By Bel Hernandez

This year 2,800 performers vie for an Emmy nomination in 2022. That is 935 more entrants than last year. One hundred and ninety-seven (197) of the contenders for an Emmy nomination, considered the highest honor a TV performer can attain, are Latinos.

While there isn’t any known research to compare the number of Latino entrants in the past years, this year’s list of Latino contenders for a 2022 Emmy nomination is remarkable. Will the large number of possible Latino nominees lead to Emmy winners? Historically, Latinos are usually left out of the Emmys, underrepresented, or not even in the running. The decidedly record number of submissions could be an indication that Latinos are being proactive in increasing the visibility of their work at the Emmys, that would definitely elevated their stature in Hollywood.

https://youtu.be/s99NLeE6a6U

This year there seem to be more “independent” submission by either the talent themselves of the production companies. Typically, the networks, cablers or streamers pay the entry fee to submit performers and/or creatives who they feel have a good chance of winning the Emmy. This year several independent production companies and individuals submitted themselves when their broadcast platforms indicated they would not be submitting them. One such production company is New Cadance Production who produce HBO Max’s The Garcias. Executive Producer/Creator Jeff Valdez share with that their production company had submitted in 29 different categories, the majority in the acting categories and definitely some of their creatives.

Come September 12, 2022 when the Emmys air on NBC, it will be interesting to see if diversity at the Emmys will, this year also include Latine talent.

For a bit of an overall perspective. The number of submissions vying for an Emmy nomination as a whole, is up in all categories and it breaks down like this:

Entries in the Comedy category are up from 576 to 984 entries.

Entries in the Drama category are up from 928 to 1,243 entries.

Entries in the TV Movie/Limited category are up from 361 to 573

These numbers do not take into account all the categories. This break down is only for the performer categories. The creative categories which include the producers of the shows, the directors, writers, and the technical categories could number in the thousands.

Of the 197 Latine contenders, the shows with the most Latinos submitted for an Emmy nomination are FXs Mayans MC created by Kurt Sutter and Elgin James with 13 submissions; HBO Max’s The Garcias created by Jeff Valdez, Gibby and Mike Cevallos with 12 submissions; and Apple TV’s Acapulco created by Eduardo Cisneros, Jason Shuman and Austin Winsberg with 10 submissions. Gentefied, created by Linda Yvette Chavez and Marvin Lemus, and executive produced America Ferrera has submitted eight names for possible noms. On My Block, created by Eddie Gonzalez, Jeremy Haft and Lauren Lungerich submitted five talents; while Hightown, created by Rebecca Perry Cutter and starring Monica Raymund, and With Love, created by Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce, both submitted four talents each.

Actors Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Ariana DeBose and director Guillermo Del Toro stand out among the 14 Latinos nominated for the 94th Academy Awards. Consequently, Twenty-twenty-two and 2006 tie as the years with the most Latino candidacies in Oscars history. Notably, this year’s nods for Latinos are across the board and include nominations in the most coveted categories.

Del Toro’s film noir Nightmare Alley nabbed four noms, including Best Picture for the Mexican cineaste, while Disney’s Encanto, set in a magical Colombia, got three, including Animated Feature Film.

Two other movies with Latino connections that received multiple nominations are the biopic Being the Ricardos with three, including one for Bardem as a leading actor, and West Side Story with seven, with one for DeBose as a supporting actress.

Nightmare Alley (Photo: Searchlight Pictures)

INCLUSION, LAYERED STORIES
This year’s inclusion of three Latino noms in the acting categories is a reminder of the power and impact of inclusion, diversity and accurate and multi-dimensional portrayals of minorities in film, for which Latinos have been pressing for decades. The noms were arguably made possible by projects with Latino themes and featuring prominent Latino roles, namely Encanto, West Side Story and Being the Ricardos. Moreover, the candidacies of Bardem, Cruz and DeBose are history-making.

TWO SPANISH ICONS BOTH WITH FOUR NOMS EACH
In what may be a first, Spain’s husband-wife duo Bardem and Cruz could be the couple that has each received four Oscar nominations and won an Oscar each.

Bardem’s Best Actor in a Leading Role Oscar nom for Being the Ricardos is his fourth for the Oscars, winning for his role of a psychopathic killer in No Country for Old Men in 2008. His nod this year ties him with Mexican-born thespian Anthony Quinn as the Latino male actor with the most Academy Award nominations in history.

In a statement released by Bardem yesterday, he congratulated his fellow nominee in the best actor category, Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Benedict Cumberbatch and Andrew Garfield.

The 2022 Oscars edition also brings a fourth Oscar nod for Cruz, who competes in Actress in a Supporting Role for Madres Paralelas, her seventh collaboration with acclaimed director Pedro Almodovar. This year’s fourth nomination makes Cruz the Latina actress with the most Oscar nominations. In 2008 she won the Academy Award for the romantic dramedy Vicky Cristina Barcelona, directed by Woody Allen.

Penelope Cruz, right, in Madres Paralelas (Photo: Sony Pictures Classics)

Other nominees in this category include Jessica Chastain, Olivia Colman, Nicole Kidman and Kristen Stewart.

LATINA & BLACK
DeBose, a proud Afro-Latina, received a nod for Actress in a Supporting Role for playing Anita in Steven Spielberg’s reimagined musical West Side Story. She is the first U.S. born Latina of black descent to be nominated for the Academy Award. The role of Anita won her the Golden Globe earlier this year.

Rita Moreno played Anita in the original 1960 musical feature, taking home both the Golden Globe and the Oscar for her role. History could repeat itself if DeBose can replicate Moreno’s win of both these two industry awards for playing the same character.

In her first shot for the Academy Award, Debose joins a category that includes nominees Jessie Buckley, Judi Dench, Kirsten Dunst and Aunjanue Ellis.

‘ENCHANTING’ PRODUCTION, MUSIC
All three nominations for Encanto include Latinos. In Best Animated Film, Chicana filmmaker Yvett Merino is one of three producers sharing the honor.

The Disney animated film’s two other nods are for music. Lin-Manuel Miranda vies for the prize for Original Song with the Spanish-language ballad “Dos Oruguitas,” giving the acclaimed Puerto Rican a second chance to become an EGOT. The prestigious acronym distinguishes a handful of artists who have won the four top American awards in entertainment, an Emmy for TV, Grammy for music, Oscar for film and a Tony for theater. Having won the first three, Miranda lost his first bid for an Academy Award in 2017 for writing the theme song for another Disney film, Moana.

Encanto (Photo: Disney)

Miranda’s competition this year includes renowned songwriters Beyoncé, Van Morrison and Billie Eilish.

“Dos Oruguitas” is also making history as the first song fully in Spanish nominated for an Oscar. While Coco’s Academy Award-winning “Remember Me” included lyrics in Spanish, the ballad was a bilingual composition with about half in English and half in Spanish.

Encanto‘s Germaine Franco is a first-time Oscar nominee competing in the Original Score category. She is not the only contender of Latino descent in her category. Franco faces Spanish Alberto Iglesias, the composer for Madres Paralelas.

Carlos López Estrada of Mexico, who stands out among the producers of Raya and the Last Dragon that also vies for the award for Best Animated Film.

SEVERAL CONTENDERS IN SHORTS
Additionally, five Latino producers, including a woman, battle it out with short films.

Chile’s Hugo Covarrubias and Tevo Díaz compete in Short Film Animated with the Spanish-language Bestia, a stop-motion movie about a secret police agent during the Chilean military dictatorship. Other nominees in the same category are Spain-born Alberto Mielgo and Leo Sanchez with The Windshield Wiper centered on a man who ponders about love while smoking at a cafe.

For her part, K.D. Dávila stands out among the candidates for an Oscar for Short Film Live action. The Mexican-American filmmaker competes with Please Hold, about a young man whose life is derailed and finds himself at the mercy of automated justice.

The Oscars will broadcast live March 27.

CLICK HERE For a Full List of Latinos Eligible for An Emmy Nomination

By Justina Bonilla & Bel Hernandez

As the Television Academy Primetime Emmy Awards begin the journey to the awards ceremony and the selection of the 2020 Emmy winners on September 20, 2020 at 5 PM PST on ABC, we point out that this year there is a record number of Latinos (over 150) who are being considered for a nomination.

The official announcement of the 2020 Primetime Emmy nominees will be streamed on emmys.com on Tuesday, July 28th beginning at 11:30 a.m. ET / 8:30 a.m. PT.

In spite of the show being cancelled seven of the actors were submitted for possible Primetime Emmy consideration

The list of Latinos eligible for Primetime Emmy nominee consideration was definitely in the upswing this year. It might be an indication that finally the Latino themed shows and/or Latinos/as in lead roles on networks and streaming platforms shows, are being written with enough of a storyline that truly offers the actor the ability to show their skills and be noticed. To their credit, the networks/streaming platforms are finally showing their support by submitted Latinos/a talent for consideration.

However, none of this happens without the scripts that provides the vehicle for the actor to shine. Shows created by Gloria Calderon-Kellett (One Day At a Time), Tanya Saracho, (Vida), Linda Ivette Chavez (Gentefied) and Marvin Lemus (Gentefied) are the major reason of why so many Latino/as are in consideration this year.

Whether it be in an all Latino themed show or with Latino/a series regular, there is an uptick in participation in the 2019-2020 television season. With over 150+ Latinos appearing in front of the camera, starring as the “topliners”.

Four of the actors from Gentefied were submitted by Netlix for Emmy Consideration

“Topliners”, is defined in the Latino Donor Collaborative (LDC), a non-profit organization dedicated to reshaping the perception of Latinos as part of the American social mainstream, in their 2019 study Above The Line Latinos In Media as; a) the actor or actress in the protagonist role, b) a show’s host or judge; or c) a co-lead in an ensemble cast., as exemplified in the TV series Mr. Iglesias (Netflix) and One Day at a Time (Pop).

Justina Machado is a “Top Pick” for an Emmy nom for her work in One Day At A Time

While there is an increase of Latinos in topliner shows, such Nexflix’s On My Block , One Day at a TIme and Gentefied, and Latinos in lead roles in various series, such as Brooklyn Nine Nine, What We Do in the Shadows, overall Latino representation is still minimal. It does not look any better, as this year has also seen the recent cancellations of Latino themed TV shows, including ABC’s The Baker and the Beauty, Starz’s Vida, Freeform’s Party of 5, and Hulu’s Broke. The surprising killing off of actor Nicholas Gonzalez’s character of Dr. Melendrez on The Good Doctor was a major step backwards for ABC since Gonzalez’s was beloved by fans but more importantly showed Latinos a very positive role.

Five Possible nominees for Netflix’s On My Block

The cancellation of not one, but three Latino themed show continues to send a message, that diversity, to the Hollywood powers that be, does not include U.S. Latinos.

According to the LDC study, the majority of Latino topliners on the small screen are most visible on broadcast network shows at 11.1%, followed by OTT (streaming platforms) at 8.8%, then premium cable shows at 6.8%, and finally, the lowest visibility being 5.6% on cable shows.

In acknowledgement of the small advancement of Latino/a representation on broadcast, streaming platforms and cable, Latin Heat is releasing its own prediction list of who we would like to see get that Primetime Emmy nomination. Our choices are based on IMDB ratings as of the writing of this article, and audience reaction to the show. We have made two selections under for each category, a “Top Bet” and a “Long Shot”.
