The buzz about town is that the husband and wife duo, Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa’s Milojo Productions will be adapting Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s bestselling horror-thriller, Mexican Gothic into a drama series for Hulu.

According to Deadline, Milojo Productions acquired the rights to develop the fiction fantasy book for a television series. Mexican Gothic, published by Del Rey in June 2020, the story follows a young socialite, Noemí Taboada, who travels to the Mexican countryside and the mountains of Hidalgo in hopes of rescuing her cousin, who recently married into a “reclusive mining family.” Her cousin had sent her a frantic letter, and Noemi is not just saving her but also “seeks to unveil the family’s violent and menacing secrets.” However, her confidence is shaken after being threatened, and she may not be able to escape her strange new home.

It didn’t take Ripa long before she was on Instagram recommending the book to her followers. She called it “Sublime horror for your summer reading. So good, I bought the hard copy and the download to read in the dark.”

Deadline reports that MorenoGarcia will executive produce with Milojo’s Ripa, Consuelos, and Albert Bianchini. Michael Halpern (TV series Joffrey Elite, Fire Island) is Milojo’s Director of Development.

Ripa said, “We feel like we hit the literary jackpot, and cannot wait to bring Silvia’s gorgeous writing to life, together with Hulu.”

Represented by CAA, Moreno-Garcia had them repped the TV sale of Mexican Gothic on behalf of Eddie Schneider of JABberwocky Literary Agency. CAA also reps Milojo and legal is attorney Jake Levy.

Author Moreno-Garcia was born in Mexico and is now a Vancouver, British Columbia resident. Her other literary credits include Gods of Jade and Shadow, Certain Dark Things, Untamed Shore, and other works.  Her anthology, She Walks In Shadows, won her the World Fantasy Award.
