Diversity is certainly on the minds of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences when they extended invitations to 842 artists and executives to join the organization. Selected were individuals who have distinguished themselves y their contributions. Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy’s membership in 2019.
How many Latinos received invitations? Approximately 70, with a .5% margin of error. Congratulations to those invited and more power to Latinos in entertainment if you accept and join.

When she was asked why she reached out to fellow AMPAS member Enrique Castillo and asked him to co-sponsor actress Yareli Arizmendi, Julie Carmen stated, “We all can pay it forward. Good people have reached out and pulled me into projects and I get great joy bringing fellow artists into the fold. Especially during political times that can leave us feeling hopeless. Alma Martinez did that for me in 2016, out of the blue the phone rang and she said she was nominating me for Academy membership. Every year we each have that opportunity.”

When Julie Carmen reached out to me to co-sponsor Yareli Arizmendi for the Motion Picture Academy I was honored to serve as co-sponsor along with Julie. Yareli has done so much important work and is more than deserving of being a member. Like Julie, it is a feeling of great fulfillment to support fellow artists who deserve recognition. I owe a great debt of gratitude to those that supported my induction into the Academy and it is only fitting that I do the same for others. Also, there is a great need for more diversity in the Academy so that it truly reflects the profile of not only our country but also the world we live in.” — Enrique Castillo
