the same house. The Netflix show now on Pop TV was co-created by Gloria Calderon Kellett who presented Gomez with the award.

Dany Garcia is described as a “Billion-dollar producer” for the number one worldwide box office star Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson and she runs a vast portfolio of entertainment companies. She is the founder, chairwoman and CEO of the Garcia companies and TCG Management and co-founder of Seven Bucks companies,

L-R Harim Garcia, Honoree Dany Garcia and Rienzi

The daughter of Cuban Immigrants, Dany has produced with her executive team and studio partners an amazing array of diverse content for a global audience with productions that include several successful film franchises. Garcia in a moment of reflection said, “I believe No Latinx woman has been there before me.”

She has amassed 1.5 billion in box-office receipts this year alone and more than $4 billion to date. Her productions include Jumanji, Jumanji: The Next Level, Hobbs and Shaw and the upcoming Disney’s Jungle Cruise.

Garcia received an Impact award for Outstanding Film Producer and it was presented to her by her brother Hiram Garcia, who runs her Seven Bucks film production unit.

Ozzie Areu, who rose from security guard at Warner Bros. studios and personal assistant to Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt to running Tyler Perry Studios is now Founder and CEO of his own studio facility, Areu Bros studios in Atlanta, Georgia. He received a Trailblazer Award as the first modern Latino studio owner following in the footsteps of Desi Arnaz who founded Desilu Studios with his wife Lucille Ball with the phenomenal success of their 50’s TV sitcom I Love Lucy.

Warner Bros. Chair and CEO Ann Sarnoff was given a Visionary award for greenlighting, producing and releasing Lin Manuel Miranda’s upcoming film version of his Tony Award winning musical drama In The Heights directed by Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) that opens in theaters nationwide on June 26th. It features a largely Latinx cast of young rising performers and established artists.

Sitcom stars Jacob Vargas (Mr. Iglesias) and Justina Machado (One Day at a Time) served as hosts for the awards ceremony and kept the proceeding lively and fast moving.

Justina Machado Photo by JC Olivera/Getty Images

Unlike the Oscars, the Emmy’s or the Golden Globes, the Impact Awards brought to the forefront, by their mere presence alone, a young empowered collective group of professional entertainment industry Latinx women. They were recognized for creating mainstream entertainment that reflects the world we live in and for telling stories that deserve to be told that reflect our various communities and experiences as Americans.

At the beginning of the decade of the 80’s and 90’s it was proclaimed by the media to be “The Decade of The Hispanic” and although there were notable gains made by filmmakers and talent (Luis Valdez, Robert Rodriguez, Gregory Nava, Edward James Olmos, Salma Hayek, Andy Garcia, Benicio del Toro, George Lopez etc.) the “Decade” never did materialize. Now into the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century, it seems like the work done by past generation is making way for the new Latinx generation to come of age in Hollywood. We are living in an era of Latinx talent across all the entertainment platforms. As one presenter commented,

“We have proven that together with artists and crafts people there exists beautiful content that celebrates our lives and values and voracious audiences [for the content]”

Netflix has a scripted series Selena currently in production on the early years of legendary Tejana singer, in addition for the first time in history, there are ten (10) Latino themed and cast series currently on broadcast, cable and streaming platforms.

The National Hispanic Media Coalition NHMC is a national media advocacy and social justice organization for the advancement of Latinx and the annual Impact Awards recognizes talent and executives who advance equality and opportunities for the Latinx community in media and entertainment. Brenda Victoria Castillo is the president/CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition.

The post NHMC 2020 Impact Awards Honors Latinx Generation Talent In Beverly Hills first appeared on .

After several well-attended protests, media interviews, significant coverage in print and television, institutional diversity reports that provided indisputable numbers of the near exclusion of Latinos in film, and an ongoing social media campaign against Paramount Pictures in 2018 for having the worst studio record in hiring Latinos in front and behind camera, the NHMC is now urging the U.S. Latino community to see the Paramount Pictures/Nickelodeon Movies film in large part because of its all-star, nearly all-Latino cast.

“Media has a profound impact on how people think and behave, and NHMC firmly believes that equity in media can only happen if film studio executives and those who greenlight blockbuster movies – like Dora – recognize that hiring Latinos is a profitable business imperative,” said Alex Nogales, president, <g class="gr_ gr_6 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="6" data-gr-id="6">and</g> CEO of the NHMC. “Paramount Pictures could no longer ignore that the U.S. Latino population is 18.9%, has an estimated purchasing power of $1.5 trillion dollars, and buys 24% of all movie tickets nationwide. By casting a nearly all-Latino cast, Paramount has taken its first step, in 105 years since it was founded, to diversify its nearly all-white workforce. It is my hope that Paramount continues to take representation seriously by diversifying all of its upcoming television, film and animated projects.”

“Dora and the Lost City of Gold is a movie that Latinos need to support,” says the <g class="gr_ gr_6 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="6" data-gr-id="6">incoming</g> president and CEO Brenda Castillo. “The plot is positive, bilingualism is embraced, and the characters are not stereotyped as thugs, drug dealers, prostitutes, gang members or all things that are bad in our society. Dora is a Latina superhero, and because of that, not only Latinas – but all women – should celebrate this film for its focus on a strong, competent woman as its lead. Please go see this movie so other film studio executives can realize that movies featuring Latinos and our rich culture can be a big, blockbuster hit.”

On February 22, 2019, nearly three months after NHMC’s last protest against Paramount Pictures, and two days before the NHMC’s 22nd Annual Impact Awards Gala, Paramount chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos announced the creation of a historic initiative – one that would promote diversity and inclusion across storylines, vendors, shooting locations and crew, in all film, television and animated projects. Read Gianopulos’ memo to Paramount employees here.

CBS recently debuted their sweeping changes in its new CBS This Morning and CBS Evening News, and once again they failed in representing the nation’s largest and fastest growing minority by not hiring at least one qualified Latino reporter or anchor on either one of its national news broadcasts.

Alex Nogales

Alex Nogales, president, and CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) in his statement said:

“There is no doubt that this is a business about ratings. However, [Susan] Zirinsky should focus just as much effort into diversifying her newsrooms by hiring qualified Latino journalists on air as she is by trying to turn a profit. Latino journalists are not only important because they sit at the table with decision-makers, but also cover more accurate portrayals of the beliefs and experiences of the Latino community, which represents 18.9% of the U.S. population – the biggest and growing ethnic minority in the nation.
Zirinsky and other high-ranking, CBS news executives are part of a profession that <g class="gr_ gr_23 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar multiReplace" id="23" data-gr-id="23">hold</g> others accountable, yet do not hold themselves accountable. They should be ashamed for not being committed to inclusive hiring practices <g class="gr_ gr_22 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="22" data-gr-id="22">because</g> race matters. Don’t get me wrong. The new CBS team has the qualifications and experience to do an outstanding job for CBS. But, our community is tired of being absent in the national consciousness and now absent in the consciousness of a national news network. We should not be at odds with CBS and other media outlets across the nation, fighting to be rightly represented on camera and off, and advocating for content that includes our demographic’s socio-economic and political concerns.

“If Zirinsky and her news teams are truly in pursuit of bringing authentic, three-dimensional and original stories to the American public ethically, impartially and honestly, then they should be inclusive of all major ethnic, racial groups in their hiring practices. If not, CBS risks Latinos abandoning its national newscasts.”

For 22 years the NHMC has been recognizing Latino talent on film and TV at the Impact Award, usually held in February prior to the Academy Awards. It is at these awards gala where Latino talent is recognized for their work, in front, and behind the camera. Also lauded are Hollywood entities and individual that believe in diversity and the inclusion of Latinos on both sides of the camera.

On Sunday, March 4 — the evening of the Oscars — Fuse will broadcast its commercial-free premiere of Dear White People at 8:00 pm ET/PT. Throughout the broadcast, Fuse will air redubbed interstitials featuring footage from the 1950 classic film, Cyrano de Bergerac starring José Ferrer, the last and only Latino actor to be honored with an Academy Award for Best Actor 68 years ago. The remixed footage will call attention to the lack of Latino representation and provide thought-provoking commentary on inclusion in entertainment.

“It is painfully obvious, that with rare exception, the contributions of the Latino community are significantly underrepresented by the film and television community,” said Fuse Media Senior Vice President, Content Distribution and Marketing Judi Lopez. “Media should be a mirror that reflects our culture and our country’s increasingly diverse population.”

As part of the initiative, Fuse will roll out original short form content centered around the importance of representation in media. Fuse’s digital and social platforms will further support the initiative with editorial coverage designed to spark conversation, including a quiz on the under-representation of Latinos in the entertainment industry. Fuse will also use its social media platforms to enlist fans to call out the best performances by actors, writers, directors and producers of color.

“We applaud Fuse for standing up for the Latino community, by helping us drive awareness for this incredible inequity in representation,” said Alex Nogales, President, National Hispanic Media Coalition. “More media companies need to take notice and need to follow the example.”
