Warner Bros. DC Comic Book action/adventure movie Blue Beetle has all the prerequisite elements for a great superhero flick to take its place alongside the long litany of similar movie fare that dominates the theaters today.

Blue Beetle revolves around a very likable, attractive young hero, an ultra-evil villain who threatens to take over the world, an apocalyptic storyline replete with pyrotechnic fireworks, explosions, gun fights, and hand-to-hand combat. There’s a romantic interest, a sequel teaser coda, and a wonderful, pulsating, rhythmic Latino music soundtrack. But the not-so-secret key ingredient that makes Blue Beetle a tasty, palatable, delicious, cinematic feast is the cast.

A Super Latino Cast of Characters

Xolo Maridueña plays Jaime Reyes, a recent college graduate, the first in his Mexican-American family. Through a series of improbable events that require much suspension of disbelief, a beetle scarab possessing enormous powers becomes a parasite on his back, endowing him with powers he has no desire to have. Maridueña, who is best known for his continuing role as Miguel Diaz on Cobra Kai, is funny and disarming as the accidental, reluctant hero with superpowers he has no control over.

It is Maridueña’s affable, humorous self-effacing performance that sets the tone for Blue Beetle.

George Lopez, whose career has evolved from stand-up comic, late-night talk show host to TV sitcom star to becoming an accomplished character actor in such films as, The Spy Next Door and El Chicano, puts all that experience to good use as Jaime’s zany, eccentric Uncle Rudy who doesn’t miss a chance to chew up the scenery in his many hilarious scenes.

The talented, versatile Mexican actress Adriana Barraza who has distinguished herself in such diverse films as Babel and Thor, is Jaime’s grandmother, Nana Reyes. At first glance, Nana appears to be your typical, lovable Mexican abuela. But this granny harbors a secret past, or at least she hints at one. Nana suggests she once was a gun-toting revolutionary in some Latin American conflict.

In the exciting climatic battle, Nana shows her old revolutionary stuff by expertly firing a machine gun, much like Barraza did in Gigi Saul Guererro’s film Bingo Hell, all the while laughing out loud with obvious glee.

Jamie’s mother, Rocio Reyes, is played by legendary (and this writer’s favorite) Mexican actress Elpidia Carrillo. She has appeared in numerous big-time films like Salvador, The Border, and Predator and held her own alongside costars like James Woods, Jack Nicholson, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Carrillo has appeared in several Mexican independent films as well as starring in International and American films and TV. She has won a plethora of awards for her work on the big and small screen. She also hosts an annual film festival in her home state of Michoacan, Mexico.

Despite her impressive cinema and TV pedigree, Carillo regrettably only has a small part in Blue Beetle. But it is a pivotal part, and true to her commitment as an artist, she does a lot with what she is given.

The Family is the Real Power

Director Angel Manuel Soto (The Farm, La Carta, 22 Weeks) and screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, (Contrapelo, Miss Bala, El Muerto) have combined their considerable talents to create a story that illuminates and brings into sharp focus the warmth, love, and humor of the Mexican American experience found in the Blue Beetle DC Comic Book stories.

Manuel Angel Soto, Blue Beetle Director (Photo: WB)

There is a strong subtext to Blue Beetle that posits the idea that Jaime Reyes’ superpowers owe as much to his strong familial connections as it does to an arbitrary beetle scarab talisman. And who better to represent the strength of the family on the big screen to a wide audience than a Mexican-American one?

There are some funny Latino cultural references used in writer Dunnet-Alcoceaideser’s script, and director Soto leavens the furious action set pieces with glib, self-effacing ad-lib asides by Jaime as he valiantly tries to rein in his out-of-control, oversized beetle bug superpowers.

A Disappointment at the Box Office

Blue Beetle is a fun roller coaster ride replete with action, laughs, and quirky, likeable Mexican-American characters struggling, battling and loving within a rich Latino cultural motif that received generally positive critical reviews and enthusiastic audience feedback.

So, why didn’t Blue Beetle do better at the box office? It earned $25 million during its first theatrical week of release. As of this writing, its global box office receipts are under $100 million.

Several reasons contributed to its weak performance at the box office.

Dump Month Factor. Warner Bros. released Blue Beetle to theaters in mid-August 2023. August, by many movie industry insiders, is considered a “dump month” for movies the studio doesn’t have much confidence in, as opposed to those released during the holidays.

Lack of Marketing. Due to the WGA/SAG strike, Blue Beetle cast members did not appear on late night TV shows to chat up the film. TV commercials promoting the film were rare compared to the avalanche of ads for Barbie.

Blame it on Hillary. No, not that Hillary, the other Hillary, Tropical Storm Hillary. Hillary descended on Southern California just in time for the theatrical release of Blue Beetle. It was reported that the heavy rains put a damper on theater attendance.

The DC Cinema Universe Losing Streak. Whereas the Marvel Universe churns one highly successful adventure superhero film after another, the DC Cinema Universe has turned out one box office turkey after another. The last most recent one, in a string of many box office failures was Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

Hope “Streams” Eternal

In 1946, Hollywood iconic director, Frank Capra, saw his film, It’s A Wonderful Life, starring Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, and Lionel Barrymore, open to a universal chorus of boo bird movie critics who ravaged his film for its style and content. It suffered miserably at the box office as well.

George Lopez and Xolo Maridueña in Blue Beetle. ([Photo: WB)

But with the advent of television, It’s A Wonderful Life over time became an annual Christmas viewing tradition and achieved a cult status which it still enjoys today.

When Blue Beetle is picked up by some streaming platform, a similar fate could befall this movie, too. On a streaming platform, it could gain the traction it didn’t get in the theaters and become a minor cult classic. With some newfound success, Blue Beetle could result in a sequel, maybe a franchise, and who knows, eventually a Broadway musical based on the DC Comic Mexican-American superhero.

A strong streaming performance could also convince the studio executives at Sony Pictures to rethink their decision to shelve Bad Bunny’s El Muerto and bring it back to life (bad pun intended).

So, let’s not throw out the big bug with the bath water just yet. Blue Beetle has a lot going for it; a great cast, storyline, and cultural diversity, which is so badly lacking in the world of superhero films today.

The post The ‘Blue Beetle’ Showcases a Super Latino Cast first appeared on .

Father of the Bride premieres on June 16 and we are all invited to attend. It is Andy Garcia‘s turn as the father of the bride in this remake of the original 1950 film starring Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor and the 1991 (and sequel in ‘95) re-make starring Steve Martin. This time around the story is told through the prism of the coming together of a big, sprawling Cuban-American clan and a family from Mexico City as they are joined by the marriage of their children.

Few things can beat the experience of working on the set with acclaimed director Clint Eastwood, says actress Natalia Traven. She should know. The Mexican actress met multiple Academy Award-winning filmmaker during the shooting of his latest film Cry Macho.

“He (Eastwood) is so funny, so warm, a great human being,” says Traven.

The tireless Eastwood made Cry Macho at the age of 91 during the pandemic, the 39th movie directed by the San Francisco-born filmmaker. The film tells the story of Mike Milo, a retired horse breeder and former rodeo star who drowns his sorrows in alcohol after losing his wife and son. Milo accepts a job to bring his former boss’s son back home from Mexico and away from the young man’s alcoholic mother.

However, the two men’s journey turns out to be more challenging than expected, being forced to take the back roads on their way to Texas. Mike, who was involved in the illegal business of cockfighting, must now decide if he takes a new path to redemption.

The movie is playing in movie theaters and streaming on HBO Max.

In Cry Macho, Traven plays the role of Marta, a widow who raises her extended family in a small Mexican town near the Texas border. The grandmother tries to help her grandson Mike, and herself, recover from a personal tragedy.

In the middle of the pandemic, Traven made an audition tape for the role of Marta. “They liked it and sent it to Clint Eastwood,” she says. The director liked the recorded performance and requested that Traven meet him in Albuquerque, New Mexico, according to the actress. The film was shot in nearby Belen and Polvadera, south of the Land of Enchantment’s most populous city. The actress adds she got to know Eastwood more personally. “He is one of the best directors in the history of cinema and also a great human being,” says Traven.

Eastwood’s biggest films include Oscar winners Million Dollar Baby and Unforgiven and Academy Award-nominees American Sniper, Letters from Iwo Jima and Mystic River.

Clint Eastwood and Natalia Traven in Cry Macho (Credit: Warner Bros.)

Cry Macho’s central theme of self-redemption appealed to the actress. “It is a story about life, when we get to a certain age we are concerned about getting lost and getting found,” Traven says. “In life sometimes we get lost during a crisis and then we must reinvent ourselves. The older you get the better the insight you have about life. Sometimes you must adjust to find true joy and contentment.”

While the film’s story takes place in and on both sides of the U.S-Mexico border, the actress makes clear it isn’t about the current border crisis. She notes the film is set in the late 1970s. “The story was more about being strong, but we can be vulnerable and warm as well,” she says. “I see the story in terms of soul evolution. I drew from this philosophy to portray this strong woman. We tried to convey this empathy and sympathy for this human condition.” She adds that Cry Macho is a life story and not necessarily a commentary on our times. “(It’s) rather a commentary on the human condition which is universal,” states Traven.

Cry Macho’s Marta may be the biggest film role of the past few years for the Mexican actress, who has a prolific career in theatre.

Traven has performed in more than 35 plays, including The Orphan Muses and A Pornographic Relationship. She was responsible for the assembly and direction in Mexico of the Spanish-language version of the musical Spring Awakening, the winner of eight Tony Awards on Broadway. Her film credits include Bedtime Fairy Tales for Crocodiles, Collateral Damage and Trade. She has also appeared in the AMC series Soulmates and the Mexican series La Familia P. Luche and Mujer: Casos de la Vida Real.

Traven got started in acting in her teens while seriously considering a career as a lawyer.

“I got into acting when I was in high school although I wanted to get into law,” she says. A school theatre workshop led to winning some awards in a school competition. “This is when I fell in love with acting,” states Traven. “I did go to law school first but then dropped law and started taking acting classes.” After studying acting for a few years, the actress went to the Lee Strasberg Institute in Los Angeles. “I am a method actor and believe every actor needs to have technique, because in Mexico that is not emphasized.”

She also decided to pursue another career.

“I like to keep well rounded,” says Traven. After studying acting, she went back to college to get a bachelor’s degree in psychology and later earned a master’s in natural linguistic programming and another in psychotherapy. “I have a private practice,” she states with pride, adding she doesn’t mix her different careers.

By Cesar Arredondo

Comedian and actor Gabriel Iglesias dared the so-called “cancel culture” to go after him when he announced he’d be voicing Speedy Gonzales in the anticipated live-action/animated sports comedy film Space Jam: A New Legacy. Funny thing: Nothing happened.

The acclaimed comic is now the new voice of the iconic nimble Looney Tunes character in the Space Jam sequel starring the basketball legend LeBron James. The film opens in theaters nationwide this weekend.

(Photo: Warner Bros.)

“U [sic] can’t catch me cancel culture,” tweeted Iglesias back in March. “I’m the fastest mouse in all of Mexico.” The post was published just days after a New York Times piece by columnist Charles M. Blow on stereotypical cartoons like Pepé Le Pew, saying the skunk “normalized rape culture”. Of Speedy Gonzales, Blow said the mouse’s “friends helped popularize the corrosive stereotype of the drunk and lethargic Mexicans.” Besides, there’s always been talk among Latinos and others about stereotypes present in the cartoons featuring Speedy and company.

Both Pepé Le Pew and Speedy Gonzales were initially part of Space Jam: A New Legacy, but only the ingenious, resourceful, bilingual Mexican mouse made the final cut. Unlike the skunk who got no love for his history of aggressively pursuing romance, Speedy Gonzalez got mucho amor from many Latinos who have come to his defense for his speed, resourcefulness and wit against gringo enemies.

The ratoncito is part of more than a dozen characters from the Looney Tunes universe featured in Space Jam: A New Legacy. They are Bugs Bunny, Sylvester, Yosemite Sam, Yogi Bear, Fred Flintstone, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Foghorn Leghorn, Marvin the Martian, Lola Bunny, Tweety, Tasmanian Devil, Granny and Road Runner, voiced by talents like Jeff Bergman, Eric Bauza, Zendaya, Bob Bergen, Jim Cummings and Latina VO talent Candi Milo.

(Photo: Warner Bros.)

In the new animated film from Warner Bros., a rogue artificial intelligence kidnaps the son of famed basketball player LeBron James, who then has to work with Bugs Bunny and his Looney Tunes gang to win a basketball game. Co-starring along with the Lakers small forward are Academy Award winner Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda, Crash), Cedric Joe (Modern Family), Khris Davis (Detroit) and Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery). The film is directed by Malcolm D. Lee (Girls Trip).

This is not the first time that Iglesias lends his voice to animated films. A few years after committing to stand-up comedy in 1997, Fluffy started accumulating credits in animated projects for over two decades, from TV series like Family Guy and The Emperor’s New School to films like Planes, The Nut Job and El Americano: The Movie, Coco and Ferdinand.

The comedian has also made films of some of his concerts, The Fluffy Movie, and Gabriel Iglesias: Hot and Fluffy. Additionally, his ever-growing popularity has led them to appear in others like features two Magic Mike installments and popular shows like Modern Family and Cristela.

He’s made the Forbes annual list of “The World’s Highest-Paid Comedians” several times. In 2018 The Hollywood Reporter included him among “The 40(ish) Most Powerful People in Comedy,” which also featured Jerry Seinfeld, Kevin Hart, Dave Chappelle, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Will Ferrell and Tina Fey.

Today, Iglesias’ arguably the most popular and commercially successful Latino comedian, developing a fandom with a stand-up that mixes storytelling, parodies, characters and sound effects that bring his personal experiences to life. His YouTube channel has nearly five million subscribers.

For two seasons he had his own self-titled Netflix original comedy series, Mr. Iglesias, playing a good-natured public high school teacher who works at his alma mater teaching gifted but misfit kids from the inner city. Although the series was canceled Netflix is working with Iglesias on other projects

With his Space Jam 2 performance, Fluffy is only the second Latino actor to voice Speedy Gonzales.

In the Heights star Jimmy Smits may be on cloud nine these days. The seasoned actor co-stars in the highly anticipated musical film based on a Broadway hit and recently got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Jimmy Smits (Photo: Latin Heat Media)

In In the Heights, Smits plays Kevin Rosario, the overprotective father of Nina, a struggling Stanford University student. The son of farmworkers, Kevin tries to avoid the same mistake his father did and owns a taxi cab company.

Directed by Jon M. Chu, of Crazy Rich Asians, the film is based on Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway musical hit, with music and lyrics by Miranda and a book by Quiara Alegría Hudes. The story takes place in New York’s largely Dominican neighborhood of Washington Heights.

Not a professional dancer nor singer, Brooklyn-born Smits had extra help in his performance for the film. In an interview on ABC’s Live with Kelly and Ryan, with Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest, Smits self-deprecatingly revealed he had “four vocal coaches for seven lines” in a musical number and laughed about it.

The unveiling of Smits’ Star on the Walk of Fame came just days before the world premiere In the Heights, playing theatres nationwide starting June 11.

With a show business career spanning over three decades, the Latino thespian is an accomplished film, TV and theatre performer.

Smits’ star is near the one of Gregory Peck, an Oscar-winning legend with whom the Latino actor co-starred in the film 1989 Old Gringo and whom he considers a “kind of a mentor” that helped him stay on the right path in his career. “That means a whole lot (to me),” he said in the same TV interview with Kelly and Ryan.

“The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to be honoring one of the hardest working actors in show business,” said Ana Martinez, producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “The fact that we placed his star near the star of his favorite actor and co-star Gregory Peck makes this ceremony even sweeter. We are proud to add Jimmy Smits to our Walk of Fame family.” The star is located at 6100 Hollywood Blvd. near the Pantages Theater.

The Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy-winning actor has appeared in over 20 feature films like Old Gringo and Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and about 30 television projects such as L.A. Law and NYPD Blue. He is also a consummate stage performer whose credits include the Broadway production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna in the Tropics as well some Shakespearian works.

In a long, prolific career, Smits has earned more than 40 award nominations and critical acclaim and worked with renowned directors and Hollywood stars. His early filmography includes Peter Hyams’ Running Scared with Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal, John Schlesinger’s The Believers, Blake Edwards’ comedy Switch; and the critically acclaimed My Family/Mi Familia, directed by Gregory Nava, for which he received an IFP Spirit Award nomination.

Smits’ later works include Carlos Ávila’s Price of Glory, George Lucas’ Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Rogue One and Robin Swicord’s The Jane Austen Book Club. Other credits include El Traspatio (Backyard) by director Carlos Carrera and Who We Are Now, written and directed by Matthew Newton.

Smits, however, may be best known for his television work. He received six consecutive Emmy nominations, winning in 1990, for his role as Victor Sifuentes on the multi-award-winning drama L.A. Law. He received a Golden Globe Award and five consecutive Emmy nominations for his role as Bobby Simone on the critically acclaimed, Emmy-winning drama, NYPD Blue, and earned an Emmy nomination for his guest star arc in season three of Showtime’s hit series Dexter.

Additionally, he received an ALMA Award and an Imagen Award for Best Actor in The West Wing, has four Golden Globe nominations and eleven SAG Award nominations, receiving the honor in 1995 for NYPD Blue. His highly-touted departure from New York police drama also won the Humanitas Award.

Smits last starred in the NBC-TV series Bluff City Law as a civil rights lawyer in Memphis and appeared in a season-long guest arc opposite Viola Davis on How To Get Away With Murder. Before that he co-starred in 24: Legacy, opposite Corey Hawkins and Miranda Otto, as a powerful and ambitious U.S. Senator. He also co-starred in Baz Luhrmann’s music-driven drama for Netflix The Get Down, a mythic saga of how New York at the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to hip-hop, punk and disco. He also portrayed Neron “Nero” Padilla in the final three seasons of the lauded FX show Sons of Anarchy and takes a comedic turn in NBC’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Jimmy Smits, center, in NBC’s Bluff City Law, along with Caitlin McGee and Micahel Luwoye (Credit: NBC)

In 2009, he finished a guest-starring stint in season three of Showtime’s hit series Dexter, for which he was recognized with his 12th Emmy nomination. In 2008, Smits’ El Sendero Productions company co-executive produced the CBS series Cane, which he also starred in. The show was critically acclaimed for its cutting edge and dramatic reflection of the family dynamic within a modern-day Cuban-American family. In 2006 Smits completed his role in the long-running and critically-acclaimed NBC series The West Wing. As President Matthew Santos, Smits brought to the show his infusion of energy and added even more depth to the well-written and politically relevant plotline.

Smits has involved himself in various charitable organizations over the years, such as Stand Up 2 Cancer, the Saban Community Clinic, Homeboys, St. Jude’s Hospital for Children among others. He has consistently been a strong advocate for education and co-founded the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts (NHFA) in 1997 along with actors Esai Morales and Sonia Braga and Washington attorney Felix Sanchez, to promote Hispanic talent in the performing arts. The organization offers graduate scholarships and cash grants at prominent colleges and universities to expand career opportunities and increase access for Hispanic artists and professionals while fostering the emergence of new Hispanic talent.

Ana Perez

Gal Gadot (Warner Bros.)

Many blockbuster movies took a backseat due to COVID-19 last year, much to the dismay of filmgoing fans. But that didn’t stop Warner Media from releasing Wonder Woman 1984 in theaters and HBO Max this past Christmas Day.

Though the film was an overall streaming success on its Christmas Day release, it was released on HBO Max. The 2017 predecessor gave fans high hopes for the sequel, but the mediocre plot left fans craving a more substantial storyline. Still, for many of its fans, the film was enough to satisfy them.

Gal Gadot continues to carry DC Comics since Christian Bale’s departure as the Dark Knight in the Batman franchise after seven years. But it is Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian) and Kristen Wiig (Ghostbusters, Saturday Night Live) that give the Wonder Woman sequel legs to stand on, and truly the colors of the 80s are always a nice touch.

The film began beautifully. We were back in Themyscira with a young Diana competing in a rigorous challenge against full-grown women. Watching the super-talented 13-year-old Lilly Aspell play the young princess is visually and emotionally astounding. The scene highlights where Diana’s moral compass stems from, and how the lessons she learned as a child have resonated throughout her life.

Maxwell Lord (Pascal) and The Cheetah (Wiig) created an interesting villain for Wonder Woman despite a subpar plot. The film centers around a mysterious stone that grants wishes, but as always, everything comes at a cost.

Wiig’s character, Dr. Barbara Minerva (The Cheetah) comes in contact with the stone while working at the Smithsonian alongside Diana. Dr. Minerva, a shy and quirky researcher is tasked with identifying the artifact. She and Diana determine that while the stone is a cheap gem, the inscription notes that the stone will grant any wish that a person holding it desires.

Kristen Wiig as The Cheetah and Pedro Pascal as Maxwell Lord in Wonder Woman 1984 (Photo: Warner Bros.)

Maxwell Lord is a fraudulent con man that is running a failing ponzi scheme.Though Lord’s greed and charade seem to be the central focus of the character, Pascal is able to show the desperation in Lord as he tries to create his empire of power with the stone.

Diana, unknowingly, uses her wishes to be with Steve Trevor, her beloved pilot who sacrificed himself decades ago, which is how Chris Pine graces our screens. Barbara, longing to be strong, sexy and captivating, wishes to be more like Diana which includes her super strength.

Lord tricks Barbara and takes the stone from her. It’s briefly (and lamely explained) that he’s been searching for the stone for a long time to achieve his goal of domination. It’s these wishes that create a world of problems for Diana and yet that’s seemingly where the movie takes a turn.

The mass destruction that comes from granting wishes becomes too chaotic and too farfetched to follow. Still, the most disappointing aspect of the movie is that the action lasts for all of what feels like one minute.

Cheetah is such an exceptional villain, but we only see her in action in one scene. That alone should be considered a crime. The film overall left loose ends, but hopefully that means we’ll get to see more from these villains and Wonder Woman soon.

You can stream Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max until Jan. 24.

The post Review: “Wonder Woman” Fails to Impress first appeared on .
