This Most Definitely Ain’t Patti Page’s Old Cape Cod.

By Roberto Leal

In 1957, Patti Page recorded her hit song, Old Cape Cod. The wistful tune was a melodic love letter about an idyllic seaside community dotted with quaint villages with the aroma of lobster stew wafting through the air over a romantic moonlit bay. According to Page, “You’re sure to fall in love with old Cape Cod.” Ah yes, a quiet, peaceful haven with ocean views where you could live and raise a family.

Monica Raymund (Credit: Courtesy)

That was Cape Cod circa 1950. Fast forward to the present and we find Cape Cod and nearby Provincetown hit by hard times. Crime, corruption, alcoholism and rampant drug addiction have turned the once popular seaside resort area into a dangerous snake pit of inequity. The Cape Cod that is the setting for STARZ’s Hightown isn’t a safe place to raise your cobra, much less your child.

HIGHTOWN: POST MODERN NEO-NOIR AT ITS BEST

The classic film noir genre movies were at their glorious black and white greatest during Hollywood’s Golden Age in the 1940s and 1950s. These gritty Cold War-era urban crime thrillers were characterized by tough, cynical private detectives played by actors like Humphrey Bogart, Robert Mitchum and Alan Ladd, who often worked on both sides of the law. The femme fatale was another vital character in any film noir movie. The femme fatale was always beautiful, seductive and her loyalties were never clear and she often double-crossed the hero. In films like This Gun for Hire (Veronica Lake), Out of the Past (Jane Greer) and Double Indemnity (Barbara Stanwyck), these femme fatales personified dangerous dames in the classic film noir era.

The neo-noir movies of the ’70s and 80’s retained the basic template of film noir but were in Technicolor and the acting style was more natural, not quite so stylized. They were often homages to great film noir of the past, Chinatown and Body Heat, come to mind. But they could also be set in a dystopian future landscape like Blade Runner and because the old Hollywood code no longer exists, the sexuality and profanity in neo-noir films are more explicit and not implied like it was in the good old days.

Hightown series creator Rebecca Perry Cutter (Gotham) has constructed a world in what we can safely call post-modern neo-noir. It’s a world that still observes the basic tenets of film noir: crime, world-weary cynicism, corruption and alienation. But Cutter has turned everything else on its head with compelling dramatic results.

Hightown (Credit: Starz)

Typically, film noirs are set in big urban cities like Los Angeles or New York City. Hightown takes place in what used to be the picturesque seaside resort of Cape Cod but has now deteriorated into an area of crime, alcohol and drug addiction. The old reliable hyper-masculine, hard-boiled hero played by the likes of Sam Spade, Mike Hammer, Jake Gettes has been replaced by Jackie Quiñones, a diminutive Latina who works for the National Marine Fishery Services. Hightown is also populated with a diverse cast of characters including Latinos, African Americans and Anglos. Cutter has a requisite femme fatale in Hightown but also has strong, independent women in other roles.

The opening credits are a fast and furious series of jump-cut images of the ocean, sailboats and sandy beaches, vacationers and people dancing to the sounds of The Textones performing their punk rock version of The Go Go’s hit song Vacation. But look closely, neatly spliced in between those festive scenes are images of people smoking dope, snorting blow and cooking heroin in a spoon. These subliminal-like images foreshadow what this show is really about and why it is called Hightown.

THE LATINA FISH COP ANTI-HERO

Monica Raymund (Chicago Fire), plays Jackie Quiñones, is a hard-working Latina for the National Marine Fisheries Services by day and is an openly gay, promiscuous, coke-snorting, alcoholic by night with no outwardly discernible redeemable qualities. Raymund’s portrayal of this Latina character as a terribly flawed anti-hero is the driving force behind the complicated narrative of this dark, intense and riveting crime drama.

Mike Pniewski (Madam Secretary) plays Ed, Jackie’s fish cop partner and elderly father-figure who worries about her reckless self-destructive lifestyle and is constantly inviting her over for dinner. Ed keeps hoping something will happen that will change the trajectory of her life.

https://youtu.be/p4xAoWkA5rU

One night Quiñones discovers the murdered body of a young woman. It’s obviously drug-related and it sparks a change in Quiñones. She becomes determined to find out who did it and why. James Badge Dale (The Departed) is Detective Ray Abruzzo. He’s a narc working on the murder and its connection to a larger drug case. He and Quiñones form an uneasy, reluctant alliance to solve the crime. The problem is Abruzzo is an amoral cop with a sex addiction. Abruzzo’s sexual misconduct with confidential informants and a female police officer threatens to destroy not only his career but the entire drug case investigation.

Riley Voelkel (Roswell, New Mexico) as Rene, is the girlfriend of a drug kingpin, Frankie Cuevas, menacingly played by Amaury Nolasco (Transformers). While Frankie is doing time in prison, Abruzzo recruits Rene as a confidential informant. A sexual relationship develops and in true femme fatale fashion, Rene stabs Abruzzo in the back, turns him into the cops and drops a dime on him. The whole drug case against Frankie Cuevas goes up in smoke.

Season one ends with Cuevas getting out of prison with Rene dutifully waiting for him outside the gate. Quiñones tries to dry up at AA meetings with the occasional moral lapse. But she is outraged and more determined to solve the murder of the young girl.

IS THERE REDEMPTION IN JUSTICE?

As with all great film noir, the plot is secondary to the characters in the story. With rare exceptions, the characters in any iteration of film noir are Shakespearean tragic human beings. Their fatal flaws never fail to betray them at the worst possible times. The fascinating paradoxical conflict in film noir crime dramas is the good guys often do bad things to catch bad guys.

As the first Latina anti-hero, Quiñones struggles with her demons of alcoholism, drug use and a hedonistic lifestyle as she earnestly tries to seek justice for the murdered girl she encountered on the beach one night and find redemption in the process.

Season two of ‘Hightown’ premieres on STARZ on Oct. 17 and and is available on streaming services like Hulu and Amazon with a Starz add-on. Also, Season one is currently available free to Prime Video customers.

Stars: Monica Raymund, Riley Voelkel, James Badge Dale, Amaury Nolasco, Mike Pniewski, Atkins Estimond and Tanya Glanz

The National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) came to a close on the third day of bringing together some of Hollywood’s top content creators and executives to address the issues of Latinos in entertainment, and with it a big announcement.

Early today NALIP announced the Latino Lens: Producers Pipeline Incubator which will be presented by NALIP and its founding sponsor, The Walt Disney Company, as well as the Motion Picture Association, Amblin Partners, and STARZ. The ground-breaking industry-wide incubator aims to mold and cultivate the next generation of executive producers – Latinos.

“It is important for our production companies to give access to diverse producers,” said Latondra Newton, Chief Diversity Officer, The Walt Disney Company NALIP has proven to be a great source of talent and we hope to tap into their network and open more doors for the next Kathleen Kennedys and Lin-Manuel Mirandas.”

This incubator will train and expose individuals to the motion picture & television business divisions, distribution, provide opportunities to accelerate fresh inclusive perspectives, and learn the process of a Producer’s overall deal. This is a major step toward the old adage that Latinos are needed in the “greenlight” position to be able to get their project made.

“We’ve long been impressed with the opportunities that NALIP creates for talented young Latino producers, and we are honored to support the inaugural Producers Pipeline Incubator,” said Victoria Alonso , EVP Production, Marvel Studios. “Through this program, we look forward to introducing this exceptional group to our work at Amblin and sharing insights into producing film and television in an unprecedented period of change for the entertainment business.”

The stats of the power of the Latino consumer market are glaring. With 58.9 million Latinos across the nation that generate $2.6 trillion in GDP a year and an audience that brings in 20% of the box office, it is unfathomable that it has taken so long to get the attention of Hollywood. NALIP is an organization that has been working behind the scenes for over 20 years to bring the lack of Latinx executives into the conversation as it relates to the financial growth and future of this business. This incubator will also integrate forecasting in the technology sectors and platforms transforming the creation and distribution of content.

The pilot program will accept up to 12 participants in its first year to undergo an eight-week curriculum and mentorship program, which will be led by a cohort of successful producers with overall deals currently working in the industry. Following the mentorship, four participants will receive the opportunity for a six-month paid fellowship at The Walt Disney Company, Amblin Partners, and STARZ, and will be provided with further knowledge and experience to help craft their career.

“The Producers Pipeline Incubator aligns perfectly with our #TakeTheLead initiative and our continued commitment to narratives by, about and for women and underrepresented audiences,” said Jeffrey Hirsch, President and CEO of STARZ. “This incubator program is an opportunity to further progress on our mission and commitment to representation on screen, behind the camera and throughout our organization.”

The program aims to cultivate, develop, and fortify the capabilities of executive producers through active, hands-on learning. Program participants will gain insights from industry professionals and mentors who can speak to the value of pursuing, developing, and ultimately overseeing the success of a slate of projects and IP. With the support of all the partners, the incubator will be scaled to introduce new studio partners, provide additional fellowships in the next edition, and support professional development opportunities for the fellows moving forward.

January 1

Today as the world welcomes the New Year, Carlos Gomez celebrates another birthday. Born in Miami, Carlos started his career in entertainment as a dancer. He is, what we call in the business, a “triple threat”…an actor, dancer, and singer. He showed off those skills in 2008 when he was one of the original cast members of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway play In The Heights. Gómez’s two songs, Inútil and Atención, were both part of the Grammy Award-winning musical soundtrack.

(RT) Carlos Gomez as Carlos Sanchez in The Glades (Photo: A&E)

However, prior to his return to the stage, Carlos had already established himself as a film actor (Desperado, Fools Rush in, Enemy of the State, Mambo Kings, The Negotiator) and on television. He starred in Law & Order True Crime on NBC as Jose Menendez. He also co-starred in CBS’ hit drama series Madam Secretary as Agent Jose Campos. His series regular role on A&E’s The Glades earned him three Imagen Awards for Best Supporting Actor.

This past year Gomez was a series regular was on ABC series The Baker and the Beauty. Although the series was canceled after just one season, Carlos is just too good to stay unemployed for too long. Last month, it was announced that he landed a series regular role on Starz’s second season of Hightown. Gomez will play Rafael a charismatic and charming fisherman from New Bedford, MA, with a dark side. What a way to start the New Year…a Birthday ad a new gig.

By Elia Esparza

As the TV series pick up or renewal period is coming to an end, ABC television executives are still keeping us in limbo about The Baker and the Beauty. Although the season finale, a two hour special clocked in their highest rating delivering a 0.6 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic for the first hour and 3.01 million viewers, ABC is slow in announcing a renewal.

But since we are still in the COVID-19 pandemic and quarantined, the only thing that is certain is that executives continue to scramble to decide which shows stay and which will be cancelled.

Here’s a ShowBuzz on who is IN or OUT on Latino themed series across the scope of broadcast TV, Streaming and cable:

The Baker and the Beauty — In or Out?

The ABC dramedy is still waiting for an official Season 2 pickup. Our favorite bakery family has not been told if they will be renewed. What! It should be a slam dunk that fan-favorite series be renewed. The Baker and the Beauty is about a young man named Daniel Garcia who works in the family bakery, but then he meets superstar Noa Hamilton, and his life moves into the spotlight. The story ride is hilarious, painful, and joyful. The series is high quality, great writing, and with a stellar cast starring Victor Rasuk (Fifty Shades of Grey), Natalie Kelley, Carlos Gomez, Dan Bucatinsky, Lisa Vidal, David Del Rio, Belissa Escobedo, and Michelle Veintimilla.

The series is an adaptation of the Israeli romantic-comedy Beauty and the Baker. The American version was developed and executive produced by Dean Georgaris, Becky Hartman Edwards, David Frankel, Avi Nir, Alon Shtruzman, Peter Traugott, Assi Azar, and Rachel Kaplan for Universal Television. To date, ABC has yet to renew or cancel. Stay tuned.

Vida Cancelled — Sad and Bittersweet Goodbye

Who knows why on earth the suits at Starz decided to end this critically acclaimed drama after just three seasons. Amid the COVID-19 crisis, the executives decided to rob us of this award-winning complex dramedy set in Boyle Heights and with an LGBTQ-focused theme of Season 4.

The third season of Tanya Saracho’s Chingona Productions Vida debuted on the Starz network in May 2018. On April 26th Starz announced that the series starring Melissa Barrera (In the Heights), Mishel Prada (Riverdale), and Ser Anzoategui (East Los High) had canceled the series. When Vida first debuted, many television reviewers deemed it “one of the best new shows of 2018.” During its second season, the show won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2019.

Vida was inspired by a short story titled Pour Vida Richard Villegas Jr. The series went on to also star Chelsea Rendon, Carlos Miranda, Maria-Elena Laas, and Roberta Colindrez.

Season 4 release date on Netflix is still under wraps, however it is looking good.

What we do know is that Lauren Iungerich recently signed a multi-year overall deal with Netflix, so it looks good. Co-creator Eddie Gonzalez recently told digitalspytv.com, “What we can tell you is that, in communities like that, there are so many great stories. Because of that, that will help us with the story moving forward.” He also added, “I have 117 first cousins. I can mine a lot of material from those cousins alone.”

We are going out on a limb (not), and saying the best-case scenario is March 2021– next year!

On My Block stars Sierra Capri, Jason Cenao, Brett Gray, Diego Tinoco, Jessica Marie Garcia, and Julio Macias.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine — Renewed for a Season 8!

It’s official, Brooklyn Nine-Nine will return for an eighth season according to an NBC Instagram announcement:

With two Latina leads (Melissa Fumero and Stephanie Beatriz front and center the show can’t help but be Latino/a themed. According to an NBC the cast found out about being renewed during a table read, “We want to dispel some of these crazy rumors about next season. We want you to come back.” Congratulations to the large ensemble cast: Andy Samberg, Melissa Fumero, Stephanie Beatriz, Terry Crews, Chelsea Peretti, Andre Braugher, Joe Lo Tru, Joel McKinnon, Jason Mantzoukas, Marc Evan Jackson, Eva Longoria, Dirk Blocker, Adam Sandler, Gina Gershon, and Katey Sagal.

Further, it was reported that on linear TV, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which NBC saved in 2018 after it had been canceled by Fox, averaged a 1.2 rating and 3.2 million viewers overall in Live+Same Day ratings last season, up +15% versus the prior season on Fox. After 35 days of linear and digital delayed viewing, the show last season grew to a 3.1 rating in 18-49 and 6.4 million viewers overall, with 59% of that 18-49 rating coming from nonlinear sources — the #1 biggest digital percentage for an NBC series last season.

The Good Doctor — ABC’s Most-Watched Show

Nicholas Gonzalez as Dr. Neil Melendrez

It was great news when ABC announce that the critically acclaimed show The Good Doctor had been renewed for Season 4. However, when Dr. Neil Melendez, one of the most beloved characters of the show played by Nicholas Gonzalez is killed off in the season finale, it was a shocker. it’s ABC’s most-watched show and killing off your original cast member, for “creative reasons” was a stab at the hearts of fans all over the world. they took to social media, but what was done was done. The Good doctor goes on without Gonzalez who helped make the show a hit. . The cast consists of Freddie Highmore, Paige Spara, Antonia Thomas. Its a diverse cast, however we hope that the producers do the right thing and bring on another Latino character, since Latinos are the largest minority in the U.S. and not having Latinos represented in the show is just not right.

Party of Five – Gone After Just 1 Season

Freeform cancelled the re-boot of Party of Five a month after season one. The series reimagend the original series that ran from 1994 to 2000 with a Latino family whose parents face deportation. Their children are left to fend for them with the older brother having to shift his life to run the family restaurant, while the high school daughter is now having to be the “mom” for her younger brother and sister.

The Party of Five cast included Brandon Larracuente, Emily Tosta, Niko Guardado and Elle Paris Legaspi. Bruno Bichir and Fernanda Urrejola as the parents. Amy Lippman and Chris Keyser who originally created the series served as executive Producers along with Rodrigo Garcia the (The Affair, Nine Lives)who also directed.

Narcos: Mexico – Will there be another year of Narcos?

While season 3 of Narcos: Mexico has not been confirmed by Netflix, showrunner Eric Newman is game to continue the drama—even up to the present day Mexico, which is still working through drug wars.

With resignation, we mourn our favorites TV shows which got cancelled, look forward to the continuing shows and anxiously await new shows which are in the pipeline.

Rendon’s Mari Flourishes As The Hit Series End

By Bel Hernandez

Chelsea Rendon was born to act. She has been doing so since the age of six — and not just “trying” to act, booking the jobs. By seven she had booked her first lead role in the ALMA Award winning independent film, No Turning Back. She has not had time to look back much because through her adolescence, her teens and into her twenties, she has been busy working in just about every hit show on TV and some amazing films. Currently Rendon is starring in the third and final season of the Starz hit show VIDA. Later this year two highly anticipated films she worked on will be released, Cristina Ibarra and Alex Rivera’s The Infiltrators and David Ayers The Tax Collector.

Always driven to excel, in 2017 while working with Ayers on the Netflix film Bright, Rendon took a piece of his advice to heart. He complimented her talent and felt she had a lot more to give. He suggested she take classes with Ivana Chumbick studios, telling her that Chumbick would be the one to bring it out in her. She started classes in February and in May she booked the role of Mari in VIDA. It was a turning point in her career.

Rendon’s Mari, the hard core Boyle Heights gentrification activist, Entertainment Weekly called her performance “fierce and funny portrayal of guerrilla activist Marisol.” Rendon thanks creator/showrunner Tanya Saracho for writing her character, and all the female characters in theshow, with authenticity and as multi-layered characters; the writing is what allows their talent to shine, which leads to other work.

Last year Rendon landed the recurring role of Annie Gonzalez in Showtime’s groundbreaking hit show Shameless where she had a 6 episode arch in 2019. She adds that show to the long list of TV credits which include Major Crimes, All Rise, The Bridge, and Bosch, among many.

Currently she co-stars in The Infiltrators which was released on virtual cinemas on May 4th by The Oscilloscope Laboratories and on June 2nd, will release on-demand and digitally. Then, later this year she will be seen in director David Ayer’s The Tax Collector.

For now as the final season of VIDA plays out, we see Rendon’s role of Mari become more prominent. In these last episodes of the series, Mari falls out of favor with her crowd of radical gentrification advocates; she faces homelessness; her father died in this past Sunday’s episode; and in the last episode of the series it literally ends on her, in a quandary, wondering what she will do next. A set up for a spin-off? One can only hope — but for sure we will be seeing more of Rendon, you can bet on that.

The post Chelsea Rendon’s Mari Shines in Last Season of “Vida” first appeared on .

By Elia Esparza

It was announced that one of the most important series broadcasting, Vida, has earned a third season on the STARZ (Lionsgate company) cable network. Jeffrey Hirsch stated that Tanya Saracho‘s award-winning original series has been picked up to keep being a representation for diversity, for women, and in Latinas in particular.

“It is a rarity in television today to have a series earn the level of critical praise for two consecutive seasons and spark cultural conversation in the way that Vida has,” said Hirsch. “We are proud to continue to tell this story with Tanya [Saracho] and the incredible cast and crew she has assembled.”

Vida’s Latino audience has grown 56% compared to the same period in Season 1*, according to Kathryn Tyus-<g class="gr_ gr_236 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="236" data-gr-id="236">Adai</g>, Sr. VP of Original programming, the Starz executive in charge of Vida. Additionally, Starz Latino subs have grown 17% since the series premiered in May 2018, and the number of new customers who watched Vida season two on the app in the first seven days was almost double year over year. No surprise to Latinos in the industry who have been screaming for these type of authentic, vulnerable and raw drama series that accurately represent our various lifestyles, culture, <g class="gr_ gr_784 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="784" data-gr-id="784">and</g> traditions.

Tanya Saracho has always known this and everything she has ever written and/or produced has been well received by the Latino domestic and global viewership.

In the second season of Vida, Lyn (Melissa Barrera) and Emma (Mishel Prada) begin the monumental task of rebuilding their mother’s business while navigating financial constraints, competing developers, and the growing anti-gentrification movent. The sisters must contemplate the relationships in their lives, including their own, and are forced to dig deep to unearth what their mother’s legacy means to them.

Via Saracho’s creative and realistic vision, one of the things that make Vida special is that it is bringing underrepresented Latino American stories to the forefront. According to The Atlantic, “It’s special because it’s doing it so well, mining epic drama and the discrete experiences of its characters’ lives to create something that’s elaborate, distinct, and beautiful all at the same time.”

Mexican-born <g class="gr_ gr_279 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep" id="279" data-gr-id="279">Saracho,</g> started her career as a successful Chicago playwright and it led her to Hollywood where aside for Vida, she has writer credits for How To Get Away With Murder, HBO’s Looking, Girls, and Devious Maids. Her next project in development is Brujas, a TV movie she is writing and Executive Producer.

She is repped by United Talent Agency (UTA), for both talent and literary agent.

The post Unapologetically Latina, Tanya Saracho’s “Vida” Secures 3rd Season! first appeared on .
