Newest Iteration of Superman Opens July 11th

By Bel Hernandez Castillo

As Superman opens in theaters today, audiences will see the arrival of a new generation of DC heroes—and among them, Isabela Merced is stepping into the spotlight. The 23-year-old actress makes her debut as Kendra Saunders, a.k.a. Hawkgirl, in the latest installment of the franchise, marking her first foray into the superhero genre.

Born Isabela Yolanda Moner in Cleveland, Ohio, to a Peruvian mother and American father, Merced grew up speaking Spanish as her first language and often spent summers in Peru. Her stage name, Merced, honors her late grandmother and her family’s heritage—a gesture that reflects how deeply her culture influences her identity. She made her Broadway debut at 10 in Evita, performing alongside Ricky Martin. Shortly after, she found success on Nickelodeon, starring in 100 Things to Do Before High School.

She transitioned to feature films with roles in Transformers: The Last Knight (2017), Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018), and Instant Family (2018). Her breakout role came in 2019 when she played the title character in Dora and the Lost City of Gold. Since then Merced has been quite busy. In the past two years, Merced has expanded her portfolio, appearing in projects such as Madame Web, Turtles All the Way Down, and Alien: Romulus (all released in 2024).

The casting of Merced is a significant moment for representation in comic book adaptations. She becomes one of only a handful of Latina actresses to take on a major superhero role in a live-action film, joining names like Zoe Saldaña (Guardians of the Galaxy), Salma Hayek (Eternals), and Xochitl Gomez (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness).

Hawkgirl is part of director James Gunn’s new “Gods and Monsters” slate for the DC Universe, with Merced set to reprise the role in future projects. The character Hawkgirl is part of the Justice Gang, a group of corporate-sponsored heroes that don’t exactly share Superman’s morals. Hawkgirl makes the first major big-screen appearance and the buzz is that there will be more of Hawkgirl in future sequels.

Earlier this year, she joined HBO’s hit series The Last of Us as Dina, a key character introduced in Season 2. Her performance has been widely praised and is expected to continue in future seasons.

Taking Flight as Hawkgirl

In Superman, Merced’s Hawkgirl is a winged warrior and archaeologist, reimagined with organic, feathered wings and a strong physical presence. The actress underwent extensive stunt and wire work to bring the character to life and has hinted at Hawkgirl’s larger role in the DC Universe moving forward.

Merced has expressed joy about exploring the character further, including potential storylines involving Green Lantern, with whom Hawkgirl has had romantic ties in the comics.

Merced’s trajectory is poised to become a fixture in both blockbuster franchises and prestige television. In addition to her ongoing work in The Last of Us, she is expected to appear in upcoming DC films as part of Gunn’s connected universe. With a growing list of credits across genres and platforms, Merced’s transition from child star to leading actress marks her as one of Hollywood’s rising talents.

DC Studios’ Superman is a A James Gunn Film. A Troll Court Entertainment/The Safran Company Production, which will be in theaters and IMAX® nationwide on July 11, 2025, and internationally beginning 9 July 2025, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

The post Isabela Merced: Superhero Status As Hawkgirl In DC’s ‘Superman’ first appeared on .

Rafael Leyva dreamt of being a cinematographer after seeing the movie Jaws with his dad as a kid in Puerto Rico. In 2018 the American Society of Cinematographers chose him as their honorary American Rising Star. His career as a director of photography has taken off with several projects in the pipeline. One of those is the Disney Channel luchadora superhero series Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion which premieres on June 3 on Disney+.

Scarlett Estevez as Violet Rodriguez, and J.R. Villarreal as Cruz de la Vega. (Photo: Disney/Brian Roedel)

Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion revolves around a U.S. Latino family. It’s about superheroes, family with they their beautiful culture at the centerpiece. The cast is headed by Scarlett Estevez (Bunk’s Lucifer) who plays Violet Rodriguez AKA Ultra Violet and her Uncle Black Scorpion played by J.R. Villareal (United We Fall).

After reading the first script of the show, Leyva’s mind raced back to the 90s films he grew up watching. “I automatically thought of the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, 1989 Batman,” he explained. “All movies that I idolized, all with a specific look.”

Leyva went in for his first interview with Disney with his ideas on how he would shoot the show. “I turn words into pictures. I told them that this was something that had to be stylized, single-camera as much as possible.”

(Photo: Rafael Leyva Instagram)

After shooting UltraViolet, he was off to Atlanta to shoot a project for the multi-hyphenate, entertainment disrupter, Tyler Perry. Although Leyva has shot several movies of the week and several TV shows including Crackle’s The Oath and Deadly Affair, working with the Disney Channel and now with Perry could prove to be the breakthrough Leyva has been waiting for. Shooting another project for Perry, in the works could be the clue.

“I just returned from Atlanta where I shot something for Academy Award-winning filmmaker Tyler Perry that was really incredible.” Leyva said but when asked about it, he had to explain, “I signed an NDA so I can’t talk about it.”

However, he did share the news that he felt that he had “passed the test” because he was asked to collaborate on a second feature film with Perry, which is in the works, and this one he could talk about. “We’re up for a feature film for Netflix. It’s a big one, a suspense thriller,” Leyva recounted excitedly. “I am already in talks with the studio.”

Leyva’s is after all the ASC’s American Rising Star.

Mexican Luchadores are all the rage lately and Disney has joined the lucha libre craze with their live-action comedy entitled Ultra Violet & Blue Demon. The Disney Channel has ordered the pilot which stars Mexican professional wrestler Blue Demon Jr. and Scarlett Estevez (BUNK’D).

Blue Demon Jr. Photo: (Instagram)

The series revolves around a Mexican-American girl with a special legacy family. Ultra Violet & Blue Demons has a predominantly Latino cast, with creators, executive producers, and writers who will lend authenticity to the story. The title of the Disney series includes the name of one of the most famous wrestlers in Mexico, the late Blue Demon which should delight luchador fans around the world. Blue Demon Jr., his adopted son carries on his legacy while creating his own.

In 2008 Blue Demon Jr. became the first Mexican professional wrestler, as well as first masked luchador, to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship when he defeated the then champion, Adam Pearce. In 2014 he appeared in Robert Rodriguez El Rey network’s television series Lucha Underground and one of the wrestlers and appeared in a cartoon version in an episode of ¡Mucha Lucha! On Kids WB.

Scarlett Estevez (Photo: Self)

Estevez, whose acting career started at the age of three and has a long list of credit, plays a 13 year old student dealing with the angst that is middle school. When she is selected to wear the magical luchador mask that allows her to become Ultra, she begins training with her famous Mexican wrestler uncle, Blue Demon Jr. who is also a superhero in disguise. Together they teach each other, Ultra trains with her uncle to attain her superhero status and Uncle Blue discovers he can also learn a thing or two from his modern Gen-Z niece.

“Blue Demon Jr. is a Mexican cultural icon and we are looking forward to introducing him—and the luchador mythology—to our viewers,” said Rafael Garcia, vice president, Development, Disney Branded Television. “With Violet and her family, we also have the opportunity to present an authentic Mexican American family in a series that combines humor and adventure in a unique Latinx shake-up of the superhero genre.”

The cast includes: Venezuelan actress Marianna Burelli plays Violet’s mother; Juan Alfonso as Violet’s father; Brandon Rossel is Violet’s brother; Zelia Ankrum is Violet’s best friend; and Bryan Blanco as Violet’s goody-two-shoes classmate.Blue Demon Jr. is set to co-executive produce the series alongside fellow co-executive producers Moxie 88’s Dan Carrillo Levy and Eugenio Villamar who brought the IP to Disney. Jorge Garcia Castro will also serve as a co-executive producer. The pilot episode was written and executive produced by Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit (Pokémon Detective Pikachu, One Day at a Time) and directed by Alejandro Damiani (“M.A.M.O.N.”).

The second half of the 1970s saw Lynda Carter conquer America and the world in the title role of the TV live-action superheroine Wonder Woman series. Born Linda Jean Cordova Carter, the actress inspired young girls and women as one of few heroes with super powers on television and conquered the hearts of all with her signature look: dark brown, wavy hair, piercing blue eyes and voluptuous figure.

Now the actress who made Wonder Woman a household name makes a cameo as the Amazon named Asteria in the new film Wonder Woman 1984, starring Gal Gadot and now playing in theaters and streaming online.

After Wonder Woman the TV series ended in 1979, Carter went on to star in many movies for television, including a biopic about Rita Hayworth, and appear in various roles in TV series like Smallville and Supergirl. In the latter, Carter stills plays the recurring occasional role of President Olivia Marsdin. She has also lent her voice to video games.

The Phoenix, Arizona native, who is of Mexican and European descent, also has a music career, recording several jazz and blues albums. After all, music was her first passion, which led her to perform once in Las Vegas when she was still under 21 years of age. Her most recent album Red Rock N’ Blues came out in 2018. That same year she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame honoring her television career.

In addition to sporadically playing the US president in Supergirl, Carter could soon be seen in the film The Cleaner, starring opposite Luke Wilson (The Royal Tenenbaums, Stargirl) and Shelley Long (Cheers, Modern Family). The drama about a middle-age house cleaner who gets caught up in a violent crime is in post-production.

The post Lynda Carter, 70’s Live Action Wonder Woman first appeared on .

By Roberto Leal
Movie Review

“In the barrio, bad things happen when the sky turns black”

That’s the opening and closing line to Ben Hernandez-Bray’s engaging superhero movie, El Chicano. That line proves to be very prophetic in the film. However, many good cinematic things happen in El Chicano, when the lights were turned off and the theater went black.

Way back in October 2016, I wrote a review for Latin Heat Magazine of the remake of The Magnificent Seven titled: Wanted: Latino Movie Heroes. In that piece, I loudly lamented the looming lack of Latino heroes in the film. Why the pathetic, pissant paucity of positive Hispanic protagonists in a film? I didn’t express it with the same alliterative flare, but you get my point. Oh, sure, Latinos portray sidekicks (Gonzales-Gonzales, Leo Carillo), often villains (El Chapo) and occasionally, an anti-hero (Danny Trejo, Machete). But never, never a straight-up, ass-kicking, name-taking, vigilante for justice superhero…until now. And, writer, director, Ben Hernandez-Bray is the right guy to bring it to life to the big screen.

Back in March, in an exclusive, in-depth interview by Elia Esparza for Latin Heat, Hernandez-Bray opened his heart, mind, soul and freely shared the personal tragedies, values, dreams and artistic vision that culminated in the genesis and eventual realization of El Chicano. When asked who his childhood superhero idols were, Hernandez-Bray replied:

“I’d have to say, Batman, Aquaman and Superman! As a result, I eventually became a big fan of ComicCon!”

That Batman influence is significant in Hernandez-Bray’s personal life and the El Chicano character. Bruce Wayne became Batman after his parents were murdered by small-time crime boss, Joe Chill. Hernandez-Bray’s brother was a victim of gang violence. His brother’s death greatly affected Hernandez-Bray’s attitude toward the importance of family. In the interview, he revealed:

“El Chicano is a superhero; he derives strength from within. His life is very symbolic of my own life. About twelve years ago I lost my younger brother to gang violence. It was a loss that hit my mother, siblings and me very hard and we struggled to get beyond our grief.”

Similarly, Diego/El Chicano, nicely played by Raul Castillo, assumes the mantle of El Chicano after the violent death of his brother. But, unlike most superheroes who derive their powers from the bite of a radioactive spider, a chemical, genetic or galactic mishap El Chicano derives his powers from within, as inspired by Hernandez-Bray’s personal story.

Raul Castillo and George Lopez

Hernandez-Bray’s vast experience as a stunt man and capable directing of episodic TV action, superhero shows like Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow, are plainly evident in the smart, timely staging and choreographing of the pivotal fight scenes. The fight sequences are not gratuitous and overdone set pieces, as they often are in this genre, but fold in logically with the ebb and flow of the story. Cinematographer, Juan Miguel Azpiroz’s visual style brings the East L.A. landscape to life and makes it a vital character to be reckoned with. Mitch Lee’s pulse-pounding, thumping, hip-hop soundtrack is the perfect, urban heartbeat of El Chicano.

Unlike, Danny Trejo in Machete, Raul, as Diego/El Chicano, is not a menacing or imposing physical presence. He’s the nice-looking, Mexican-American kid next door who becomes the Barrio Batman. Diego does not wear a fancy cowl and cape, like the Dark Knight. He wears a hoody and a mask. He does not drive a fancy Batmobile but opts to roar around the East L.A. streets in a hopped-up motorcycle. However, his fighting skills are the equal of any superhero currently kicking butt in the movies.

A quick shout out to a fine supporting cast. George Lopez in a surprisingly good dramatic role as Captain Gomez. Aimee Garcia is impressive as Vanessa and Marco Rodriguez as Jesus shines as the barrio shaman and Keeper of the Flame of Aztec myth and legend. The rest of the cast deliver solid, authentic, effective performances, a testament to Hernandez-Bray’s well-written script and deft directing.

Raul Castillo, Aimee Garcia and George Lopez

In Esparza’s interview, Hernandez-Bray was asked what he wanted the audience of El Chicano to come away with after experiencing the film. Hernandez-Bray didn’t have to think about it very long:

“Telling this story became important to me. I wanted people to know no matter what your socio-economic background you come from, tragedy hits everyone, but you don’t have to stay trapped in your grief or your surroundings. You can make a better life for yourself. I hope others to get inspired by it, especially if you’re from the barrio.”

The open ending of El Chicano clearly suggests a sequel is in the future. Hernandez-Bray confirms that an El Chicano sequel is indeed in the works. We don’t know how soon the next chapter of El Chicano will come to a local cineplex near you. Just keep a sharp eye on the barrio night sky, when it turns black, El Chicano will be heard off in the distance on his motorcycle roaring back into the hood to mete out justice and open up a large can of whup ass on the bad guys who dare cross his path or mess with his family.

The post El Chicano: Horale!
A consummate actress, Sixtos tackles each role with serious respect. With her chameleon-like ability to fully inhabit the characters, she always impresses. In other words, Andrea gives it her all to bringing her characters to life on screen.

Arrow Creator and Executive Producer Greg Berlanti’s popular action adventure/crime TV series, Arrow, has been on air since since 2012 and has its own “Arrowverse”. The characters are based on the DC Comics character of Oliver Green/Green Arrow.

Loyal Arrow fans love the series which follows the escapades of Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), a former billionaire businessman and politician, and the aftermath of outing himself as the vigilante Oliver Green. The tale is set in the “Arrowverse, sharing continuity with other television series of the universe.”

Season seven features “Zoe’s” big reveal in episodes 4 and 6. It is 2040, and a grown up “Zoe” (Sixtos), daughter of Rene Ramirez (Rick Gonzalez)“Wild Dog”, is being groomed to become the future Black Canary, a superhero, whose skills have yet to be revealed. Rumors are that she possesses superior martial arts skills, and like her predecessor, is a badass fighter and part of the futuristic Green Arrow’s resistant effort.

We caught up with Andrea to talk about her new exciting role and how she tackles her acting career.

Latin Heat: Who is “Zoe Ramirez”? Give us some backstory on your character.

Andrea Sixtos: Zoe is the daughter of Rene Ramirez aka “Wild Dog” and Laura Ramirez who unfortunately passed away when Zoe was pretty young.

When Zoe was a kid, seeing her dad Rene fight crime, save lives and keep the city safe was truly inspiring to her. She was proud of the work he did and looked up to him. Flash forward 20 years and Rene is now mayor of The Glades, and Star City is no longer his focus and he’s turned somewhat against vigilantism. Meanwhile, Zoe is hiding from him the fact that she’s now a Canary working to help save Star City which inevitably causes distance between them but Zoe won’t give up hope that he’ll one day remember his way.

LH: How does your Zoe’s relationship with her dad remind you of your own?

AS: Well that’s easy, my dad has always been my hero. I’ve always looked up to him and what he stands for. He’s brave. He loves his family and has always fought to keep us safe. Love my papa… and, momma of course [chuckles].

LH: I understand your character’s storyline takes place in the future, can you tell me how her future connects with the show’s current storyline?

AS: My futuristic storyline is set in 2040, which I think is the friggin’ coolest! In the present storyline young Zoe is seen learning how to fight and is always encouraging her dad to be the hero she believes he is. She frequently watches him run off on a new mission with big admiring eyes. She’s also given a canary pin as a gift from Dinah Drake [current day Black Canary], which is a big hint that Zoe would be involved in the vigilante world as an adult.

LH: How physical is your role?

AS: As of right now, my role hasn’t been too physical but I expect the physicality to be amped up in future episodes. I’ve been athletic my entire life, playing sports, kickboxing, always staying fit, so I’ll be ready when the time comes to kick some ass! [Laughs]

LH: What is it about Arrow that appealed to you?

AS: Everything about it! I was excited for the opportunity to audition for a superhero show. I mean, it’s a dream really. I also love the CW and think they make some great content. I’ve always felt I’d fit well in one of their shows and boom! Here I am.

LH: How many callbacks did you get and how did you learn you had booked the gig?

AS: I had two callbacks for the role and I found out I booked it when my agents and manager, called me saying ‘I hope you got your passport!’ It was a VERY exciting moment for us all.

LH: What is most challenging in working on a popular TV series?

AS: Well, I am working on a hugely popular show and I’m hoping and praying the OG Arrow fans enjoy watching my character join the team. There’s a lot weighing on how they react to our storyline and that can be a little stressful, but so far so good!

Photo: Laura Sixtos

LH: Do you have a favorite action hero or heroine, who is it and why?

AS: I think all superheroes deserve lots of recognition because they all fight crime for the greater good of humanity. But if I had to pick just one I’d have to go with Batwoman. Not only is she insanely badass and sexy, but she only uses skilled martial arts and detective work as her abilities, no superhuman powers which I think is so… so… cool.

LH: Let’s talk about your acting career: When did you start in the business and what has been the most frustrating and most rewarding thus far?

AS: I started acting at the age of 13 and because I basically grew up in the business, it’s always been my way of life. Studying, going to the auditions, booking some, losing most, but I always continued moving forward, never giving up.

Most frustrating thing about it—All the countless hours lost sitting in rush hour traffic on the 101 and 405 freeways going to and from auditions. [Laughs] And, of course not booking those roles that I truly wanted deep down in my core is hard. But something that I’ve learned over the years is that everything happens for a reason. I didn’t book those roles because they weren’t mine to have—they were someone else’s. I’d say to learning that lesson has been very rewarding. I’ve gained tougher skin through the let downs and I know that my job as an artist is to put my best foot forward, soak in the lessons and CONTINUE MOVING FORWARD. What’s mine to have is already in motion and patience is one hell of a virtue.

LH: Do you have a favorite role from past credits? Which one was the most difficult to say goodbye to?

AS: Playing Jocelyn on East Los High was definitely a favorite role of mine that was pretty hard to part with. It was an unforgettable experience that I’m really grateful I had. I learned a lot. I’d say the hardest thing to walk away from was the family we’d created on set. Luckily, I’m still very close friends with a few of them today.

LH: Any other projects brewing in the near future?

AS: I’ve been lucky enough to be busy working on Arrow these past few months so my schedule has been pretty tight but I’m looking forward to jumping into something new as soon as the chance arises!
