Marvel Studios exec Victoria Alonso will receive the Visionary Award at the 2021 Outfest Legacy Awards this weekend.
“In honoring Victoria Alonso, the Visionary Award will recognize her contributions to LGBTQ+ representation and media visibility,” announced the nonprofit Outfest in a press statement. The Los Angeles-based organization advocates for the global LGBTQIA+ community, careers in the entertainment industry, and the exhibition and preservation of LGBTQIA+ stories and voices.
Alonso is the current president of physical and post-production, visual effects and animation production for Marvel Studios. The Argentinian-born filmmaker and movie exec is among Hollywood’s top Latino, women and LGBTQIA+ decision-makers.
With more than a decade with the famed movie studio, Alonso has worked as a producer or executive producer in pretty much every other Marvel superhero film, more than 20, including the successful franchises of Iron Man, Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy and Spider-Man, Captain America, Ant-Man, Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel and Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings, among others. Her credits also include the TV series WandaVision and Loki.
Avengers: Endgame won Alonso a Hollywood Film Award in 2019. She is also the recipient of the Harold Lloyd Award for her achievements in visual effects. Last year, she also received the Filmmaker’s Award from the Motion Picture Sound Editors during the 67th annual edition of the Golden Reel Awards.
Another two Latinos are also being honored by Outfest. Actor Robin de Jesús (tick, tick…BOOM!) is receiving the Terrence McNally Award acknowledging “his out and proud career across stage and film” and immediate past Outfest Board Co-President Marissa Román-Griffith will get the Jonathan Howard Legacy Award honoring their outstanding leadership during a global pandemic–which she shares with Alan Koenigsberg, Outfest current board co-president.
Other Outfest honorees include Neon, receiving the Guardian Award which recognizes a company’s commitment and legacy to the LGBTQIA+community; Jonathan Howard, receiving the Outfest Legacy Award for his contribution to Outfest as a board member; and actress/filmmaker Rain Valdez (Razor Tongue) receiving the Trailblazer Award that “celebrates her fierce creativity as a writer, director and actor in creating roles and Emmy-nominated shows ensuring that trans people lives are seen.”
Past recipients at the Outfest Legacy Awards include Laverne Cox, Tom Hanks, Judith Light, Rita Moreno, Lee Daniels, Joey Soloway, Hillary Swank, Sean Hayes, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Bruce Cohen, Lisa Cholodenko, Craig Zadan, Neil Merdon, and Tanya Saracho.
